Ya Nam La Lonphon (or something to the affect of…)
March 11, 2010 by ldf
don’t know what this is comprised of, but this small bottle of evil is worthy of a lot of praise. Essentially, it’ll clean your intestines without the side effects of bloating, nausea, and headache. It’s effective, it’s fast and it’s what a number of people use to make weight.
I believe I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again – I’ve been known to score high on the sensitivity freak list. For whatever reason, the analogy of mining comes to mind. Historically, or perhaps, the urban legend reads as follows (I have no idea if this is fact or fiction): miners would bring canaries into the shafts with them. If the canary ceased to sing and/or died, they would evacuate a site realizing it was contaminated with poisonous gas. For our purposes here on MMT, in respect to the local medicines, treatments, whatever it is that I plan to explore and share with you, I am that canary. Basically, if I don’t react to it, the probability of it being safe is high.
Alright. Back to the bottle.
This faintly brown liquid has the distinguished aroma of fermented fauna with light notes of rubber, wood and sour bile. It’s nasty. It’s volatile. And it’s wonderfully effective. So effective that, should you ingest about four to six ounces of it, prepare to situate yourself wherever you are for roughly the next four to six hours. Chances are your body won’t give you a lot of notice when it decides to react – the reaction will come on strong and swift, and depending on the quantity you just drank, a number of times. Some of you will do fine with just a swig.
I wouldn’t suggest using it the day before/of your fight as the effects can linger for a few days. I also suggest using it wisely. I’ve been warned to neither drink an entire bottle nor to use it regularly (meaning consecutively for extended periods of time).
Alternately it’s useful for those times you’ve eaten less than clean food and you want to rid your body of the toxin.
As I’m completely illiterate in Thai…well, mostly illiterate in Thai (does being able to read sugar, honey, baht and some numbers count?), I believe this is called Ya Nam La Lonphon. Why do I say, I believe it’s called this? Because I asked two women and literally got about four answers. The first one being, it’s Thai medicine. Note: Ya Nam means medicine water/liquid medicine…but I added this in the name because they repeated it about five times preceding the rest. So…Ya Nam La Lonphon can be found in most pharmacies for approximately twenty five baht.
Can anyone read the ingredients? Can I assume I took a pic of the ingredients? Did I get the name right?….ah…Just remember the stern little blue man on the bottle…
More about Laura
I’m a Canadian who decided to quit my job, sell most of what I own, pack a suitcase, and skip continents to pursue a martial art I’m not particularly efficient in. A minimalist. A modern nomad. A kid who just likes having a good time.
My attraction to muay thai is that it’s an art with no wasted motion. It has been the greatest vehicle for my continual education. It’s incredibly challenging to me – both the physical and the mental game. The latter probably more so than the former.
Currently I’m in Bangkok training muay thai fulltime. The plan is to be here for a few years, but realistically, I have no idea where this path is leading, or what the timeline is. I like change and pushing my comfort zone. A lot. Nevertheless, muay thai will be the constant among the variables.
Be prepared for updates, rambling, video content and anything I’ve learned that I think may of use to you.
This hasn’t been easy, but so far, its been a pretty sick ride.

Very funny and entertaining reading. Thank you.
training in thailand is becoming less and less attractive.
I straight hate this stuff. The few times Iv fought in Thailand my bosses/trainers have insisted I drink it after a fight claiming that the flushing of your system helps you get well quick from all your bruises.Telling me that its standard practice to take it after a fight for bkk fighters.I fought they were taking the piss and having a good laugh at my expense!!Nothing tastes more like poison. The minute it hits your taste buds every part of your body tells you you shoudnt be drinking it.Iv never tastes liquid metal but this is what it tastes like to me?My trainer insisted that when you swig it down you got to squeeze half a lime down your throat at the same time.To be honest that did make it vaguely more palatable.
manant – definitely standard practice after a fight from what i’ve been exposed to and for the same reason too.
i caught a really thin and tiny kid with a bottle of it a few weeks ago. he was taking it between fights, i asked him why – his answer was it makes him kick faster…i have no idea. ?
never saw anyone add lime . thanks.
