Rolling it out

September 2nd, 2008 · 8 Comments

I can across this vid via fightgeek.  I bought my roller about 5 years ago, my ex girlfriend was a pilates instructor and made me get one.  I thought  $40 was pretty damn expensive for a foam cylinder…  maybe one of the best $40 investments I’ve ever made.  I just check on amazon… you can get one for $15.

If you train, and you train hard this really is a must have piece of kit.  Massages are nice, but most of us can’t afford to get a leg’s rubbed out everyday.  The roller can be excruciatingly pleasurable!  If any of  you are fortunate enough to be conditioned by Mark Mian, ask him to bust out Darth Vader (4″ roller), it will test your threshold for pain.  I would recommend getting a 6″ diameter…4″ if your a masochist.  They also make really hard one’s…  whatever your into I guess.

I try to roll my legs out after each training session.  I’ve tried the tennis balls on my calves and it’s excruciating.  It’s amazing how knotted up Nak Muay’s can get especially on the lower part of your calves and the bottom of your feet.  You’ll know instantly if your jacked up because it will be tender when you roll it out.

A nice little tip, that Mark showed me was when you come to a spot that is tight or notty, roll across that spot and hold an even amount of pressure on it, about 30 seconds. If you repeat that a couple of times, you can usually get the knot to release.

I can’t recommend to you enough, if you train… you should really have one of these.  If you don’t have the loot get your gym to by one.  OK no more chit chat, I’m gonna roll my tensor/slash hip joint… late!

    Chok Dee-

Next time you have lactic acid built up in your legs after a long run or training, take you knuckles and knead/slide them down you thigh, (downward) motion. A foam roller is like that only using your body weight for pressure.

I should mention though, you have to know how to use one to get it’s maximum benefit.

hi guys, you can download this free Ebook to learn more about Self Myofascial Release(SMFR) Massage. In a matter of fact, u can even use tennis ball to massage.
Definitely helps in the long run to unknot some “hidden” tight muscles. :)

Yeah I love them, although I admit to not using it enough. I tend to only use it if my normal stretch routine isn’t cutting it. They’re definitely worth their weight in gold if you’ve been doing a bunch of sparring and have taken lots of cut kicks lately(!).

I have one of these. A smaller one for only $10 bucks. Its really useful (I actually need to use it more than the once a month that I do). The only thing I don’t like is that a foam roller may lose its shape after a while, so I recommend getting a harder material such as plastic.
