Thai Ink

March 30, 2008 by nopstar

I’ve done a few post on Thai Sak Yant in the past. If you’ve never seen a Sak Yant, it’s a traditional/mystical Thai temple tattoo. The symbols and iconography are traditional Thai, Brahmin, and Khmer. Adherents believe the symbols are sacred and imbued with power.

This looks like a clip that didn’t make it into the show. Oh yeah, no little electric needle here. This almost looks as painful as the traditional Maori hand tool tattoos. It’s amazing to see these Nak Muay’s who already have a high threshold for pain, grit and wince in pain.

I’ve got a tat in the middle of my back, I remember it being painful but this looks too hardcore for me.

I know it’s a language issue with Dhzabar, but he’s really beginning to rub me the wrong way. I suspect he won’t be on the show too much longer though.

Holy crap. No wonder. I thought I was seeing things when watching Ep 11. Everyone seemed to have more tattoos than I remembered. The tattoo artist has serious skills though.

    “I want one more”… LOL

Anyway, I didn’t notice them mentioning anything about tats in either Ep 10 or 11. Or did I just miss it?

  2. Horc on March 31st, 2008 3:36 am

Hmm I’m just wondering. What was it about Dhzabar that rubs you the wrong way?

I mean there’s nothing about him that I don’t really like but then there’s nothing about him that makes me dislike him either

  3. Shadyeskimo on March 31st, 2008 3:36 am

Nop why is Dzhabar getting on your nerves(just curious) I have two normal Tattos and im over it. No more and I am happy with the ones i have, Two small ones on my Forearm and Shoulder, Very Normal.

i’m also thinking of getting a muay-thai inspired tattoo and i’d love to see/hear about any tattoos people have gotten.

i’ve only been training for 2.5 years, do you guys think that is too short of a time to get ink, already?

  5. nopstar on March 31st, 2008 7:12 am

    Horc & Shadyeskimo-

I think it started in the Episode where he fought. I know it’s a lot of factors, Cultural, Age and Language. He got really pissed (overly in my opinion) about the whole hand shake thing.

Then in the episode when JWP is out with the pox, he says something to the effect that he’s glad JWP’s out. Fine, totally entitled to his opinion, I wouldn’t have said it even if I would have felt that way.

Now this tat episode he says he doesn’t support the fighters getting tats. That’s just a language thing… he’s just saying he’s not down. Fine, I don’t dislike him but he rubs me the wrong way.

  6. Suli on March 31st, 2008 9:08 am

I think he has a hard time saying what he really feels. And him not supporting tats might be because he is a muslim and in Islam tats are are not allowed because the ink is considered dirty. Or basically when you get a tat you can not wash up for prayer.

And whole hand shake thing i dont know if that happend to me i would have been pissed of also. But thats just me.

  7. Shadyeskimo on March 31st, 2008 9:24 am

I agree with his temper being a little to unharnished(spelling?) And I agree with the language difficulties, he has a hard time speaking english and therefore he cant precisely say what truely is on his mind(As Nopstar writes) But I must say I really like his personality and his heart. About the JWP comment I didnt really think about it, guess they all want the Glory and Money BAD.

  8. Tong Po on March 31st, 2008 9:28 am

Maybe you are jealous of his good looks, Nop…

That tattooing looks painful as hell!! Looking at all these guys’ expression showed it all.

  9. Suli on March 31st, 2008 10:45 am

    is it 150,000
    or 250.00

i mean that a shit load of money…

I’m certainly not a big fan of Dzhabar, but I don’t hate the guy. But I do kind of agree with him on tats. Skin is more beautiful than any tattoo. Granted, there are some sweet ones out there, but most are pretty lame.

  11. GregH on March 31st, 2008 5:05 pm

“Skin is more beautiful than any tattoo. Granted, there are some sweet ones out there, but most are pretty lame.”

I’ve been thinking of getting a tattoo for years, but I don’t want to get something lame and meaningless, so I haven’t gotten one. I’m 25. Soon I’ll be too old to get one.

I don’t dislike Dhzabar except for his lame fight with Raffik. It was at least as much his fault as it was Raffik’s. Aside from that he seems ok. When he “won” against David (?), he acknowledged that he wasn’t happy about the fight.

  12. Ray on March 31st, 2008 6:37 pm

I think anyone should get a tattoo when they feel its right. No sense in waiting until someone else tells you when its ok to put something on your body. A tattoo is a very personal thing.

  13. Benny on March 31st, 2008 8:14 pm

I’m looking to get some Thai style work done, does anyone know where’s some Thai type tattoos or pictures online? I’ve had a hard time finding any. And no, I don’t want the kind they get in the clip holy shit that must sting.

  14. fight geek on March 31st, 2008 8:29 pm

I think Jabbah is the funniest dude on the show. He’s Borat with a ‘tude.

