Suksan Pi Mai! (Happy New Years)

April 9, 2009 by nopstar

I can’t believe it’s Sonkran already!?  Where has my life gone?  For those of you who don’t know it’s Thai new years.  If you’re in Thailand right now, you’re probably wondering why Bangkok is a ghost town.   That’s because everyone has gone home for the holidays.

Sonkran typical falls on the hottest day of the year, but don’t worry the way you celebrate and participate in sonkran is to douse people in water.  So if you walking along don’t be surprised if you get a bucket of water on your head.  Actually considering it’s 35/95 degrees out you’ll probably be pretty psyched.

For those living in the states, check your local Thai restaurant, I know most major cities will be holding celebrations at a park or temple somewhere.  There good fun, lots of great food.

I know LA held their Sonkran last weekend (sorry) but most should be held this upcoming weekend.  Just do a quick search in your area, well worth the trip.

Oh man, I remember Songkran in Chiang Mai. The craziest 5 days ever! Ac city wide water fight qualifies as the best holiday ever.

There’s a local Thai restaurant by where I live in Southern California, maybe I’ll go there tonight. It’s delicious. I hope I don’t get hit with a bucket of water, it’s pretty cold right now. Brr.

Happy New Year! I’d break out the water pistols, but it’s 7 degrees celsius here in good ol’ Vancouver.

Maybe a nice Thai lunch or dinner though.