Funny response from the kid Laura. Makes him kick faster,ha ha, thats really funny Laura. As far as it comes to cutting weight its really better to take your time and cut weight rather than using shortcut approaches like this and its better to avoid substances like this.
I remember one of the fighters saying that these shortcut approaches are dangerous especially b4 a fight. Better avoid.
koolkick, i agree with you, but unfortunately, in a lot of cases, you’re not given too much notice before a fight to drop weight out here – ie. one week, sometimes less. that time you write about, often is a luxury. i’ve seen so many guys, use the above, then literally starve themselves as they continue to train/use rubber suits. eat only tiny mouthfuls of fruit sporadically (sometimes nothing – depending on how many days they have), almost no water and shoot glucose to not pass out. if the promoter tells you you’re fighting at a certain weight and you don’t make it – you’re fucked. at least, that’s been my experience. you don’t make weight, you don’t come back to fight under that promotion.
or perhaps – you’ll have to wait awhile to fight under that promotion. i’ve seen that as well.
I’m pretty sure Thai script is the most unnecessarily complicated writing system in existence. After a month or two I had a rough idea of the consonant sounds made by a fraction of the characters, and some of the more straightforward vowel markers too…But determining the tone of a given syllable is a helluva gordian knot.
Laura i do agree with you about making weight in a short time is a difficult, but between each fight fighters do have 4 weeks time and those fighters fighting once for every 2 weeks stay in shape and don’t struggle to make weight. But maybe if u r asked to take up a fight in a very short period then there is no other go, but still there are a lotta better methods for losing weight.
As long as the method you use does not have an impact on your performance on the fight any method is accecptable.
koolkick, i’m too tired to be polite. perhaps each fighter, in your experience has 4 weeks time to make weight and others don’t struggle to make weight – but i’ve been living out here in gyms for a year and a half and no, that’s not always the case. and i’m talking about thais. high level, world champion thais. yes, they stay in shape, but sometimes, from my experience, they’re told to drop weight. a lot of it. and with little notice.
your patronizing tone is not appreciated – we all have different experiences – i’m relaying mine. you think i’m making this shit up?
and this piece wasn’t about me stating this was the best method to make weight. i wrote..
and it’s what a number of people use to make weight.
so again, please….
This sure would have been preferable to my old method of making weight last minute.
ldf – its sort of like doing tequila but no where near as enjoyable and with a worse hangover!!you down said vile metal liquid then bite in to a slice of the old manao within seconds of imbibing the filthy poo liquid. it does make it vagualy more palatable.Give it a try?!
stack i thought u died
Good to know ;-) Thanks
Peace&MT
of course as a pharmacist my curiosity is burning to figure out what it is. There are not many stimulant laxatives in use anymore, but I suspect..based on the color and description of taste, and immediate and violent bowel effects..that it contains mostly castor oil. In the caribbean my parents would often get “purges” , as kids, before the school term started. Their parents theorized that a few tbsp of castor oil, lots of diarrhea and you would clean out the toxins..thus making your mind sharp. They returned the favour to us young uns by making a tea out of senna leaves and forcing us to drink it..yep..same shitting effect!!!!
Incidentally castor beans (source for the oil)are the source for ricin a highly toxic extract that was used in many Cold war assassinations and investigated as an application for a Bio-weapon.
So be careful with that stuff..it may do more than start a war in your derriere=)
Not dead yet SE lol. I was on a bit of a sabbatical. BTW LDF looks pretty shredded in her profile pic. It looks like it’d be tough to squeeze out any remnant of water weight.
Laura i just told my view about losing weight and never meant to patronize. Ofcourse whatever you are saying in this article is a fact and its good and informative. So sorry if i my remarks sounded like i am patronizing.
thanks koolkick – tone is an easy thing to get misconstrued on here.
