Somrak Tsunami Event

November 26, 2008 by nopstar · 11 Comments

Another slow news day… anyway I was watching this the other day, despite being a few years old it’s still worth sharing.  As always many thanks to our community member bsfbkhdj for uploading and sharing these clips.

I would have actually liked to have seen Somrak in his prime.  I know Somrak is the shit, but just once I’d like to see him fight someone who seems up to the tasks.  I know that’s a ridiculous statement, but I’ve never seen him fight someone who’s on the level.  I know Keddle is a good nak muay but I’m looking for someone a whole step better. Muay Thai Legends Fight Results

August 18, 2008 by nopstar · 9 Comments

Fight results this past weekend… So first things first, I should always bring my small video camera as a back up.  I bought a new camera, which was promptly spotted as I went through security.  So no footage… they’ll have official footage of the event at shoutfight.com

Anyway it was my first fight event in the UK, it was a pretty good turn out.  I’d have to say one of the aspects that was notably different to fights in the states was the fighters entrance music.  In the States the ring music is this projection of toughness.  I think MMA has done a lot to perpetuate this… Read more

Somrak Khamsing – Mae Muay Thai

February 9, 2007 by nopstar · 4 Comments

Last week I posted a clip of a deleted scene from Jet Li’s Fearless. In Jet Li agrees to take a beating on behalf of the kid. If you haven’t seen it you should. The dubbing is so bad, you want the kid to get beat even more. Anyway, many of you pointed out that the Guy Jet Li is fighting in none other then Somrak Khamsing. Somrak is the first Thai to win gold at the Olympics (’96). Since then He’s done a couple B movies and has attempted to launch his singing career.

I found one of his fights from a couple years back. Props to Kevin1813 for uploading this. He’s fighting a Canadian Fighter Jowan. Somrak goes straight Muay Boran, Mae Mai Muay Thai on his ass. You’ll see by the way he moves, switching his stance… he’s demonstrating “old muay” He throws some fairly rare techniques… Jarake Fad Hang “Crocodile Tail whip” (spinning back kick), Hak Nuang Aiyara “Breaking the Elephants Trunk” (an elbow smash to the thigh) and Kwang Sabad Nah “Dear shakes it’s head” (Inverted elbow smash) etc. This is probably the closest will come to seeing old style Muay in a professional bout. After seeing these Muay Boran techniques you can see where Anderson Silva draws his inspiration.

I think even back then Somrak was gunning for the lead role in the Nai Khanomtom movie.
