Tricks of the Trade

March 20, 2009 by nopstar

Thanks to  Rishi for sending this along.  This was a clip from a recent seminar with Jongsanan at Tampa Muay Thai.

For those of you who are new to MuayThai, Jongsanan sort of a big deal… actually he’s a MuayThai legend.  You don’t get to throw around the term legend too often, but Jongsanan is a living MuayThai legend.

It’s sort of strange referring to him that way, as he’s a friend, but he is what he is.   So in this clip he’s showing a muaythai technique that no doubt came about from years of wrecking fools.  This tip will come in useful if your like me and are “flexibility challenged”.    Damn, I need to work on that… stretching’s good um kay.

If you’re having difficulties understanding him don’t feel bad, even when we’re speaking Thai it sounds like that!

What Noom is saying is that there is no way that he can deliver a head or neck kick.  He can’t kick that high…  If he continues to aim at his opponents shoulder a combination of sweat and momentum will allow his shin to skip off his opponents shoulder into his poor head.

It’s always nice to hear from others who are flexibility challenged. And a nak muay legend who can’t kick that high?…that makes me feel so much better.

Wow I am honoured, my video from my gym makes it on MMT..on my Bday….damn the stars are aligning..maybe I will get laid this weekend!!!!!!!!!

On a serious note, he also taught is this last year and pressed on it again. He gave us some good clinch tips..especially for short guys like myself. And I will tell you, dont let him fool you when he says” I am retired fighter, dont hurt me” He is still solid and tough as an ox and fast. OUr Khru (KhanomRay) knows him well and we are very grateful that he flew out from san fran to tampa to spend the weekend with us.
On a personal note he is a great guy. I was honoured to have him at my house where we had an iron chef challenge. We are both foodies and we exchanged recipes instead of Mt techniques=).
By the end of the night after much sake Belgian Ale and whisky, you know he had fun when he says ” Students temporarily, friends forever”!=)
I cant wait for next years`s seminar

    Please upload more!!!
I always love seeing tips displayed online!!

Speaking of any of you have any good ones for keeping your eyes open?
    (that flinch is killing me!)

  7. djmattyd on March 20th, 2009 6:10 pm

Haha that’s great advice about the head kick. I am also flexibility challenged in a lot of ways. Its pretty hilarious watching me stretch when we do a the center splits. I basically just stand there.

    -Tiger

Two tips on keeping your eyes open. First one is to slightly squint your eyes and try to keep your head down and look at the person from the top of your field of vision.

The other tip is to just be relaxed and don’t worry about getting hit. Cause really that’s all flinching is, is a nervous reaction. So if you don’t care if you get hit you won’t flinch.

    Thanks for posting this Nop!!!
Once again, we had alot of fun w/ Num here in Tampa. He is a great friend of mine and the best MT trainer I’ve had yet! He’s very on point when it comes to knowing how to make me better as a fighter based on my personal strengths and flaws.
Last year he went over alot of technique. This year, as you can see by the sample, was mostly ring strategy. That which made him so successful in his fight carreer. All TMT students benefited tremendously from the seminar. We’ll be bringing him back next year or maybe even later on this year. I’ll keep everyone posted. If anyone is in the area, you should def drop by!

Jongsanan gave a seminar up in Canada a few months ago and I’m still mad that I had to work…. I would have loved to get some clinch tips from him.

tiger… an old method to train your eyes i have seen is to stand in water and chop and splash water in your open eyes with out blinking.

    Tiger-

One of the things our trainer Neungsiam would do is have us get into a defensive position/guard and have your trainer partner rattle off head shots 2′s and 3′s…

As djmattyd mentioned it’s just a natural reaction. When you’re in your shell keep your eyes open, get used to the feeling. You’ll see that it isn’t so bad, and eventually your brain will relax.

Num is actually probably the most articulate of all the Fairtex “Thai’s guys” in speaking English. His beer drinking skills are second to none!!

  14. padkeemaw on March 23rd, 2009 2:34 pm

I 2nd that Tong po, his beer drinking skills are comp style..his whisky swagging really dropped my jaw

i highly reccomend Siam no1 if you’re in Toronto

    Hi Guys,

Just wanted to say hi, im new to the site and muay thai in general I am a student at Fairtex SF.. and just wanted to comment that Jongsanan is really a cool guy for being a true legend of the sport as pointed out. He took the time out the other day while I was stretching to ask me how I like the class (my fifth class so far) and I asked him about my kicking and he mentioned it will just come with time etc..
Side note: All the instructors (is that the correct term for Thai training?) are good here and the students are awesome as well no attitudes just a bunch of hard trainers. So hi guys hope to contribute more in the future.

    Mac
