Vintage JWP
April 3, 2008 by nopstar
While we’re still fresh on the subject of JWP, I thought I’d throw in some vintage JWP footage. Props to Hellfighter of the K-1fans forum, for sharing this.
J-Dub what’s up with that ring entrance man? I think I read that in this vid he was 18 and 6 mo. Prior to him heading to Mueng Thai. It think he said in episode 11 his fight with Zidov was going to be his 91st fight? I knew he’s been in game a while, but that’s putting time in.

Man, Parr really sucked. It makes me feel a little better for being a chump in the ring too. You gotta admire his enthusiasm getting in the ring. Parr’s got a real lust for life. Huzzah!
JWP always looks so stiff, he has heavy hands but i think he’s over rated.
There are a lot of thai’s way better but everyone is all nuts about JWP he’s a nice guy, but i think slightly over rated.
You cant hate on JWP he puts in work SON!!!
JWP always comes to win- and put a hurting on his opponent. He has been in there with some of the toughest fighters around- Sakmonkol, Orono, not to mention Yodseanklai, and numerous top Max fighters. I think that he has earned a reputation for being one of the best.
He didn’t get his rep by his looks, thats for sure.
Hellava thing to say when he has contributed and achieved so much to the sport. At what point is someone under or overrated Anonymous? Who is your ideal fighter if I may ask?
I just love how some people come on here, shit on someone else but make sure that their name is “anonymous”. That’s the second time I have seen someone belittle JWP with their identity hidden, could it be because they know that JWP frequents this site???
Anyway, Matt…Did u really think he sucked??….he looked pretty decent to me.
Tong Po, I agree wit everything u said except for the last part….just because u fight da best doesn’t make u the best, just ask the Korean dude who last fought Buakaw. In order to be one of the best….u have to beat some of the best.
Greg, …hahahahahaah…..Funny one!
For those complaining, well at least video started with a great song from Pantera. :)
I think JWP looked really immature as a fighter. He didn’t look like he knew anything about the clinch. He’s a little stiff, but obviously has a “go get em” attitude. I think he looks like what he was at the time, an amateur fighter. Obviously he’s a better fighter now.
Its nice seeing these early videos. Most of the fighters we see on the site are high level professionals. Sometimes we forget that they too were two bit chumps who couldn’t get over the ropes right, something I’ve struggled with myself. Professional fighters, like Parr, weren’t always good.
Ure right about the clinch. As a matter of fact other than Thais I dunno too many fighters that are really good in the clinch period.
Other than the clinch though…I think he was pretty decent wit his combinations…..maybe I should watch the fight again….Thanx for replying.
MTDave, here’s my 2 cent
of underrated and overrated fighters (Muay Thai and K1)
Underrated fighters: Sinbi, Seanchai, Nopparat, JLB
Overrated: Masato, Masato, Masato, Semmy Shilt…and yes I do think JWP is a lil overrated.
But those are only my opinions and assumptions based on what I hear, see and read or don’t hear, see and read.
Not needlessly backing up JWP. I rate him a half notch below Dekkers, Bill, and Farid.
There is a large contingent of fans that lift up there hero’s and put them up high on a pedestal. There are world champions that never even fight outside of their home country.
Even though you may not like JWP, he has done enough to be considered world class and rated accordingly. I haven’t heard anyone rate him P4P the best in the world or attributed Godlike powers to him. Have a little heart for the ambassadors of the sport.
You are correct Spydaman- however, JWP has given many of those top fighters very hard fights. He did not get shut out by any means. JWP has beaten some of the top guys as well.
MTDave, I appreciate the friendly debate….Let’s not get ahead of ourselves…lol…JWP is nowhere near Ramon Dekker or Dany Bill’s level….He might be a half a notch behind Farid Villaume though.
I don’t dislike JWP, I dunno him….I’m just not fond of his style of fighting….but I like the character he portray in the media and in the show outta the ring…he seems like a really cool guy.
I totally agree that he is a WORLD CLASS fighter…definitely…100%. Being a world class fighter to me means that he has made an impact in the world of Muay thai, has fought some of the best, has made a name for himself, has fought a lotta battles…Yes he is world class in that aspect.
Now do I think he is one of the best Muay Thai fighters in the world???…..NO!!!!…I can name of the top of my head 20 fighters who I think are better than him pound for pound.
To his defense though I can also name 100 more who are not as good as him…..lol.
I’m starting to feel bad now because it seems as if I’m trying to take the props away from him but I hope people understand where I’m coming from.
JWP, if u read this, I truly appreciate what you have done for the world of MUAY THAI!
Also…may I add that my statements are my opinions not facts. I’m just tryin to be the Devil’s Advocate here.
Tong Po, Soren beat Johmod not too long ago……but to me that fight meant nothing because I doubt Soren could ever beat Johmod when he was at the top of his game. If JWP has beaten fighters while they were at the top of their game….then I retrieve what I said about him not being one of the top muay thai fighters.