  15. nopstar on March 31st, 2008 10:41 pm

    Benny-

The style is called Sak Yant, check out Sakyant.com or just google it.

Totally agree with Ray, it’s partly about the moment. I’ve got one, and I don’t regret it. My design is personal and has meaning. I would give it some real thought, as opposed to walking into the parlor and pointing at something on the wall.

  16. grake on April 1st, 2008 1:42 am

Yeah… anything you dislike about Jabba. Juz tell him straight. I think he is in thailand now. Dun sniff around someone back.

  17. nopstar on April 1st, 2008 2:21 am

    Grake

So what are you suggesting? I phone up Jabba and say your kind of getting on my nerves?

  18. Shadyeskimo on April 1st, 2008 6:30 am

    Grake
We dont know the Guy and he is on a TV show, why should anyone call a stranger up and tell him that what he is doing on TV is annoying? And where would they get the Number?? And I agree with Benny n´Nop, Do it cause you feel it, and want it yourself.

  19. TwoThumbs on April 1st, 2008 9:31 am

hey all, my two cents here …
I say give jabba and everyone on the show benefit of the doubt, cos it is a reality TV show end of the day. the guys don’t control how the show been edited … plus I think they are interviewed TONS, like hours of interview footage. They may interview for 1 hr but end up mostly on the cutting floor. Maybe we see only 3 mins of that interview? … the best soundbites to build whatever story angle for that week’s show.
Also, I won’t be surprised if maybe the interviewers prompt the fighters with questions? I can imagine them being asked: So what do u think about JWP being sick? Are you happy? what does it mean for you going into the next round, etc etc. Just my ramblings. :-)

  20. YiP on April 1st, 2008 1:40 pm

I think its a middle eastern tradition to not get tattoos. i know for jewish people, you can’t be buried with a tattoo, but i’m not sure if muslims think the same way.

either way, i’m sure half of what he says is edited, and or, he is just super blunt.

  21. TwoThumbs on April 1st, 2008 4:39 pm

like suli says above, i too have heard tattoos are not allowed for muslims.

  22. Horc on April 1st, 2008 5:45 pm

Well most religions have their Do’s and Don’ts but I’m sure we all know that not everyone follows strictly to them.

Many people have the impression that all muslims are all uptight and one-track minded but in truth most of them are.

Just like how there are those holier-than-thou christians although most christians are fine people who don’t get up your ass with their religious regulations.

  23. Horc on April 1st, 2008 5:46 pm

    *CORRECTION*

Many people have the impression that all muslims are all uptight and one-track minded but in truth most of them AREN’T.

    Terrible mistake there…

  24. Benny on April 1st, 2008 6:22 pm

isn’t this a muay thai forum…? anyway from my research it seems like you could be called lame by a Thai if you have Sak Yant (thanks nop) that you get somewhere other than a temple in Thailand… I guess i’m stuck with skulls and crosses lol. Anyone have any Thai tats that they got elsewhere? If so, did you take any shit in Thailand if you’ve been? nobody wants to be a poser.

  25. GregH on April 1st, 2008 7:10 pm

Benny, it’s called “My Muay Thai: The Rants and Ramblings of a Muay Thai Fan” so I guess people can talk about things directly related, indirectly related or totally unrelated to Muay Thai. This is one of those things that are between “indirectly related” and “totally unrelated”, I guess.

Anyway, you’re right, nobody wants to be a poser. And the only way to avoid being a poser is to get a tattoo that has lasting personal meaning to you. That’s why I am not particularly impressed with skull, thorn, tribal, etc tattoos (no offense to any of you who have them. maybe they have significance to you, but not to me. or maybe they just look cool, which is fine too).

  26. Chris on April 1st, 2008 9:33 pm

    Grake, you are a douche.

  27. Big T on April 1st, 2008 11:55 pm

My wifes(shes thai) uncle, whos been a monk for over 50 years now, does sak yant on mostly ladies tongues with an invisible ink, so that they would only speak good. Yikes imagine the pain!!! Im not buddhist mut my wife is very much, and i love it as form of art and tradition, so i have arranged to have one done for me next month when i go back to my (spiritual) home:D

  28. grake on April 3rd, 2008 6:38 am

Btw nopstar… Think I misuse my words a little hope you dun get offerened by it. If you happen to drop by http://contenderasiafans.com/content/contenders, just drop me a msg. Under grake… Think it is a misunderstanding.

JWP and the other contender fighters are on the forum too. If you have any think you wanna know about the contender just msg the forum guys. Btw hope it is not sort of an adverstiment and sort.

A fren of mine is a pretty close fren of Jabba. So I’m just speaking up for him. Think it is a misunderstand.

  29. Suli on April 3rd, 2008 11:07 am
