The Rants and Ramblings of a Muay Thai Fan

Tyrone Spong vs. Amir Zeyada

March 27th, 2007 · 9 Comments

Some interesting news for the Spong fan’s out there… I wrote a post a few weeks ago about the young, up and coming fighter Tyrone Spong. Tyrone fought Sunday night against Amir Zeyada. Zeyeda (23-7-2) is trained by Thom Harinck of Chakuriki. As you remember Tyrone was on a bit of a tear, winning his last 8 fights by KO.

This is the only footage I could find. I’ll be sure to post something more clear when I can find it. If any of you come across anything please be sure to shoot me an email. “Petteri” you’re from Utrecht… did you make it to this fight?

Spong pretty much dominated the 1st and 2nd rounds. It was clear to me he had the better hands and was able to land a lot of his power punches at will. Is it me or did he look like he was able to end it in the 2nd if he wanted to?

Well as you know all it takes is one good blow. If you don’t want to watch the whole clip you can fast forward to about 6:40 and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Wow…after watching the first two rounds, I thought Amir was a dead man!

Yo, that was a totally lame ending. Did you notice 1) how fast the count was against Spong as opposed to Amir’s standing eight counts? That first knockdown.. the count was super fast. Watch it again!

And what was with the dude jumping in the ring at the end before the fight was over?? Was this in Amir’s hometown? That fight looked shady at the end. The ref does fast counts and then calls the fight. There looked to be several times where Spong could have or should have ended it in the first and second right.

Am I tripping? I am not on either side, but it just didn’t look right.

Very shady all the way around. Looked like a Don King Production.

    Dii Mak-

You’re right. I hadn’t noticed it initially but it’s definitely a fast count.

    “Petteri” where you at?

Damn, too bad. And Spong wants to move up to the HW division?

Hmm. I must say that I was disappointed about the whole show. Maybe it’s just that my expectations are too high, but it all looked so shady and amateur-ish.

Sure, they had 6 plasma screens, but with the most anticipated fight in a long time ending like this, those screens didn’t help much.

Personally, I think that Spong started to dictate the pace of the fight towards the end of the first round, and could have finished it in the second whenever he felt like it. It almost looked like he wanted to stall it, perhaps to please the crowd before he beats the man he hasn’t yet been able to beat once… who knows?

Amir ‘The Sphinx’ Zeyada is from Amsterdam, and there was a huge crowd from the capital city in the famous ice hall. I don’t know about that looser who bounced around in the ring towards the end, but he sure annoyed the heck out of us in the audience.

One more thing, I just watched a video summary of the fight, along with a few questions for both of the fighters.

Apparently, Spong’s trainer had planned for two rounds, after which Zeyada would have been finished. Spong just kept saying he fought badly and that he hadn’t expected this.

Amir’s only comment was, “The King of the Ring is not the King of the Ring anymore, that’s me now.”

According to the reporter, it was a surprise knockout for Spong, who was the definite favourite.

Is it true this is spongs second loss to zeyada??

    Kevin-

Yeah, I think I read on the forums that they fought each other 2 years ago. Apparently Spong was stopped in the 4th round of the bout. Zeyada seems like a punk too… it’s got to be a very, very tough loss for Spong.
