Happy Friday nak muay… today coach Damon takes us through a basic but effective catch and takedown move, for the more advanced nak muay what you’ll want to work on is a continuation move.  Once you’ve cranked your opponent over release the leg and return fire.  It’s not as easy as it seems because you need to make sure that you are clear of the leg that you just released.

  1. I mean no disrespect to Coach Damon, he seems like a great guy but I’m not a fan of many of these muay Thai Minutes. More than half of them demonstrate very poor technique and I think they would lead to a fighter actually getting MORE hurt than these would be beneficial. Just my two cents…

    • i highly disagree.

    • You know, if you’re make a bold statement like this, you could at least elaborate or give examples. All the techniques i’ve seen from damon have been legit and are techniques i’ve learned myself at various Thai camps.

      • Example A.) Having also attended many muay Thai seminars and camps, I can tell you that nobody would step at a 90 degree angle to catch a kick. That’s how you get your ribs broken. Even light sparring, doing this can still get you hurt. You cut at a 45 to get INSIDE of the power, and start your catch technique.

Also, this technique was just suprising to me because I’ve never heard of turning someone over the way the Coach had demonstrated. Some people may have a lot of success with this. My comment was not speaking for a group of people, I was merely speaking for myself. Again, I apologize to anyone who may have misconstrued my original meaning.

  2. Hey Nakmuaymusick,

    Thank you for your comments

I understand not everybody will be a fan of all the MTM’s or my teaching style for that matter. As I have mentioned before, some of them could have been explained or shown a little better etc.
All techniques shown have multiple variations as well as good points and bad points.

I’m a big believer in timing and application of technique as some techniques are great to apply whilst drilling with a partner but difficult to apply during a professional bout.

As a member of the My Muay Thai community I’m  always up for questions critisism (constructive or not).

You are the the community and any feedback or suggestions to help us improve the minutes are really appreciated.

    No disrespect intended : )

  3. Wow, I don’t expect that actually Coach Damon have observed this forum until now

  4. I would love to trade some info with you, sir. I personally have used some of the techniques you have demonstrated. But there are certain things I didn’t agree with. I didn’t mean to be disrespectful in any way. I apologize if it came off that way

  5. Thanks again Damon et al, . Keep em coming. No disrespect intended, but no matter what there will always be a critic. No medium allows perfect communication. If Num was here doing a MT minute someone would have an issue. My $0.02, appreciate it for what it is and apply and adapt accordingly

  6. I really believe everyone has taken this out of context. I’m not trying to disrespect anybody. I had simply made an observation, and wasn’t impressed by this particular technique. I don’t think a MINUTE is enough to do a technique justice. There are SO many things that are connected to a single manuever. I’m simply stating a fact and not trying to heat anyone up

    • im actually quite sure your original comment was made due to your ignorance of a technique youve never seen before….i dont know if youve noticed but damon teaches us some really cool stuff. more than run of the mill shit youll find on youtube vids. which is why i love these vids. i also wasnt too familiar with this technique, but now that i think about it ive certainly seen many nak muay use it. as im sure all of us on mmt have.

  7. this is a great move, i used it all the time, with take downs, to pull my opponent off balance or push them backwards and finish with a knee…..etc
when ever you catch a kick, if stepping in or out… you will always take some sort of a hit, its just getting the timing right.
    keep them coming coach damon
    much love

  8. i’m a big fan of this technique myself but wanted to question this technique in regards to scoring. how is this technique seen in a judge’s eye and how does it score? the kick is landing right but is caught at the same time? also, from the amount of time spent on youtube watching fight vids, has anyone noticed how this technique is not as popular amongst thai fighters compared to nak muays outside of thailand? any explanation?

    • ive seen foreigners use this on thai nak muays with great success. on more than one popular fight…its usually in the first round when the thais are too into their own swag and first round laziness, then they wake up after getting embarrassed by a farang using this effectively against them.

  9. sabaisabai-

So for a kick to score “full marks” it needs to show effect, there is a nominal score but when a kick is effective it will either move or off balance an opponent, or cause your opponent to show some sort of physical (pain) or psychological (flinching) effect. By having your kick caught and turned, you are shown to be ineffective, your offense has been nullified…

I think it’s quite rare at the higher levels, as the kicker can quickly nullify the catch by turning their leg in, leaping into the caught leg, etc. Also if the kicker has supreme balance and flexibility, it’s really difficult to get them down (check out Jordan Watson)

  10. muay thai minute….key word MINUTE

  11. I was taught that technique from Berklerk Pinsinchai,he used the opposite hand to aid the takedown by pressing down behind opponents knee.

On the scoring its always been my understanding that a body kick scores if its landed on the target whether caught or not, full power or not, it has landed and therefore scores, watch boxers such as Silapathai (example below)and you will see they get their leg out quickly before its caught but are still scoring the point:)

    • thanks nop for the explanation. the reason i ask is because i got a explanation similar to namphon’s. regardless, i still love this technique. so many other techniques to choose from once you have that leg! : ) keep these segments comin!