Also…we have to figure out what the “Top” is…are we talkin “Top 5″?, “top 10″? or “top 100″?…That lil piece of info alone may change the whole direction of our debate.
Yup, I did get ahead of myself. Sorry for the stance I took.
My favorite fighters are actually the lighter weight Thai fighters from close to 20 years ago. Hippy, Toto, Rambo, Samson, Kaensak and Karuhart. I would say that they are my gold standard for Muay Thai.
I would also say that I hardly like watching the heavier Thais fight, and more-so Westerners (in comparison).
However, if we are to put the western representatives in the context of where they came from and the hurdles that had to overcome to gain a spot in sport , I would say that it is much harder for an outsider to accomplish what a Thai can with generations of development and the best pool of competition available on the planet.
The hard work that guys like Kaman, Dekkers, Bill, and Parr laid out will cement their place in history as influences they’ve had on the sport.
Jomhod is/was a very good fighter. You are correct again that his better days are behind him. Also, his prime weight is a bit below what he is currently fighting at- same is true for many older “war horses.” Danny Bill and Dekkers were far more fan favorites in their time (Dekkers more so), but there were quite a few that could give either one a more than either could handle. I guess in the end we can easily say that fan favorites rarely do not equat best fighter.
Oh, and you are not taking props away from JWP, I am sure he criticisms are not new to him!
Thank you for understanding Tong Po. Dany has always been one of my favorite fighters of all time….so methodical and technical…I love that in a fighter. Dekker was a brawler but I just love his determination…and his hook-cross-hook-low kick are the best, next to Hoost’s….lol.
MTDave….Hippy and Toto are unknown to me. U must be goin really old school on me….lol. The Rambo vs Rambaa fights were legendary.
Kaman, Bill, Dekker…I totally agree……ok…JWP too….lmao….just teasin.
Let me ad some names to that list……Diafat, Greene, Ballantine, Hyppolite, Gong, Menor and of course Jean Claude Van Damne and Quissy (Tong Po)…:-D
Bloody hell, thats a old one, was only my 12th fight. I had n=one more fight in Australia before I moved to Thailand for 4 years and learnt how to grapple.
No way was I a good fighter back then but crickeys, who is after only 12 fights???
Cheers for the comments gentlemen, all taken on the chin. I love to fight, I love to train, I love to see the world fighting in other countries and making money from the sport I love. If I make a few fans along the way awesome, if not its all good. I am living my dream though so I cant complain.
Ops, that last one was from me!
Much love JWP, we only wish we could be as accomplished as you! I wish I went with my dream as well but I wouldn’t have made it as far as you. Maybe in my next life….
I think hes overrated…
at Badminton…I think we could all take him to town there.
“Cheers for the comments gentlemen, all taken on the chin.” I hope u didn’t take any of my comments as criticism, I was merely playin Devil’s Advocate…Then again…I’m sure u really couldn’t care less….I mean u are Freakin’ JWP!!!…The freakin’ “GUN SLINGER”!!!
Keep doin wut u doin!
Toshio Fujiwara, people – a farang that won a Rajadamnern title at LIGHTWEIGHT. Didn’t need to be bigger to beat his opponents either. Yes, 1978 was a long ass time ago.
Don’t get me wrong, Kaman was great but his exploits in Muay Thai weren’t that impressive. It’s not even fair to mention him along with fighters like Dekkers or Bill.
JWP rulez!!! that is one tough man and puts in work..
jwp is nowhere near dekkers imo…… hes a great guy but i have yet to see a fight that impresses me from him. maybe someone could post some. i do greatly respect the fact hes dedicated his life to the sport and speaks thai though. i also really wish he slaughtered raffik like he did zidov….. even though i dont rly hate raffik like the majority of people.
You cant even hate on raffik he is a good fighter…
JWP gets mad respect and that fact he bangs wit YOD is mad respect also…
I have only seen JWP vs Buakaw, and Vs Yodsaenklai and in the Contender, Against Raffik feelings got the better of him(Human) And against Zidov WOW what a display of experience and Skill. Buakaw it was a close fight and to give BPP soo much competition is World Class, against Yod, even after the Head Kick, JW still pushed Yod and got in a couple of good hits. I cant seem to Find the Fight against Sakmongkol but I will.
Parr vs. Sakmongkol
Quality is half-decent
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ix_YQsgHwWc
Kamatari, I do think we should bring out Kaman’s exploit because he had a big impact in bringing Muay Thai to the Netherland. SE.
I was rooting for Raffik mainly because he’s french though and so am I….lol.
ShadyEskimo, “against Zidov WOW what a display of experience and Skill”….Yup, couldn’t have said it better.
“Buakaw it was a close fight and to give BPP “…I disagree.
