Spong vs. Carnage
July 2, 2009 by nopstar

I hadn’t really put forth much effort promoting this years Champions of Champions line up. Last year I did a lot of promotion of the event and in the end I felt like I got burned pretty bad.
I wasn’t confident that they were going to be able to pull off another web ppv. I respect Clifton and I’m down with supporting our sport, but I’m not going to recommend for you guys to plunk down your cash only to get burned. Based on the chatter on the forums and even on our site, I’ve gathered that once again there were some snafus.
I hope for those of you who paid, you get taken care off. I know I never received any of my cash back from last year’s event. To Reidy27 where the effe are you? You’ve got a lot of balls calling me out… you should be on here doing some damage control… it’s time for you to walk the walk. Props to b-manfor sending me a long this clip and thaibox123 for the upload.
Anyway, one of the most anticipated fights of the evening was the Spong vs. Corbett fight. I haven’t been able to find footage of the entire fight, only the last bit of it. I’m not sure if this is where the PPV cut off.
Here is a link to the last part of the fight. The site is pretty slow but this is what we’ve got to work with. This is what I was able to gather from reading about the fight… feel free to chime in (Sudan)
• In the early rounds Spongs drops Carnage with flying knee but it’s ruled a slip.
• Carnage Ko’s Spong with right hook, Spong gets a long count and gets to his feet
• The ref is assessing Spongs condition, Spong insists he can continue…
• Ref is in the process of calling it, Carnage thinks it’s on and pounces on the situation and KO’s spong again.
• The fight is rules a No Contest because Spong is injured?
Does anyone know anymore?

Not much to add here except you’re right Nop. And if I never adequately expressed it let me do so now. This site is good for Muay Thai and so are you. So thanks for the love and hard work Nop-dog.
From what we saw, Nathan did make an err in judgement..one can argue it was adrenaline, others may say that a Pro fighter should have better ring awareness. I can`t place blame..it was an incident…and not intentional..or so it seemed. Anyhhow at the end he apologized and they showed sportmanship…and that`s why I love this sport. In a UFC card you may have seen an octagon brawl like old WWF days=)
Tale of the taPE..nathan knocked him the f out..no matter the decision at the end…he met in battle and got Koed..before all this drama occurred.
And yes where is seedy Reidy!!..His past behaviour was quite disrespectful..How big are your balls now?
From what I saw, Spong dropped him early but from my position I didn’t see with what. I do believe it was a knee and I think that it was ruled a KO.
In the 3rd round carnage clearly KO’s Spong. Spong barely gets up after the count, he was clearly out on his feet. The ref waves it off (fight over) but carnage did not see that (ref had his back to carnage), next thing I know carnage bounces on Spong.
After the fight, carnage said that he did not see the ref wave the fight off. I saw the ref end the fight. My first thought was that there was some politics involved, I don’t know how carnage did not see that the ref ended the fight.
I would love to see a rematch.
New spong v carnage video up. Props to B-man for sending it along.
Thanks for the sentiments stack.
hey thanks nop and thaibox123!! (note: thaibox123 actually has the last round up now as well…) have been looking to see this fight in its entirety. couple of points:
1. the knee spong landed in the second in which carnage fell down was definitely a slip.
2. carnage looked very nervous rounds 1 and 2 (not judging him, i would be, too).
3. was a right hand counter to chin that dropped carnage in 2.
4. carnage got his nerve up in round 3 and got busy. nice change of tactics, and very impressive for him to be able to fight from the other side and land such a picture perfect hook counter to the chin (if you notice, he tried to pull the same counter from his orthodox stance earlier in the fight but missed).
5. after seeing the whole fight, carnage really ko’d him, but he definitely deserves that disqualification 100%. you could see it already when he’d knocked spong down and was hovering over him while the ref was telling him to go to the neutral corner. his mind was gone already. it was a long time between when spong got up and the ref called it off (even though he should have not backed out the way he did) and carnage knew the deal. he was just being a dick, to be honest. there is no room in the sport for that. he is a great fighter, but he tried to make a point and it backfired on him. so no title for him.
6. great sportsmanship after the fight from both fighters. carnage came back to his senses and acted like the gentleman he usually is and it was a nice end to the whole thing.
7. castagnini, as the apologist for the whole situation, was wrong for what he said. he is a good and knowledgeable commentator, but carnage’s actions were indefensible. the bias was overwhelming.
shit wouldnt have happened if they kept the thai ref in there. the tall skinny commentator, not the corny fatfuck, is a fucking idiot.
this needs a rematch more than any other fight right now
Look at the fight closely, it was very emotional fight for both. A lot of hype and big expectations from both fighters.
Now watch the part, especially the replay of when the referee waves off the fight, he turns to the side as to make way for both fighters to continue fighting – that was the mistake. Carnage, like any fighter who wants to finish a fight is obviously going to rush a fighter after he’s been downed and try to capitalize on the first knock down. He simply misread the referee’s movements – the ref moved the side and spread his arms out (wanting to wave off the fight) but any of us in Carnage’s place would easily read that as a ‘fight-on’ gesture, especially the way the ref turn away as to let Carnage at him again…
Check out 8:16 during the recap in the 2nd video clip.

Bullshit results, Spong was not injured, he was KTFO!
I just finished watching the Spong vs Carnage fight. My question is WTF was carnage thinking?
I can not recall ever seeing a ref waving off a fighter while backpeddling away at an angle. Usually the ref is right in the fighters face and mant times making body contact. Corbett was not right and the ref was just plain bad.
GorillaPalmz – I agree with almost everything you said. I don’t think he was intentionally being a dick, I think he got caught up with the moment. It’s the biggest fight of his career, he’s anxious, he knocked down his opponent, he wanted to finish it……….
It was weird seeing the ref walk away from Spong as he was waving the fight off. Like southshot said, most ref’s would be in front of the fighter, waving the fight off……I’m not defending Carnage but I could understand where he’s coming from.
I don’t think that Carnage meant anything by it, I honestly could see how he was mistaken. If anything, the ref should ref should be fined. Why were his hands so low? That’s absolutely ridiculous, I’ve never seen a ref’s hands that low when he calls off a fight. Carnage should be awarded the win, but possibly fined or suspended. This happened after Spong was knocked out, regardless of what happened after the fight. In my book, Carnage won, fair and square.
I really don’t think that the ref’s hands were that low. I saw him wave it off at the fight and on the video. The ref should have kept an eye on carnage but he did send him to the corner. Carnage is a pro right? He doesn’t look like a dirty fighter but perhaps he was trying to send a message. I just don’t see how he could’ve miss that. The crowd saw it and we weren’t in the ring… Who knows…
Whatever the outcome, tis was a great fight. Its been a long while since anyone could take the fight to the Carnage, let alone knocked him down. Despite losing, Tyrone showed that Nathan a thing or two….
Can’t wait for the rematch…. it would be the stuff of legends!
It looks like an honest mistake in the replay. The ref moved out of the way and he pounced, not even looking at the ref or waiting for the ref to tell them to engage. Over-eager but not malicious. Still a mistake though.
it could have not been a mistake. either way it was awesome.
