MuayThai Theater

July 31, 2009 by nopstar

Many thanks to yknocka for sharing this clip with us.  For those of you who’ve been on MMT long enough, you’ll remember the first Sanchai vid I ever posted was from the same peeps.

I sort of view myself as a fairly astute individual.  I’d like to think I take notice of things… awake at the wheel you know what I mean?

I’ve lived in Bangkok for a couple years just out of University.  In my time in the Kok I’ve been through my share of shady and nice places… but somehow I’ve managed to miss this whole MuayThai Entertainment thing.  Granted I’m not really hanging out on Soi Cowboy etc. but I don’t ever once recall seeing this?

From Lumpini Stadium Champ to this?  Well, at least he’s working… everyone’s got bills to pay.

Have any of you guys seen this?

This is Pattaya! haha! The US navy ports there and they put on shows for drunk foreigners and navy men. Some will even fight against these guys. You have to buy a beer in order to watch or you can just hang in the street and get a far away view.

That was interesting. I kind of like the narrators oddly intoned raspy voice too.

I don’t get it, why this should be entertaining and fun to watch.
If you’re into martial arts you want to see a real fight, if you’re not into it you don’t want a bit of it.

I think it was a very pertinent post and also a very good documentary. For most of us, that actually train the art this could be kind of lame but for the regular tourist that is interested in muay thai just because they happen to be in Thailand this is a great choice. Not that much crowded, you can easily find a place to seat and watch the “fight”, you can grab a cold beer while watching and there is even snacks to go with it!

I’ve seen foreigners get into the ring with some of these guys, unknowing that they actually can fight, and it usually ends badly.

Saw something like this in Chiang Mai quite some time back. Not that I have a clue now, but I REALLY had no clue about MT then, and I still knew it was…uh, how shall I put this…”less” than what MT could/should be. The guys who took the “losing” side action were tough though. I couldn’t take that kind of beating for a few Baht and a beer and then pose for pictures with a smile on my face. OK, I couldn’t take that beating period, but I like to kid myself. It helps me get out of bed in the morning sometimes.
