Saensak Muangsurin Passes Away

April 17, 2009 by nopstar

Saensak Muangsurin whose real name was Boonsong Mansri died from intestinal issues yesterday.  Saensak who was champion Nak Muay went on to box in the WBC.  He still holds the record for the least amount of time it’s taken anyone to become a WBC champion.   Muangsurin did it in 3 professional fights.

“Saensak took the boxing world by storm when he won the WBC light-welterweight title in 1975. He scored an eighth-round technical knockout win over champion Perico Fernandez of Spain at the Indoor Stadium in Hua Mark.”

It says in the Bangkok Post, towards the end Muangsurin struggled with money issues.  He was left blind in one eye, and survived on a modest pension from the The  Sports Authority of Thailand  (7,000 baht) and the WBC ($200).  He was 58 years old.  May he find happiness in his next life.

Genuinely sad to read about Saensak passing. I loved watching his rematch against Velazquez. Nice of you to remember him Nop.

Today, the most important newspaper of Barcelona “La Vanguardia” dedicated a whole page to him.

RIP. I used to love watching him fight. He came out of the same muangsurin camp that produced Coban.
