Travel Advisory for Nak Muays

October 16, 2008 by nopstar

I’ve made brief mention of this in the past, but things have kicked off in a bad way.  If you’ve been anywhere near a paper or the tv, you would have seen that a few protesters were killed last Tuesday.

I spoke with my buddy who’s a newscaster and he says there is a lot of shit going down that isn’t being “covered” in the news.  I normally stick to Muay Thai… but I’m writing this because I know a lot of you are planning on heading out to Thailand.

My friends advice is to steer well clear of the protest area (Govt. House, parliament etc.)  And most importantly stay out of large crowds.  He advises that if you see a large crowd forming get into a cab and get out of there.  Seriously it isn’t worth it.

A lot of the action is happening from an area not too far from Rajadomnern Stadium.  Please use your judgement.

Be safe….

I’m going to Chiang Mai. I don’t think that there’s anything bad going on in that area.

I was going to hang out in Bangkok for Loi Krathong…but I’m not in the mood for politics right now.

    Thanks for the heads up.

Hey Nop, any insight of whats going on in Tailand is well apreciated. I think any nak muay has grown interest about the country!

How about the conflict with Cambodya? I hear the situation is pretty fucked up right now. An strategy to quit the people’s presure from the government thing?

    Hey all,
I got back from thailand 4 days ago(also went over to cambodia) no problems anywhere including rayadomnern stadium, went there one night, there is plenty of security around but you’ll be fine.

Yeah, this whole deal is pretty messed up, but hopefully it will bring around some good change. One of the problems with this kind of news report is that they don’t give you a sense of scale, it kinda makes it seem like the problem is throughout the city. I hate it when propaganda messes with the tourism here, it really hurts the economy.

As diver stated the chance of you running into trouble is pretty slim, and as nopstar pointed out avoid big groups.

If ur sensible and show common sense, then Thailand is really safe, but if you look for trouble, then you’ll find it and a lot, lot more.

Hmmmm. I’m planning on heading to Thailand for a month with my wife and kids over the christmas period. Wanted to book the tickets next week. I’ll be honest and say this has put it in jeopardy. :(

My boyfriend & I are headed to Thailand the last week in Jan, and will be staying there all of Feb… It’s going to be the first time either of us have been out of the states. I’m nervous already and this is adding to it. I don’t plan on leaving the school much but i do want to see some of the beautiful sites Thailand has to offer! Anyone with any advice, please feel free to give it to me! haha any advice is greatly appreciated!

    @ladynakmuay

Seriously don’t sweat it that much! Thailand is still really safe, the trouble that you’ve seen and heard about are pretty isolated occurrences. I have lots of friends living in BKK who haven’t noticed any real change in day to day life.

The advice given above is really to remind ‘thrill seekers’ not to go looking for trouble. Don’t let it put you off your visit, or change your plans. You should definitely get out and about when ur here, it’d be such a waste of a holiday if u didn’t!

Thank you for your response! We’re still going no matter what, I can’t wait – i’ve never been so excited! Anything specific we should try to see in BKK while there? I have a whole list of sites & temples to visit! We’re training at Por Pramuk the majority of the trip, then back to BKK for some relaxation & site seeing for a few days before we leave!
