Sign the Contender Asia Petition

August 24th, 2007 · 10 Comments

Hey guys I just got an email from the guys at the Black Thaiger Muay Thai Academy. They’ve showed some initiative and have started a Petition to Get “The Contender Asia” televised in the states, well done.

I’ve checked out the site and read over their terms of service. Everything looks legit, they also have a box you can check to not display your name.

It literally takes 15 seconds to fill this thing out. I’m not sure if a thousand signatures will be enough to pique the interests of Mark Burnett, but you’ve got to start somewhere and every little step counts.

I don’t know about you but I would love to see The Contender Asia here in the States, It would really elevate the profile of Muay Thai in the States. My Muay Thai has got to be good for at least 100 hundred signatures… Come on guys.

Click here to sign The Contender Asia Petition.

Thanks,

Nopstar

Done……I’ll forward it to all my friends as soon as I get a chance…..I doubt 1,000 votes will be enough….we should try and aim much higher than that it shouldn’t be too hard.

No offense but I am very leary of Mark Burnett. I want to see Muay Thai displayed honestly and not with the canned sound effects and editted fights that ruined a decent premise in the international boxing version of the Contender. And let’s not forget artificial drama.

Also, these guys have a lot of Champions and former champions to be considered Contenders. I am still on the fence as I consider positives versus the negatives it could have on Muay Thai in the USA.

Any reality show has its drawbacks. There is always some editing/scripting done to create drama and appeal to a mass audience. That’s the core process of creating television entertainment.

I think what is important, and was true with “The Contender”, is that the dedication of the fighters and the sport itself needs to be portrayed with respect and honor. As long as that takes place I believe the impact on Muay Thai in the USA will be fully positive.

And for those of you asking for a higher signature count, thanks but I’m still struggling to get past 100. It doesn’t happen overnight.

Nopadon thanks again for your help.

The difference to me was that Contender was about struggling fighters who felt they never got a decent shot at getting ranked and hence bigger marquee fights. It was the core premise of the Contender. Some of these fighters at this level really don’t have the problem being unranked.

While I agree 100% with your sentiments and do want Muay Thai to get more exposure in the USA and for the reasons you and I agree on the possible drawbacks give me pause.

Here’s another point to consider the western boxing version of The Contender wasn’t exactly a smash hit. It got yanked from NBC for poor ratings and wound up on ESPN where it too languished after some false starts. Burnett has no idea how to produce a show about a fight sport and it shows. But you never can tell, may be the Thai produced version could be done better.
