Yellow Card from Dave

February 27, 2008 by nopstar

So while we’re on the subject of David Pacquette… last night I had the opportunity to meet him. I told him I thought it was good fight, but he didn’t have much to say about it.

Most of the people at the gym know that he’s involved in The Contender Asia, but haven’t seen any of the show.

My impression from the other fighters is they know he wasn’t happy with his performance but haven’t seen his fight.

He was teaching, rather yelling at an earlier class. He was really pushing them hard. There was a point where he was giving them a pep talk …” You need to see what you’re made of! Push yourself, this is the last round and your down on points!” I couldn’t help think that his mind still wasn’t on that last fight.

I saw him give a guy a “yellow card.” “You get a yellow card for not working hard enough!” “You’re on warning if I give you another yellow card this week I’m banning you from the gym for a month!” Oh snap, dude better start working. Dave’s legit, and I look forward to learning from him.

Last night was one of my harder sessions… mostly because I haven’t been working out and eating like a fat bastard. Seriously they serve chips (French fries) with everything over here. Don’t get me wrong, I think French fries should be served with everything but I’m even reaching my limits.

Anyway, if you guys have any questions for him post them in the comments. I’ll try to talk to him in the next few days.

I didn’t particularly like David’s personality. He seemed to be pretty tight butt buddies with Rafik when he was still around, and that doesn’t surprise me. They both seem to have that cockiness/arrogance/smugness that just rubs me the wrong way. The producers ALMOST had me singing another tune when they showed that thing about his mom, but then he did some cocky lame thing with his ring entrance or something and it knocked him right back down.

He put up a damn good fight and showed a lot of heart, though. Maybe this loss will be good for his attitude and focus.

  2. matt on February 28th, 2008 1:06 am

I agree with Slayer, I think David came across badly on this programme. Did you see him cornering people in the previous fights?!!Admittedly its partly the way the shows edited together, but id rather have no corner man than one saying the things he said, ie “no regrets”Thats like saying fight hard we all no your gona lose but have no regrets!!

Your not exactly selling his gym either. a yellow card system?!I think you shuold endevour to get out of London dude.Come north!!

  3. Anonymous on February 28th, 2008 2:49 am

Yeah I too felt he was rather annoying and completely useless as a cornerman to Bruce.

No regrets? I’m sure Bruce knows that too.

  4. Shadyeskimo on February 28th, 2008 3:33 am

Well you can ask Dave if he is returning to Thailand to live and train there? I understood he had been there before.

  5. A5YF K on February 28th, 2008 4:52 am

I have to agree with you guys about David but to be fair he was not that bad a person.
Yes he was over exited when he was cornering but he was only trying to gear up his team mates. I did not like the fact that he did not shake hands with Dzhabar that was wrong even as a joke. Not everyone can take things as a joke!!! Its quite insulting really, i’d be quite pissed too.
But on the whole David was a cool guy got on with his team mates and was captain for a short period.
Shame about the decision really, i would have give it to him with the point deductions though.

Hope all goes well for your training session Nop, stay away from the yellow cards!!!!
Like Matt said come up North!

  6. Stack on February 28th, 2008 5:54 am

A little surprised with that. David seems more respectful than a few of the contenders and one of the better foreigners on the show too. He’s definitely not lacking any confidence but he doesn’t seem especially disrespectful.

To me the handshake joke thing was a non-issue.

  7. Khannie on February 28th, 2008 7:22 am

A non issue to you perhaps, but Dzabhar was annoyed enough about it to cheat in the fight.

  8. Anonymous on February 28th, 2008 7:42 am

i heard that david tgt with bruce and rafik were the more arrogant annoying ones on the shoe. sean slightly too

  9. A5YF K on February 28th, 2008 8:09 am

    Exactly Khannie your 100% right!!!
Dzabhar even said that he was pissed off about it, made it into more of a grudge match to him.
Like i said everyone takes things differently and its not very muay thai(nakmuay) like.

  10. Josh on February 28th, 2008 8:24 am

I didn’t really have a problem with him. Anyhow, I have a friend training in Thailand (Same camp as Sean) who wants to try out for Contender 2….Will David if they let him?

Nopstar, the link for David Pacquette is not working. :)
Ask David when we’ll see him fight again.
He did very well against Petrosian and show big heart against Dzhabar. His low kick kicks ass, I mean legs. :)

I thought David comments in the corner were ok.
At least better than all others from the Wild Boars.
“no regrets” – he was just reviving Bruce’s words.

  13. Gusnark on February 28th, 2008 10:03 am

Nopstar, is it ok to post here link to the torrent sites regarding Contender Asia and stuff?
    I believe that’s illegal.

  14. spydaman on February 28th, 2008 1:29 pm

Um…..I think a lotta of people misunderstood what David meant by “No regret”. My trainer used to tell me and all of his fighters the same exact…Which I believe he himself took from his trainer COBAN!
No regrets mean….”go out and let it all out so that after the fight you will have no regret”. I know a lotta of you people have done thingz in their lives and later which they had done a lil more…or have done it different….that’s “regret”….but if u let it all out….go 100%, give it your all…then u’ll have no regret…win or lose. Don’t be so quick to judge someone.

