One week till MAX
June 21, 2007 by nopstar
We’ve got a week until MAX, and I was looking over the line up. I was curious about some of the competition, there are a few fighters who I’m not really that familiar with. I don’t know about you guys but I’m really looking forward to watching Buakaw and Holzken. I don’t know jack about Nicky Holzken.
I did a small amount of digging and this is what I found. As always, if I’ve left something out or you actually know what your talking about… please don’t hesistate to contribute. Holzken is a Dutch fighter and trains with Muay Thai legend Ramon Dekkers. It says on Golden Glory’s site that he’s 35-5 with 19 KO’s. He’s a Dutch, European, and K-1 Sweden Champion.
Holzken is 183 cm or 6 ft. tall, and is built a lot like Sato. I like to think the primary difference is that Holzken looks to be far more competent with hands then Sato. The combination of his knockout power and reach advantage should make him an interesting opponent. He also likes to work the leg kicks… which honestly, I don’t think will be all that effective on the champ.
Here’s his latest bout with Jan Van Denderen, The Benelux champ. Many thanks as always to Kevin1813 for the upload.
The odds are 10/1 against him… shit he’s got a punchers chance. Don’t you think 10/1 is a bit harsh? At any rate I’m looking forward to the match. What are you thoughts? Predictions?

I’d would to see nicky win, but my odds slighty shift to buakaw. Just because buakaw always tend to play his own game, and win on points if he has to. If he’s going head-on he will be playing a risky game. This guy isn’t going to be K.O’ed. Not on kicks, not on punches.
Fti, the video against jan is by far the best ‘ive seen of him.
This guy looks good but then again everyone does, that is until they’re inthe ring with Buakaw.
Its either jan is one tough dude to withstand all that punishment or Nicky isnt that strong. What do you think? Oh, I agree with post, those leg kicks wont work with Buakaw.
I think buakaw’s kick will punish holzken. Holzken rarely checks van’s low kick and van’s kick is way slower than buakaw. I don’t see holzken beating buakaw.
Buakaw all the way. Holzken seems good but IMO I don’t think he’s World Max level yet. Looking at the roster, it’s not hard to see what the K1 is doing, I used to think that “world max” stood for the best fighters around the world meeting each other in one arena, but the way some of those people even get to be contender never ceases to amaze me. Here’s an example, why aren’t Yodsanklai, Chokdee or other great fighters part of the roster?? I guess I’m just preaching to the choir…..lol.
Marketability? Would it be all that interesting for people to see another Thai in the ring? I think for K1 Japan you’ve got to have some skills but you’ve got to be the complete package. Where are you from? Do you already have a following? Are you marketable to the Japanese (Are you good looking?) Check out this pic of Holzken it looks like an ad for a pair of jeans or something…
Spydaman has a point but so does nopstar. i more week yall, one more week! I’ve got satalite t.v. ( the boot leg kind ) and i’ve never tried to search for the Japanese channel. I wonder….. hmmmmm. Then again there are plenty of Youtube folks that are dying to put it youtube. But it would be great to see it live. Where can i place bets if i wanted to? Bodog is a good spot but thanks to G.W.Bush, he dont allow Bodog to pay U.S folks. I guess i got to go to the local bookie when football season comes along.
Are u sayin that people wouldn’t be interested in seeing another thai in the ring? Why wouldn’t they??
I do agree with everything else you said Nop, but I also know that money can make anyone look good and marketable….I think they’re just scared Thai people, bad enough they have one that keeps wrecking havoc and has beaten everyone one of their champions (Masato, Kohi and Sato)….lol.
Just what i was talking about early, “Caged Boxing”. Boxing rules with 4-ounce gloves in a cage… not quite MMA and not quite Muay Thai..
That guy ain’t beating Buakaw. Buakaw has faced higher level opponents than Holzken- even in Max. Holzken is still young and is taller than most fighters his weight, hits hard, and is competent with combos, allwhich should give him a good advantage
Holzken has a ton of videos of his fights on his website: http://www.niekyholzken.com/. The scariest thing about him is his hands. Not just his combinations, but also his power. That, and he has Ramon Dekkers training him. But as Bunzy said, everyone looks good until they get in the ring with Buakaw. Drago has all those fancy spinning kicks, and he didn’t land ONE on Buakaw, and got countered HARD after almost every miss. It’s an interesting fight, for sure, but Buakaw is just damn good right now.
BUAKAW! unbeatable
free money for buakaw
Does anyone know if it’s possible to order K-1 Max on PPV in the USA?
Dave-
we are pretty much SOL… I’ve looked and have phoned around to all the sport bars in my area. No one seems to carry it. If you find anything out please let us know.
Hey , i saw somewhere that there is another Por Pramuk fighter fighting at the Max this Thursday. He is not inthe tournament but is an open fight. What do you guys think of him? First name starts with a ” N” Por Pramuk.
Nonthanun Por Pramuk.
21 years old
177 fights (recorded), 147 wins, 27 losses, 3 draws.
I can’t say I have ever seen him fight, I couldn’t find any videos of him at all. I can tell you this much though….Farid Villaume is gonna wipe his ass with him. Who knows..maybe he’ll prove me wrong.
