The Rants and Ramblings of a Muay Thai Fan

Ole Laursen vs. Virgil Kalakoda K-1 Scandanavia

June 3rd, 2008 · 12 Comments

Is it me or does Ole look more Thai each time we see him. It’s all that sticky rice he’s been eating in Ubon… What’s up with the neck tats man? That’s what happens when you start rolling with the MMA boys.

Seriously though I don’t why but I’ve always got such high hopes for Ole. I’m just not sure he ever really goes in with any kind of a game plan. I think he just goes in and wings it…Why is he standing there boxing with a boxer? I’m not sure why he would stand there and trade body shots, that’s where Kalakoda lives… Ole you’re a Nak Muay, you should be doing Nak Muay things… I’m not sure if his leg is still injured, that might explain why we saw very few kicks from him.

I know you’ve only got 3 quick rounds to work, so leg kicks aren’t an investment that are likely to return dividends. Laursen seems super fit, you would think he would be firing off loads of kicks, keep Kalakoda thinking about those kicks to the arms…

It would be cool to see Ole in the 2nd season of the Contender, I think he would do well.

Thoughts? Comments?

I’m a little surprised that this went an extra round especially considering that standing count. Sure, it was unnecessary, but it should still make an impact on the judges’ scorecards. o_0

Hmm.. Maybe he could have kicked more/used more punch/kick combos but I think Ole just fought a better fighter at this stage in his career. His conditioning and speed aren’t what they used to be. He did what he could (considering the rules) in the first two rounds and then just went for broke with his hands in the 3rd and extra rounds.
I have no idea how this went into extra rounds actually since Ole got counted in the second and only really made an impression in the third. K-1 judging is just completely random sometimes.

I’m not an expert, but Ole gave me the feeling he was tring to save it for the 3rd but in the extra round he couldn’t kick anymore?

Looks like his leg was hurting

Kalakoda #1, this guys is a master with his hands I love to watch him box guys that just kick, I think Kalakoda would be a major force if he would use his legs to set stuff up more

Good fight for Kalokoda. He weathered the kicks and punches well. He really should learn to kick more though- he’s very limited against top MT/kickboxing fighters.
Laursen did not look 100% at all in this fight though.

I just watched Scandinavia 2008 pre-fight interviews, where Marco Pique said, his wish is to participate in K-1 Max (of course) and in Contender Asia. It would be great to see him in Contender.

Anyone interested in interviews, check it here

I think that Ole would be a great addition to Contender Asia Season 2. I was very frustrated watching this fight as well. Ole was throwing some vicious knees but only in spurts. Low kicks would have def. worked in his favor by pounding Kalakoda’s chicken legs and slowing those devastating stiff jabs and hooks. Ole should have won this fight : (

Ive Always Liked Ole, Half Phillipine Half Danish, Sort of like me, Half Greenlandic Half Danish, But when I started watching him, was when he fought Drago and Since then hes just lost and lost. I later found out he rocked Buakaw but lost anyways. I do hate the fact that I never saw him use kicks Ever, but I never seen any Muay Thai Fights with him, only K1. and In that regard its been kinda embarrasing even though he faced Top names he lost em All. He looks very Asian but his Fighting DOESNT, the kicks, even before the broken foot no real kicking or low kicks, and thats why he just isnt a Superfighter like Souwer or Sombat or Yod.