Teehee! Awesome! My trainer made me tote 5 bottles of that shit back with me the last time I was in Thailand…never tried it myself. He said the same thing…drink it after your fight and it will ‘help you bounce back faster’. Here’s the thing..I’m a nurse and anything that is going to make you shit and piss is not going to help you ‘bounce back faster’-it may help you lose water weight…but that’s about it. It’s a diuretic-it’s gonna dehydrate the hell out of you. I think drinking a ton of water would actually have a better effect. (for bouncing back purposes)…but the bottle is kind of cool and hey…we can not underestimate the placebo effect-if some kid thinks it will make him kick faster…it will ;)
you can also try osmotic laxatives instead of stimulant ones e.g magnesium citrate. I don`t know what they are called in Thailand but here in US you can get Mag Citrate bottles. magnesium salts is also Epsom salt (which u can use as a laxative and to soak in after your leg has been tenderized=)
Instead of inducing contractions, drinking one of these bottles causes an increased salt concentration in your GI tract, in order to dilute it water moves out of your body and into your GI, the reverse of what normally occurs.(its called a reverse osmotic gradient). The rapid induction of water causes the bowel evacuation. YOU lose not only whats in your tubes..but ALSO water weight. It is not as harsh as the castor oil etc.
As a rule, wherever water goes in (or out) the body, so does sodium. If you use these be sure to rehydrate with ‘lytes as you will lose sodium if you use enough of this.
Incidentally the bacteria that causes cholera affects us in the same way but on a massive level. The water loss can kill in hours if not days.
padkeemaw – just to clarify….the magnesium/Epsom salts you can pick up at any drug store are the internal grade/edible?
thanks for all the info
I thought I could help you out with the name and the ingredients as I am a native Thai speaker. Here it goes.
The medicine is called “Ya Nam La Domphon.” It literally means a “call to arms” medicine.
As for the ingredients, I hardly know them as they are mostly ancient folk medicinal knowledge (if that makes sense). But I googled them up for you guys.
The first line in the list of ingredients actually consists of 16 total ingredients. I list them in thai here. If you really want to know their english names (some don’t have any), you can try google them up
??????????? = ????????? (Stephania pierrel Diels.), ????? , ???????, ????????, ???????????, ?????????, ????????????
????????????? = ???????, ????????, ????????, ???????????????, ??????????????, ?????????, ??????????????, ?????????, ?????????????.
There are some pictures here http://www.pharm.chula.ac.th/museum/th-crud/su-5.htm. Scroll to the bottom of the page.
The second line has two things: ??????????????????, ????????????????. Both have the same common english names, Smilax. The scientific name, however, is different. The first one is Smilax corbularia Kunth. The second one is Smilax microchina T. koyama.

The third one is ??????. Common name: Malayan Spurge Tree or Triangular Spurge. Scientific Name: Eupho Frigona Haw, Euphorbia antiquorum L., Euphorbia origona Haw. Photo’s available here http://www.shc.ac.th/learning/botanical-garden/217.htm.

Lastly, ???????????? is Epsom salts, as Padkeemaw has already said. It acts as a laxative.
So for the pharmacist out there, enjoy googling ;)
lol, it seems that your website does not support Thai fonts. Too bad.
What i wanna know is whether Thai boxers do yarba every now and then to give them energy for training.
tanwa – that’s amazing. thank you!
Staring at a bottle of this stuff right now, I think our trainer got it in Thai Town here in Hollywood….guess what? It has the ingredients listed in English!

I boxed and I have four children who compete in Judo, and BJJ, and study Muay Thai on the side. They have 5 US Judo championships between them and numerous silver and bronze National medals. The two eldest are girls. The 1st is at the Olympic training Center. (www.gravesjudo.com)
I say all this to make it clear we have heard from many top experts on weight control and training. And I can tell you it is ALWAYS a very bad idea to use drug of any type incl laxatives. I find it almost impossible to believe this liquid is a good idea because if it were they’d be using it all over the world for top athletes who have to watch and cut weight. They do spend millions every year on researching this field.
For most any jock the only path to being good is discipline, and especially SELF- dicipline. Every time you have to cut just prior to a fight you weaken yourself and make evrything harder and make yourself more vulnerable to sickness. It is also just really bad for your body in the long term.
The more you do it while young the more you insure you will be very over weight as an adult because you are training your body to fight you to store every bit of fat it can get. And it never gets tired of trying like you’ll get tired of trying to keep it off.
It is far wiser for health, strength and your future to work daily to keep your weight close to the weigh in mark. This discipline will eventually convince your body there is no need to take in more than it burns and it will become easier to stay where you want to be. There is a great deal of science on this if you look for it.
