Yaw-Yan “The Deadly Dance”
January 31, 2007 by nopstar
I was trolling around youtube the other day and came across this. To all my Pinoy peeps out there feel free to chime in anytime. Apparently there is a Filipino martial art called Yaw-Yan. When I think of Filipino art’s I think of Kali, Eskrima , Arnis etc. I’ve never seen Yaw-Yan. After watching some clips it seems a little similar to Muay Thai. They also seem to have adopted a lot of their strikes and kicks from kung fu. Â If you watch the vid of the guy working the bag, he throws some back hand’s and strikes with the inside of his forearms.
Watching the highlight vid, it seems all seems a little loose, especially the hands. I’m not sure if it’s the caliber of these fighters or if its indicative of the style.
Any of you guys know anything about Yaw-Yan?

The vid says the finest strikers, but I guess you never know where this was, or the actual quality of these fighters.
It looked pretty sloppy. I guess one of the things I notice in actual muay thai fights in Thailand is the precision of techniques. MT (in Thailand) just appears to be a whole different level.
Thanks for sharing though, did not even know this existed. I’ll have to ask the pinoy foo at the gym if he knows anything. You know, that guy that wears the short shorts and makes all the inappropriate comments.
Damn it! I don’t make inappropriate comments. Anyway, I am not familiar with Yaw Yan. I do know, however, that their was another filipino guy- with short shorts, maybe, from and trained in the Philippines. He looked like he did Muay Thai, but had some spinning back kicks just like Yaw Yan. He told me that he fought San Shao before, but I’m not sure about Muay Thai.
Also, if Yaw Yan is so great, why is it not more popular in the PI or anywhere else. Also, I have not heard of many Yaw Yan fighters going up against Muay Thai, which is generally thought of as the toughest ring sport in Asia.
I am not a Yaw-Yan practitoner,From what i know ,it’s a filippino art developed from arnis. There strikes are taken from arnis movements. They have a number of kicks which includes unorthodox kicks like scorpion kick and all. They are heavily conditioned .one ooof their famus champions is Emilano Zapata.

YAW YAW is famous in the Philippines to those who only have the exposure in Full Contact Karate Tournaments since early 80′s
It dominated the full Contact Tournaments with is undeafeted champion Emiliano Zapata.
It was never commercialized. That’s why it is not that famous but it is really deadly.
Not just on tournaments but on the streets as well.

Yaw Yan LogoYaw-Yan (Filipino Kickboxing/Footboxing) — Sayaw ng Kamatayan (Dance of Death) is the proper name for Yaw-Yan, a Filipino martial art developed by Napoleon Fernandez. The art resembles Muay Thai in a sense, but differs in the hip torquing motion as well as downward-cutting of its kicks.
Yaw-Yan (Sayaw ng Kamatayan/Dance of Death)Yup…May look like Muay but its not…Punches are from “Bolo” strikes based on the traditional “Itak” (Jungle knife) used by pinoys to cut rice or sugar canes and errrr…people(Historic Wars here in R.P.)…and kicks : Scorpion kicks, etch…have this downward cut style…a must see is the “Mountain Storm Kick”…
yaw yan resembles muay thai and san shou, it has as many kick as taekwondo, and it utilizes the spinning back fist thats what I’ve been looking for an art that will let me use my boxing ability with muay thai elbows, knees, and shins and similar kicks of taekwondo, and also some throws. I don’t believe in ground fighting but I do believe in knife fighting: as in sayok kali and baraw (Doce Pares) which are filipino arts, the filipino’s also have combat judo which is Dumog.
i am a yaw-yan fighter and i personally think that yaw-yan is a good sport. emiliano zapata. that name, the pride of yaw yan has never been defeated by a muay thai practitioner. it was when the ambassador of thailand here in the philippines asked for muay thai fighters to go up against sir emiliano. but did the muay thai peope prevail? nope, they cried.. yaw yan has more punching and kicking techniques than muay thai which makes them more versatile.muay thai king of the ring? maybe so..but lets wait and see.
The fighters looks kinda sloppy, No? No Thai fighter ever went up against Emiliano and prevailed? Put him up against a Seanchai Sor Kingstar or someone in that calibre. I would love to see that. Even Mohammad Ali knows how to lose.
I found a site with Emiliano’s photo’s. Too bad its only photos and not an actual video clip.

He’s small though, probably in Anuwat’s or Seachai’s weight class. He must have retired by now, i guess well never know.

If you guys want to see video’s of yaw yan fighter go to youtube and search for Hybrid Yaw Yan, or go to flckr.com and search again for hybrid yaw yan. you will see many yaw yan fighters on those sites. especially Vicente, Jerry, Ryan, Neil, and The Beast…
This happened in manila: Yaw yan guy had a fight against a black belt in Taekwondo and the Yaw yan guy beat the shit out of the taekwondo guy. Yaw Yan artists are dominating mix martial atrs in the Philippines right now.
