Muay Thai Gear Review: Combat Sports Thai Pads

February 27, 2007 by nopstar

Combat Sports Thai PadsOur gym just got a few pair of the “Combat Sports International” Thai pads. My initial impression of them was that these feel sort of cheap. They’re Velcro as well, which in my opinion is a fairly big minus. If you come to our gym, all the Thai Pads, with Velcro are pretty much shot; the Velcro seems to have a life of only a few months.

A positive point for me is that they’re really light. They’re about the same weight as the “Top Contender” pads I was able to throw combos with these effortlessly. I was holding for someone who kicks like a mule and there wasn’t any transference to my forearms.

From a kicking standpoint they felt typical, they weren’t too soft and they weren’t like kicking the Bunkerd Sport Wear Thai Pad bricks. Nothing out of the ordinary here…

However as we finished our workout we notices that the side stitching had burst. When I took a closer look I realized that the whole side is shoddily stitched together with what looks to be a shoelace. I asked when these were put out for use, and apparently they’ve only been used about a dozen times.

So if you’re looking for Thai Pads, I’d say these aren’t them. At $79.95 they aren’t the most expensive in the lot, but I guess you get what you pay for. We’ve got 2 more pair that are still holding up. I’ll let you know how they hold up.

Yo….I bought those…the ones I have are extra long to protect kickers who can’t aim and like to kick elbows…lol. Anyway…stay away from them, the laces are sh#$%…..mines bust in a matter of several months, that shouldn’t be. Also, they are way too soft, I myself like hard pads as they help conditioning my shins…..but with those, I might as well be kicking pillows. I actually like the velcro, much faster to take out and put back on ( especially if u plan on switchin back and forth between holdin and hittin with a partner). I’ll give those pads a 5 outta 10.

I got some of the contoured “Title MMA” Thai pads. Bad idea, the sides (although not laced) still busted up a couple of weeks after I got them. On the other hand I also just bought some Fairtex “standard” sized pads, they are about the size of focus mitts and about an inch thick. I can’t win!

I have tried those Combat Sports pads and they seem very bouncy when both kicking and holding- although the holding part is getting better as you get used to the bounce. I noticed the shody stitching also. Velcro is almost never a good option, as it wears out. Cheap in price and quality, but not the worse.

I thought about gettingthose but decided against them. Good decision I guess. I ended up with the ones from KOfight gear, which are holding up very well and are super hard.

Oh…Taki…I know the ones you are talking about …..Yea we use those in our gym….those are hard and take a while to break in…lol….They’re sure to condition ur shins as well as give u a great work out. I just wish they were a lil longer, I’m sure most of yall have had to hold pads for this one guy who can’t aim for his life and always ends up hitting your elbows (bad for him!) or your ribs (very bad for you!) . I love them, but a few people in my class avoid them like the plagues, mostly those who just started and think they are way to hard.

W brand is where it’s at!!! i know what josh is talking about with those fairtex ones but at least they are fairly sturdy and stay together! i am shocked at the combat sports ones! my first pair(of my own) were a pair of synthetic top contender ones that i’ve had for about 2 years and everyone at the gym uses them now and they are still great! but, i got ahold of a pair of W Brand ones and MY GOD!!! all around awesome. i’m thinking about getting a pair of thaisport small pads (because they are more versitile) and from what it looks like they are very similar to the W’s, i’ll report when i get them and use them for a while!
