Muay Thai Around the World
February 26, 2007 by nopstar
Where you at people? I was looking at my traffic last night, and I was curious about where most of you are from? I found some surprises but I feel it’s a fairly representative picture of the state of Muay Thai around the world.
Granted this blog is only really accessible to English readers, so the data is skewed in that sense. However, I’m finding that the data supports my ideas of where Muay Thai is popular around the world. If you look at the world map, you’ll see the three areas where I’m getting zero traffic from are Greenland, Russia and Africa.
I’m fairly certain I’m wrong about Russia though, I know they’ve got some fighters. Greenland and Africa though don’t seem to me like they would be much of a Muay Thai scene there.
Looking at the map of the US, everything sort of looks about right. I didn’t imagine Muay Thai being too popular in Montana. As far as the most popular in the States it’s California especially SF, Oakland and LA, and the Eastern Corridor NJ, NYC and Pa.
As for internationally… I think once again my data is skewed “English” According to my reporting most of my International traffic comes from Sweden! I know the Swedes have Jorgen Kruth but is Muay Thai really that popular there? Or does a higher portion of their population speak English? Then the list goes something like this:
- Sweden?
- Canada
- UK
- Thailand
- Australia
- Germany
- Japan
- Brazil
- France
- Netherlands
- Spain
Where are you from and where do you train? I would love to hear.

From Sweden, currently not training because of the distance to trainingfacilities since my club went down. I think the interrest in muay thai and newer martial arts in general (ex. mma) has exploded the last years. We’ve also mangaded to produce a couple of fighters that have made some success outside the country. Chris Foster is a name you might want to check out. I think this in combination with our pretty good knowledge in english makes the count rather high.
Hi, i´m from Spain, I train in a little city, Teruel, but we go every year to Thailand.
More light on MT in Mexico: Tijuana, Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara, Mexico City and Monterey have strong presences. I know Jongsanan has been flown out to Moneteray at least once to conduct a seminar.
NY, NY at 5 points fitness. A great gym with many good teachers and promising fighters.
Hey, I train out of the Ottawa Academy of Martial Arts in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Ur neighborhood swinger, Spydaman here repping NJ. I currently train Muay Thai outta ‘A.M.A Fight Club’ in Whipany, NJ. I Used to train at ‘Cornerstone’ in Kenilworth, NJ…I’m also a Student of Master K (www.elbowko.com). I’m a big fan of Buakaw ( just thought I’d throw that in there…lol). Muay Thai is big out here…unfortunately…it seems that MMA is even bigger…so everyone is opening Mixed Martial Arts school left and right. Good luck finding a pure Muay Thai school in NJ, it will take u a while. California has it all..I envy yall, over there.
Glad to see other countries represented here besides the US- even though this site is in English, I think its a great testament to the popularity of Muay Thai as well as this groovy site.
I knew your blog 1 month ago, but now, everyday I check the news. I’m a professional fighter (and fight reporter too) here in São Paulo – Brazil- and train at Gibi Thai. Theres a lot of gyms, but few did a good job. I will travel to Bangkok with a friend – fighter too- in april and will stay there for 6 months (or more), because this I was looking for informations, about a farang life.
I hope survive!
Good luck to you Leonardo- you should do just fine. Just stay on track- as there could be many distractions.
Leonardo-
Thanks for commenting and welcome to MMT. Where are you training in Thailand? 6 months… I’m jealous. Keep us posted.
I don’t know what will be the camp. Our manager is trying some places for us, but if he can’t, we will search this at BKK or Pattaya.
Will be hard find a house for rent, a place to train, the language difficulties, but is our chance.
We’re going to win and learn a lot.
Thanks Tong Po, next month begin our adventure. Nopstar MMT is a great site, one of my references today, thanks too.
