The Rants and Ramblings of a Muay Thai Fan

XFA- Xtreme Fighting Association

February 11th, 2008 · 28 Comments

Big thanks to “Wade Willet” for passing this along. A little while back the XFA held it’s invitiation only tryouts. Clearly somebody from the XFA needs to contact Nuengsiam asap. Anyway, I like where their going… the XFA is going to be a stand up only, fighting league.

I think the inaugural fights will be held in Vegas, It isn’t Muay Thai but nonetheless it’s nice to see someone is trying to get some standup going again, I just hope there is enough room for them.

A quick glance at the rules, I can see it’s going to be held in a ring, three 3 min rounds not sure if clinching during knees is allowed, and there are NO Elbows? I guess elbows are too xtreme… I’m sure if they allowed elbows it would be a hell of a lot more difficult to get fights sanctioned. Any of you guys know anything about that?

I think in any western country its frowned upon to hurt eachother even in your own choosen sport, especially with the unpadded elbows and knees, but for some reason knees are more accepted than elbows(my guess is that its very hard to knee someone in the head, compared to Elbows) and safety is first here, I live in Denmark, and it is hard i think if not impossible to get permission to fight with elbows, and maybe usa is similar in perception.

I don’t know about this; it kinda sounds like Chuck Norris’ horrific “World Fight League.” This XFA may be different because it’s three rounds, but the WFL turned into spastic TKD people. But, from the setup of this, it sounds like K-1. This sounds like it could potentially be a great idea, so hopefully I’m just being paranoid. I just get a little skeptical when people spell extreme with an “x” (ahem, XFL).

Some decent fighters believe it or not. I suspect it’ll belly flop if promoted dumbly.

Commentary by Lisa King in Vegas too. Toddy anyone? Nothing about this first impression impresses me.

I’m xtremely pissed they didn’t invite Neungsiam. Get it, “x”tremely pissed, kind of a play on words, like those witty XFA guys did. God damn I’m funny.

They are not going to invite any ex Lumpini fighter… Because most of them would get there ass peeled… And that would make bad TV…

  • 7 Anonymous // Feb 11, 2008 at 3:55 pm

check out michelle waterson on fighters’ page. hope she can fight the way she loks

  • 8 Shadyeskimo // Feb 11, 2008 at 4:25 pm

Well i think it would be awesome TV to have as many thais as possible, you probably do too. But i guess we dont represent the majority.

  • 9 Stack // Feb 11, 2008 at 4:58 pm

“check out michelle waterson on fighters’ page. hope she can fight the way she loks”

Yeah because fresh jack-off material is really what’s important here. No one here really cares about the actual fighting or Muay Thai part.

Stack: You are more than welcome not to visit this blog if you don’t like the “discussions”. I do agree there’s a lot of non-sense but oh well..

  • 11 Stack // Feb 11, 2008 at 5:42 pm

Thanks Ernesto. Since everyone else is free to express their opinions I’m expressing mine. You agree but are upset because the one thing of focus for Anonymous is spank material. Sounds like you aren’t sure where you stand.

I regret when fighting sports are marketed/named as “EXTREME” etc etc, especially for Muay Thai. I feel it does a disservice to the sport, making it seem more like a bloodsport brawl, than a highly difficult sport, practiced by respectful individuals.

  • 13 frank // Feb 11, 2008 at 5:58 pm

*I should say “practiced by respectful professional athletes”

Hmm, looks interesting and has potential.

“Gary discusses the XFA and stand up fighting with K-1 legend Tony Valente.” Ha!!

  • 16 nae // Feb 11, 2008 at 9:39 pm

it’s going to be k-1 rules all the way. no clinching, one knee at a time, and no elbows.

the first fight will be march 22 in vegas at the hilton hotel. i’m talking to the promoter about my fight on this card so more news on that in a few.

as long as the promoters keep smart this should be pretty good.

  • 17 Spydaman // Feb 12, 2008 at 6:51 am

Shit!….No clinching??…One knee at a time??….Damn! Curious to see which famous fighters are goin to participate other than “K-1 legend Tony Valente”…..lol. “bang” Ludwig, maybe??…Kit Cope?? Malaipet?? or everyone’s favorite fighter……..Raffik Bakouri !!!

  • 18 Ernesto // Feb 12, 2008 at 1:07 pm

Upset? Sounds like you’re the only one emotionally invested in this..

  • 19 Ernesto // Feb 12, 2008 at 1:11 pm

Sure hope it picks up some steam.. But no clinching? WTF?! Rafik all the way Baby… So this is the answer to K-1 pulling out of Vegas..

  • 20 Stack // Feb 12, 2008 at 1:30 pm

“Upset? Sounds like you’re the only one emotionally invested in this.”

You mean because I actually care enough that I take Muay Thai as more than yank material?

  • 21 yknocka // Feb 12, 2008 at 1:55 pm

I hope they do better than what the XFL did.

  • 22 greg // Feb 12, 2008 at 4:50 pm

I wonder why elbows would not be allowed. They are allowed in MMA, even on the ground, so why would elbows in a standup fight be any more dangerous?

  • 23 nae // Feb 12, 2008 at 10:16 pm

the rules were chosen because the owners like karate style and k-1 style more.

i’m not surprised that muay thai has taken another back seat to kickboxing in the us yet again.

  • 24 cowpaste // Feb 14, 2008 at 2:15 pm

Meh, I don’t think it’s a big deal that elbows aren’t allowed. They get more fighters this way, and less fights that end to stupid bloody cuts. The States could use *any* type of stand-up promotion, Muay Thai or not.

  • 25 spydaman // Feb 14, 2008 at 2:38 pm

U kno wut Cowpaste……u do make a lotta sense….we do need some stand up promotion whether it be Muay Thai or Kickboxing (K-1 rules or course not that international rules B.S).
I would still luv to see some elbows though…lol…I like “stupid bloody cuts”….lol.

  • 26 nae // Feb 14, 2008 at 3:06 pm

also if the fight allows elbows doctors are more likely to let bloody fights continue where if there’s any cut in k-1 they stop it.

like my last fight in the east coast, i was getting stomped in the first two rounds and got cut but the third round i almost scored a ko but the doctor stopped the fight cuz of my cut even though there was no blood.

  • 27 Ernesto // Feb 14, 2008 at 3:26 pm

    “Stupid bloody cuts” kick ars..

  • 28 cowpaste // Feb 15, 2008 at 12:51 am

While I really enjoy watching full Muay Thai rules, I personally would not participate in a fight with elbows simply because I don’t want permanent giant scars on my forehead…. I bet a lot of professional fighters feel the same way, and the XFA most likely attracts more participants because they do not allow elbows.

And yeah, “stupid bloody cuts” are fun to watch when they happen, but I really, really hate it when they stop a fight. I’m a big fan of MMA too, and they get SOOOOOOOOOO much bad press when fighters end up covered in blood. Bad press would be DEATH to a startup promotion like XFA (god, what a horrible name). Of course, this is all just a personal opinion. :P