JWP did show that he was one tough ass dude against Yod, all the respect to him.
how exactly is masato overrated?
jwp is a warrior
SE, I can’t believe u would even ask that question??….lol…..How is he “NOT” overrated???
Anyway here’s what I pulled outta dictionary.com “o·ver·rate
To overestimate the merits of; rate too highly.”
Masato is highly overrated.
[sarcasm]
I agree, Masato is highly overrated. Who has he beaten to deserve such acclaim???
[/sarcasm]
other than Buakaw (once)…..NOBODY truly worth mentioning.
Besides what “acclaim” are u talkin about??
JWP- cool for posting on this blog! Keep up the great work for a great sport!
Masato, when truly focused is a force to be reckoned with. He has beaten such notables as Buakaw, Kraus, Kozo, Zambidis, and Maurad Sari just to name a few. Also, just to win the Max Championship is an achievement in itself. Sure, he is a hot pretty boy, that gets plenty of fanfare, but he didn’t get to that point in his career by looks alone.
Thanks HighRevinSi, Tough one For JW
just watch the buakaw vs masato fight. both of em. if u think hes overrated that is laughable. i personally dont think much of japanese fighters. masato is a good/tough one.
Ok SE…I’m glad I can make u laugh, laughter makes u live longer.
Masato is a good/tough one…..definitely…he’s not only good…he’s actually very good. Now is he great???……as a matter of fact, is he as great as the japanese media makes him to be?? if u answer Yes then that is laughable …and u’ll belong to the group of people who are the cause of me calling him overrated.
He won the K1 WM battle once..yes…before Buakaw and Souwer were even in the picture.
K1 is tryin so hard to help their Golden Boy win the championship again that they are goin through all kinda loops to give him an advantage (because even K1 World Max know that he is overrated)…and don’t say it ain’t so.
He even had the nerves to go on TV and say that if he was to retire no other Japanese fighters would be good enough for him to pass the torch to.
I believe he might still be the highest paid fighter in K1 WM….mostly based on his Marketability as opposed to his skills. (he’s overrated!).
I’ve heard people call him Mr World Max (overrated!)
By the way…u still haven’t told me what acclaim u were talkin about.
At the end of the day I have never said that Masato wasn’t good….I said he was overrated so let’s not try to turn this into a “skill” contest.
He’s gotten his fame from the Japanese girls throwing their panties at him.
As far as I’m concern he’s the most overrated fighter I kno and I kno a loooooooootta fighters.
Tong Po..ur right he didn’t get to that point by looks along
On a side note I would love to see Masasto and JWP fight each other they both have really good hand skills.
Also…I would luv to see the multiple knees in the clinch reinstated.
Oh and SE…..No hard feelings towards u…we just have a difference of opinions…
oh i know spyda. funny thing i saw his fights with an unbiased point of view. never even hearing about any pretty boy hype or being japans pride and joy. first i saw him get his ass destroyed by buakaw[ i found out about masato through buakaw fights lol]. then i saw him beat buakaw. his fight with buakaw when he won was fucking amazing. i looked some of his other fights. he seems to have a better understanding of muay thai than any other japanese fighter ive seen. all these japanese fighters ive seen are akward and it seems like they have black belts in karate with one month muay thai experience at a pos gym. haha
I gained another level of respect for Masato when he fought Souwer in the final….the man’s leg was completely destroyed by Buakaw and then got damaged a lil bit more by Kyshenko……and still continued….I admire Masato for his Samurai-like conduct (I still think he’s overrated though….hehehe).
Masato, Very good, Overrated? I dunno!!! Masato vs JWP would be nice, Spyda what did you think of the JwP vs Sombat?
Spydaman, so you don’t like Masato because he makes a lot of money, being chased by girls and being Japanese teen idol?
Don’t need to compare fighting and business abilities.
Fighting abilities… anyone who beats Buakaw is great. It was not a lucky shot. BPP had two rounds ahead to destroy Masato, but that never occur. Masato proved to be as great fighter as Buakaw is. Maybe BPP isn’t in his prime anymore, but that’s another issue.
We’ll let’s just see how Masato will prove himself this year.
Shady, it was a fun fight, I can’t pinpoint any time where JWP even slightly had the upper hand over Buakaw so to me it was an unanimous decision…It wasn’t a slaughter like Buakaw vs Kohi ( Now that was the funniest fight I had ever seen in my life).
Gusnark…..”so you don’t like Masato because he makes a lot of money, being chased by girls and being Japanese teen idol?”….I never said that.
Yeah BPP vs Kohi blew my mind when I saw that, Sombat was pissed over the Leg trip in the Beginning and Kohi got scared, But Kohi had some amazingly good fights in the past before Buakaw destroyed him. But lets see what Masato brings this year, and hope JWP reaches the final in Contender.
[...] He sent me an email a couple of weeks ago… thanks for sharing. This was similar to the Vintage JWP footage I put up months ago. It’s amazing how much far you can come in 11 years. I guess [...]