Also…the only cocky moment I remember seeing was the handshake thing…some of you guys just don’t like David….and that’s it!

I also realized that when David does somethin to another NakMuay, that might rub us the wrong way….we call it cocky and disrespectful….but when JWP does it we call that shit “intimidation”…WTF??

Muay thai is a hard contact sport who demands a lot outta ya….This is not cardio Kickboxing or Tae Bo….so if u’re not willin to put in the work then don’t show up to class……So the Yellow card idea to me is a great idea and I’m thinkin of actually pitchin’ it to my trainer. Thanx DAVID!

“Muay thai is a hard contact sport who demands a lot outta ya….This is not cardio Kickboxing or Tae Bo….so if u’re not willin to put in the work then don’t show up to class……”

Shit. Really? You dont say, man I never realised that b4??!!!

it wasnt just the no regrets thing he said, there were other things he was saying in the corner of other fights that left me feeling that he was almost trying to psyche out the lads in his corner.I mean the programme is every man for himself even if they are in teams.I cant give examples of the top of my head so I guess it gives me an excuse to rewatch the episodes to find some!!

The yellow card thing whatever floats your boat, if you need that kind of incentive to train whatever works for you?! I think its naff. But then I absolutly love training and dont need that kind of incentive! If it was a fight gym and the fighters who worked for that gym didnt train hard enough just fuck them off, give ‘em warning if they carry on being lazy then they’re out of a job? If its a gym for hobyists who pay to train if they want to be lazy its there loss. In my experience whatever kind of gym Iv trained at the lazy bastards usually end up getting ignored in a corner somewhere cause there just happy to pretend to there mates in the pub that they do fighting, no harm no foul?! I think if someone even in my earshot went up to a student and said “yellow card, your being lazy”, I would not be able to continue training for laughing, it starts sounding a bit Rexkwondo again!!

  17. spydaman on February 28th, 2008 2:07 pm

Hey Matt….seems like you thought I was directing my “Tae Bo” comment to u…lol….I wasn’t but since you are the one who made the “yellow card comment” I understand why u might have took it that way. Anyway, in response to your comment…I no longer need any incentive to work hard because I love Muay Thai….but I do remember losing my first fight because even though my technique seemed to be on point…my cardio was shit…because I hadn’t worked hard enough and my tank ran outta gas. I no longer need incentive….but some people do. I’m not talking about the “hobyist”….I’m talking about the “NakMuay”

  18. Stack on February 28th, 2008 2:30 pm

Dzarbar should get a thicker skin then. If that causes him to feel disrespected how’s he going to feel when someone really does disrespect them.

BTW I like David’s approach to keeping gym people on track. More gyms should do it.

  19. nate on February 28th, 2008 2:45 pm

Yeah I got a question about the show, was that the first time David ever used a pallet jack?, I mean god damn.. ?the dude messed up when he started lifting the jack at the end, instead of lifting it in between stacking the boxes!!!!!. If he were working for VONS he would have been fired

  20. SLAYER on February 28th, 2008 3:03 pm

My annoyance with David began well before the cornering thing. I didn’t really see too much of a problem with that. Mine began with the early episodes when Rafik was still around and they were winning challenges. They were scheming and gloating, and just basically being cocky arrogant pricks. There were relishing in how one of the fighters was making a poopoo face when they lost the challenge, and what they could do to screw the other team over.

For most guys, team members, I think they just want to win the challenges so they can pick their fights. For Rafik and David, they seemed like the only two guys who liked playing mental games and rubbing people’s noses in it when they lost.

I know this is a sport that requires a great deal of self-confidence, and I know that a lot can be misinterpreted due to cultural differences. But I’d have to a really bad judge of character if I was off in saying that the dude is a little more arrogant than the average guy. You know?

  21. Shadyeskimo on February 28th, 2008 3:30 pm

Slayer i know where your coming from, when he trampled that Red scarf cloth thingy I felt he was a little too happy.

  22. spydaman on February 28th, 2008 3:38 pm

I’m starting to think we should rename this post “Shit on David!!”..cuz it seems like that’s all people have been doin…but Yea! Slayer, I kno wut u are sayin and I do agree with some of it…and I too wasn’t too happy with him stepping on the red rag…Now that was “disrespectful” (Here goes that word again…lol).

  23. Josh on February 28th, 2008 6:22 pm

    Spydaman-

Off topic but, I train with Coban.

    carry on…

  24. poptart on February 28th, 2008 9:19 pm

My 2 cents on David cornering Bruce’s fight: Was annoyed as well that all i heard was “no regrets” whereas in the background you got Zidov telling Bruce to use combos or block with his leg etc. If you guys saw the web exclusive on youtube, there’s the one where Zidov complains about how David told him to shut up or he’d break his (zidov’s) finger. David then defends himself saying Bruce had asked him to keep the corner quiet or whatever. I think David did bruce a disfavour by not being able to offer concrete instructions pertaining to the fight with Yod. Like i said, my 2 cents, based on the way the fight was edited. peace.

