Welcome back to the Muay Thai Minute… today Coach Damon takes us through a long arm Jab defence. It works well for nak muay of all heights, not just tall and lanky fighters. I prefer this to the closed guard as it keeps your opponent from clinching you up when you’re in a closed up position. I’ve also seen a variation on this technique where you block the jab with your elbow and not your forearm.
Happy drilling!

Nice..this is an effective one but the smart opponents are waiting for this to release the left hook and PAM! lights out..in that case the variation with the chin in the inside of the elbow (Pakon is the master) is more safe
Namsaknoi give us an example –> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSqic2m7FBA

I’m not sure if I agree with you guys…I’ve been using this defense for as long as I can remember and I honestly can’t remember a left hook really threatening…if they do connect it’s usually to the top of the head as ur chin should be well tucked in to begin with. Furthermore, I really don’t see how that left hook couldn’t go around the “standard” guard as your forearms are protecting the front of your face against straight punches. Also, I’m quite sure that the extended hand in the long arm defense is used to keep the other person from closing in and in order to connect with a hook you have to be at a fairly close range. I think that defense is perfect to set up an elbow. IMO

Damon should’ve explained that the extended arm is used as a “feeler” to guage distance for kicking and kneeing and keep the opponent at bay. He just said it’s an alternative defense.

Hey Guys, Good to hear all your points on this defence and looking back maybe there could’ve been a better explanation on the long arm. However there will be more minutes with different variations and better explanations…. Hope you guys are still enjoying the minutes….even after a year!!
