Photo Finish

July 2, 2007 by nopstar

I’m sure you’ve seen horse racing use the photo finish when a race is too close to call. I think K-1 needs to implement a post fight photo… so we can see how much damage a fighter sustained. (Joking) You’ll see what I’m talking about in a moment.

There has been a lot of back and forth on who really won the Zambidis, Drago fight. I’ve said it before, it’s a good thing I’m not one of the judges. I realize the judges don’t get the benefit of reviewing the fight. I’ve watched the fight about 4 times now, and I’m become less and less sure on who should have won. I see Zambidis being really active, landing some crisp shots… despite it being very one dimensional.

I see Drago, utilizing more weapons, with a variety of attacks. He may not be landing as many clean blows though… It’s a tough one. I realize the judges don’t get the benefit of reviewing the fight.

The other day our Spartan brother Stam shared a picture from Drago’s site. After seeing this, I’m now definitely leaning towards Drago as the winner. Damn, my man Zambo is busted up…

What do you think?

Also note that Zambidi uses a lot of body shots which usually are less visible than face/head blows. I agree that Drago used a lot of weapons, but also I didn’t see anthing that landed quite cleanly or even hurt Zambidi. The fight was close enought by the 3rd round to warrant an extra round- an the extra round was close too, but Zam seems hard punches probably swayed the judeges. He was pretty relentless with them and kept throwing even after getting kicked and hit.

Zam does really have that Iron Mike style- at least with punching anyway. Note the bodyshots then moves upstairs for the headshot. I’m a fan of this little guy’s power and speed- however, I don’t see him getting passed Masato- let alone Buakaw.

Masato , a question mark. Bauakaw, not going to happened. He’s too small for Buakaw. I’m not saying he cant fight because he is small ( he’s knocked out taller people his entire career), I’m just saying he cant fight BUAKAW because he is small.

I know Zam landed the body shots but those did very little to Drago.
I think its clear Drago took it.
Also, most of the videos I saw online, the quality is such that you cant make out how extensize the damage was to Zams face. When I watched it on TV here in Tokyo, it was clear. Also, it was clear he was hurting.

This is what Drago had to say:

“Dear fans, I just got back from Japan. The event was great, but not for me. I lost my fight. From the first bell I closed into a shell and didn’t listen to my corner at all. I had a lot of respect for Mike Zambidis, maybe “too much”. I didn’t want to go KO against “Iron Mike” Looking back on the fight, I’d like to offer my apologies to my fans, trainer, coach and sponsors. I’ve learned a lot from this.:

Check under “Last Fight” on his homepage (gagodrago.com) for the original text in Dutch.

Thats a pretty cool way of saying “I didnt even do my best and I beat him up”

Actually, it could a pretty cool way of saying. I apologize to my fans for losing this fight because I didn’t give it my all. He apologizes to his judges, his sponsors etc. His comments could be interpreted in many different ways, so let’s not put words in the man’s mouth unless of course you have read somewhere that he actually said “I didnt even do my best and I beat him up” but somehow, I doubt it….lol. BUAKAW all the way!!!!!

I think it was clear that he thought he did well, but in retrospect, realized he probably could have knocked Zam out.
I think his statement says that without saying it.
