Saiyok Pumpanmuang vs Ibrahima Njie Jarra

First fight was over in less than a minuite. After a brief exchange Saiyok cuts Ibrahima with an elbow. There is a little bit of blood coming out of the cut and the referee stops the bout. The Thai announcers were confused and mentioned how the cut was so small that the fight should have kept going.  Stopped way too early. Saiyok wins by referee stoppage.

Sudsakorn SorKlinmee VS Abdalah Mabel

plays around with Abdalah the first round. He throws him down a few times off of Abdalahs kicks. Early in the second round Abdalah manages to toss to the ground from the clinch position with a technique similar to the latest Muay Thai Minuite video. comes back strong. He misses a spinning elbow, but lands many shots and teeps Abdalah off his feet. He continues to show dominance all through the fight.  Abdallah is outclassed by who wins on points.

Yodsanklai Fairtex VS Jose Barradas

In round 1 a right body hook attempt by southpaw Jose Barradas lands in Yod’s groin. He exits the ring to rearrange the twig and berries. He comes back and turn on the fire. Punishing Jose the entire fight. Yod lands solid punches and low kicks. Yod has an amazing left cross, right hook, left low kick combo. In the third round a Jose tries a desperate attempt at a spinning kick but then finds himself on the canvas. Yodsanklai wins on points.

Buakaw PorPramuk VS Djime Coulibaly

Early in the opening round they engage in the clinch, and stalls. I think he may have been thinking he is in a K-1 fight. He quickly realizes he can knee and proceeds to do so. In the second round Djime lands a nice little combo but then can’t seem to stay on his feet. toys with him by repeatedly tossing Djime to the floor.   wins on points.

Fabio Pinca VS Yamato Yuya

This fight was a total upset.  Yamato elbows Fabio early in the first round. The cut seems fine with no blood coming out. Then in the second round we see some blood. Referee calls a time out, sends Yamato to the neutral corner and sends Fabio to his corner to have his cut looked at. Fabios corner is slapping on the vaseline and a few seconds later the referee waves and calls the fight off. There is a huge “WHAT THE FUCK?” look on Fabios face. He leaves the ring. Yamato wins by referee stoppage.

Petasuwin VS Sofiane

In the first round they both exchange. Petasuwin come out strong in the second and pounds Sofiane with repeated knees. Few more knees in the third round as well. Petasuwin keeps moving forward and attacking. He takes the win at the end of the third by points.

Komata Hiroki VS Mohamed Diaby

Mohamed comes out strong in the first and lands some heavy punches. Mohamed is tall and lankey and also weighed in at 74kg. I thought this was a 70kg tournament…

Yamamoto VS Ibrahim

First round goes back and forth between the two. Ibrahim turns up the heat in the second round and dominates Yamamoto. In the third round Ibrahim is determined to win and keeps the pressure on Yamamoto. He lands an array of solid punches. Ibrahim takes the win on points.

After seeing last years Thai Fight event and what a big production it was, this year seemed a little more low rent.  The production on TV wasn’t as good as before, and also it didn’t seem like there were a lot of people there to watch the fights live.  I don’t know what was going on with the referees but even the announcers seemed bothered by the fact that they would stop the fights so early. The event was held in Cannes France.  It will be interesting to see the semi finals which will be held July 17th in Hong Kong.  Hopefully the fights will be a little more exciting.

About Alex

Born and raised in Southern California and now live in Thailand. I started training Muay Thai in the States at the age of 18. After my first trip to Thailand I fell in love with the sport and the “sabai, sabai” lifestyle of Thailand. I finally got tired of the 9-5 rat race life in Los Angeles, and thought it is time to re-evaluate my life. At the age of 25 I sold most of my belongings and bought my plane ticket to Thailand. I’m grateful for the things I have accomplished so far and always looking forward to what’s next.

  2. At first i was on the fence about the newer european/dutch boxing-centric style of Muay Thai vs. Traditional Thai ring style, but now i’m convinced without a doubt that the Thai way of fighting and training is superior.

    • if you ever doubted muay thai[or traditional style(theres only one style and its muay thai) as you call it] you could never be a true nak muay.

  3. I was hoping for the vids! Thanks, Alex and krysteN.

    • the vid links are up on the k1fans site.

sudsakorns reaction to abdalahs attempted hand stand kick that saenchai always uses was priceless.

  4. This show was a joke. All total mismatches, terrible reffereeing. What the hell was going on in pinca’s fight. That stoppage was a joke. This kind of thing does not advance muay thai in the west.We still as far away from any kind of main stream acceptance as it ever was.

  5. Yes, I agree with the stoppages. Are the cuts being looked at more harshly these days? I remember seeing fights with blood gushing out of heads like waterfalls.

    • They try to promote Muay Thai in a different way to attract new audience, maybe the early stoppage was because of this.