  25. Spydaman on February 28th, 2008 10:28 pm

Hey Josh…off topic also…Does Coban still teach in Illinois??? My trainer used to train under him when He was in Upstate NY. I myself, never got to meet him……..U’re lucky!!

  26. Josh on February 28th, 2008 10:31 pm

Yeah, I live in Springfield Illinois. And of course, he is awesome!
He told me that he is looking to get a big gym together and run it like Thai gyms.

  27. Josh on February 28th, 2008 10:33 pm

Oh and the worst part is that most of the other students (I drive an hour to train with him) don’t even know who he is. They are mostly MMA wannabes. It’s not fair to die hard nak muays.

  28. Spydaman on February 28th, 2008 10:40 pm

Lucky you!…..U get to train with one of the best southpaws in the history of Muay Thai ( I’ma southpaw well). Anyway…don’t wanna stay off the topic too long….lol.
Hey Nop….I do have a question for David ( since that’s wut this posts was intended for in the first place)…..I wanna kno how did those people really make it on the show….cuz I don’t buy that “Tryout” shit!!…Well…I’m sure Zach, That american dude, Pitu, Zidov and a few of them probably did have to take the tryout tests. But I’m sure Yod and JWP had to do all of this. We’ve had a discussion at a different post saying that people were possibly picked for their Characters for some…and Nationality for others. So how did he and the others get to be picked out for the show??? Thanx in advance.

  29. Spydaman on February 28th, 2008 10:41 pm

btw:..I’m surprised any of those MMA guys knew who he is…lol

  30. Stack on February 29th, 2008 11:14 am

JWP? He’s the only person anyone knows of Muay Thai.

  31. spydaman on February 29th, 2008 11:47 am

JWP??? Naaaah!…..Tony Jaa (most blogs I have read seem to think that he can beat any Nakmuay in the ring….lol), Tong Po “U bleed like Mai Lynn!!……Mai Lynn!! Gooooooood Fuck!!!” and Sagat “Tiger uppercut!!!” are the only people everyone knows of Muay Thai.
In all seriousness though…Wouldn’t u think Buakaw would have to be more popular than JWP??

  32. spydaman on February 29th, 2008 11:47 am

uh oh…here I go venturing off topic again…sorry folks!

  33. Stack on February 29th, 2008 2:03 pm

Funny that you bring up Tong Po. JWP has shorts that read ‘nok su kow’. White warrior. Ironic, no?

  34. spydaman on February 29th, 2008 2:13 pm

hahahaha!…I didn’t kno that..but thanx for pointin’ it out…Now I’m gonna go lookin’ for those infamous shorts….lmao

  35. hawaii fight fan on February 29th, 2008 2:30 pm

wow you guys seem to be more critical of david than any other guy in the house. Could it be for some other reason????

  36. Ernesto on February 29th, 2008 5:30 pm

You must not have been around for “Bash on Rafik Week”…

  37. Stack on February 29th, 2008 5:55 pm

    Yeah that was actually worse.

  38. Greg on February 29th, 2008 10:58 pm

To be fair, David immediately went back to shake hands with Dzabar after the stunt. David is a cooler, less abrasive version of Raffik in my opinion. If I was stuck in a training camp for 6 weeks, I’d love to have him, Soren, Yod, Zidov, Zach and Pitu around.

JWP seems a bit cold-blooded to me, he’s a pure competitor and doesn’t seem too team-oriented IMO. Dzabar seems to have an edge on his shoulder, always looking for a reason to get amped. Naruepol is a bit quiet. Bruce seems a bit arrogant. Raffik is a bit too abrasive.

  39. Shadyeskimo on March 1st, 2008 3:51 am

Frenchie got a lot of negative comments, and David too, but did Dzhebar accept the handshake when Dave wanted to make up for it? Saw the Buakaw vs Dzhebar on Youtube, ok fight for him against a World Class Nak Muay and with hair on the head. He is not afraid of anyone the Good Dzhebar.!

  40. gr ch chinaman on March 1st, 2008 10:36 pm

muay thai is so much more fun to watch than mma in my opinion. wait…sorry my A.D.H.D. kicked in. david is a cool cat that just has a different way of psyching himself up for the fight and a little editing may have helped with his lack of followers but he has as much heart as dzhebar and they made an entertaining fight.

  41. alekos87 on March 1st, 2008 10:38 pm

I like big black guy with the big muscle!!!

  42. Colargol on March 3rd, 2008 9:19 am

I’ve heard the arguments but I still don’t get why people are on David’s back. He seemed like a pretty mellow guy, a good guy in fact.. To those who judge, I would recommend cutting the guy some slack (on account of you knowing precious little about him). Peace.
