July 31, 2008 by nopstar

It’s that that time again for you to DL your issue of Nak Muay Magazine.  As always there are a host of interesting articles.  It’s funny but when you’ve written 450+ posts, you can forget that you’ve written something.

I was reading my article about the Ram Muay… damn I kind of sound like a dick!  I think I was getting tired of all the guys in my gym that didn’t have a clue.  I guess it was less about people not having any info, but having bad info.

I’m clearly going to be on the other end of the spectrum. I’m sure the vast majority of people who train do so as a form of fitness. (Me included)  It could be boxing, kickboxing whatever… they just happen to be doing Muay Thai because it’s a great workout.   I guess I find it mind boggling to be around people who are focused, train all the time, and fight but know next to nothing about Muay Thai.  I’m not talking about people who just started training… I’m talking people who’ve been training for ages and have stepped into the ring and don’t know who Yodsanklai is.  It just seems foreign to me.

When I’m drawn in by anything, I like to find out more info.  It’s part of the learning process.  What about you?  Clearly you guys are interested enough about Muay Thai to be on this blog. Do you train with anyone like this?

I also have the Urge to find the Best of the Best in Muay Thai, because I am doing MT. Its like when I played Football(Soccer) Automaticly I was Drawn into the learning of clubs, players, coaches, and Grounds.Same with Muay Thai!!! In my world It would be very strange not to use Media for exploring your new hobby, watching The Best of The BEST, getting inspired, little tricks, unwritten rules etc. And I must say I never met anyone in Football or MT that didnt know the Best of the best, or the upcoming players or fighters, or the Top stadiums!!! But my girlfriends Brother, does Muay Thai training, but doesnt spare, and Im 99% sure he never ever heard of Buakaw, Sakmongkol, Jongsanan, Saenchai, JWP or anybody, he told his sister that it was just for Selfdefence, Hence the No sparring, and for the health in conditioning!! I never met him! So I dont know why he never dug deeper! He is a classical Danish dude, so he is probably Socially groomed for “No Fighting unless someone attacks you” And i guess thats why he doesnt sparr!? Not that all danes dont sparr, but a lot of danish folks look at you with disgust if you tell them your into a sport where you try to hurt eachother! I guess the people we are discussing, is trying out all they can, and some find MT to be awesome, but feel no need for any inspiration!??

The cultural/traditional aspect was one of the things that helped draw me into Muay Thai. I love everything from the wai, through the mongkol. I also love watching the greats fight…. the internet being invaluable. There’s lots of people I know that don’t watch/analyze these fights. I was neck deep in Thai fight vids before I started sparring, and I think my style reflects that.

Also for me,it was this cultural, mystical, part about MT that made me choose it over another fight sport.

Also watching the respect between fighters, etc… it’s badass!

The Ram Muay article was pretty good (just read it now), and the arguments for and against it were good too.

Even though my country is just an hour’s flight from Thailand, we really don’t get much Muay Thai here. I don’t think there are any Thai trainers here, and I don’t know of any Filipinos who fight in Thailand. I don’t consider the gym I go to to be “100% authentic”, and I have to rely on this computer to see real muay thai, which sucks.

Frank….same here…..My style is very similar to the people I have been watchin’ in vids even b4 I started MT. I need to add that most of the people I used to watch were and are still (mostly) Thai fighters from Thailand so that’s basically what I model myself after. While everyone used to be on Ramon Dekkers’ jock….I was more on Samkor, Samart, Numsaknoi, ChokDee and them.
