Muay Thai Addicts I- Results

June 4, 2009 by nopstar

This past Sunday KO-Gym (my current camp) held it’s annual show at Porchester Hall in London.  David Pacquette and Saro Presti headlined the sold out event.

I was originally going to MC the event and was silently relieved when they decided to hire a professional.  I practiced doing the voice while in the shower and I have to admit I was pretty shit.  I’m pretty sure the crowd would have smelled a rookie and had their way with me.

“Moo Ping would have to be my favorite meat on a stick…”

Instead I was asked to do the fight commentary… that was loads and loads of fun.  I’m not saying I’m any good at it; in fact most of my commentary was pretty much unusable!

I think I’m going to have to go in and redub it… I’ve got a new found respect for commentators it definitely takes practice.  I tend to think less is more, but you can’t have too much dead air… there was a fight that was pretty boring, and it was pretty difficult to find anything positive to say about it.  My partner in crime Abni, and would look at each other and shake our heads… “That was a nice kick?”  Great fun, great seats.  I don’t think I’ve ever sat through and entire evening of fights and watched every single fight.  Normally I’m running around eating nachos / churros or some shit with cheese on it. I wanted to thank Bill Judd for allowing me the honor, and Isabelle Aranega for putting together such a good show.  You check out out the full fight report and more pictures here.

On to the fights:

It was a night of exceptional fights; I’m hoping to get the footage up as soon as possible.  David’s fight was pretty much a war.  As you MMT regulars should know this was a Contender Asia Season 1 vs. 2 match up.   David represented the UK last year and Saro will be representing Italy this season.

It had to be a daunting task for Saro to fight David in the very heart of his hometown and in front of his peeps.  Mad props to Presti for putting up such a great fight especially under the circumstances.

The fight was 5 x3 min rounds full Thai rules.  The fight started of at a blistering pace and pretty much stayed that way for the whole bout.  The traditional feel out round was nowhere to be found as David threw a flurry of downward elbows in Saro’s direction.  It was going to get ugly.

As the match wore on David began to step it up both physically and technically as he landed a couple of teeps to the face, as well as right kick, right knee combinations.

I spoke with David yesterday and he mentioned that he did feel a little bit bad about pouring it.  There were a couple of times he said he knew Saro was winded from one of his knees but he kept up the pressure.

Anyway, David took the decision and the WKN World Title.

If you look carefully you can see me peeking through Young Greg’s legs…

Young Greg, (actually his name is Greg Wootton) I’m a little George Bush-ish in the sense that I’ve got bad habit of giving people nicknames.  Greg had a spectacular fight, on of the most technical of the entire evening.  Greg’s name has come up a couple of times on MMT… I’m continually impressed with composure, and maturity in the ring.   I’m quite certain he’s going to make onto the world stage.

He fought a very strong Adam Lee Mason from Keddles Gym.  Greg had the height advantage and was able to really work that to his advantage.  He used his teeps effective to keep Mason at bay while following up with long punches straight down the middle.

As I mentioned I’ll try to get some footage up asap, as always if you come across any footage… please send it my way.

On the same night as this show there was a show in the North of England that had 13 or 14 full muay thai rules fights.

If you go on http://www.p4tv.com you can watch the event. There really were some awesome, awsome fights, demonstrating that the level of authentic MT in the UK is on the up and up.Notable fights were the Juk/Trainer fight, Andy Thrashers title fight, Kapowitz/dennis title fight and james frances fight. Not see all the rest yet but there up on p4tv for all to see.
