Tyrone Spong Next K-1 Champ?

March 7, 2007 by nopstar

Tyrone SpongThose of you who’ve been keeping up with the Dutch Muay Thai scene have undoubtedly already heard of Tyrone Spong. I’ve mentioned him in a previous post but for those who haven’t heard of him, I guarantee you will. Tyrone is being billed as the next big thing. His fighting record is an impressive 63-0-1, and seems to be getting stronger; he won his last 8 fights by KO. Here is his last fight with Kaoklai.

Apparently he came to the States briefly to sharpen up his boxing with Floyd Mayweather Sr. Mayweather Sr. believes that Spong has serious potential to be a boxing champ.

Currently Spong trains at the Fighting Factory under Lucien Carbin, a Dutch Muay Thai legend. Carbin has trained other fighters such as Overeem, Yvel, et al.

Spong is looking to move up from 76 kg (168 lbs) to the 90-95 kg range (198-205 lbs). He’s quite confident that he’s going to be the next K-1 heavyweight champion

Here is a short clip of him on Euro Sport, don’t worry they don’t speak Dutch through the whole interview.

Doesn’t it seems to me like it’s a lot of weight to gain while trying to maintain your speed? Then again what the hell do I know?

He’s an awesome fighter but, I think going up in weight for him is a bad move.

Very fast. Like a Muay Thai Mayweather. Seems far to small for HW. He could move a lot faster than most HW (like Kaoklai did), evading punches and kicks, but I still would like him to stay at 168 or even Light Heavyweight.

He looks sick but I also agree that going up to HW would change what makes him so damn good – speed. If he takes baby steps and keeps patient then i’m sure he can get to HW but not in time to be the “next” K-1 Champ.

At first, I was a lil upset to see Kaoklai go down against him..I had no idea who this guy was; but I have been hearing his name more and more lately and found out that this guy’s record is outta this world. Even though to this day I maintain that if Kaoklai had taken the fight a lil bit more serious and had kept his hands up (Which he hardly does, period) he wouldn’t have gotten knocked out, I can’t help but wonder if it would have changed the fact that he lost. Hopefully a long awaited re-match would ease my mind. Spong seems like a very cool guy…and he’s good as hell..I wish him the best of luck. Anyone knows how old he is????

I’de like to see him fight any weight group and anyone… He reminds me of a Ray Sefu in his early days!
