Muay Thai 101: Double Leg Kick

April 18, 2007 by nopstar

One of our fighters has been busy preparing for his first amateur bout this Friday. I was watching our trainer Neungsiam drill with him. One technique that caught my eye as particularly evil was the double leg kick. I’ve never actually attempted this technique, but appears straight forward enough. Since I don’t own a video camera, someone else’s clip will have to do.

I’m playing around with the idea of buying a video camera so I can do a proper Muay Thai 101. I found this clip with Vut Kamnark. I’ve never met Khun Vut, but I know he had a gym down in SoCal for ages. I think I heard he’s the new training and guest manager at Fairtex Pattaya.

Wouldn’t this be against the rules in a lot of amateur bouts where you’re not allowed to strike a target in a manner that would cause it to go against a joint? Maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about. :P

Thanks for the video link, was a good little tutorial.

At first I was thinking the kick would strike the back of the legs, more like a sweep, wouldn’t that be more effective?

    Vincenze,

Personally I think this is far more devastating then a kick to the back of the thighs. Getting swept sucks but getting both your quads chopped, has to be worse.

Interesting, but fairly difficult to evenly distribute the kick over the two legs. Probably very effective for someone with a close stance.

As you can see, it works very well for orthodox fighters against southpaws and vice versa.

I use that technique all the time while sparring…my opponents tell me that it hurts more in the back leg..but they also feel it in the front leg. I like to kick right underneath the groin to make sure I get both legs….if u go too low…u’ll miss the back leg….unless u have a serious leg reach advantage on him. Thanx for the vid Nopstar..on point as usual

Done this once witha sparring partner. Like Spyda man said, kick right below his nut sack.

The partner froze for about 2 seconds – due to the pain.

To be fair, i didnt kick right below the nut sack, I did kick his nut sack. But atleast we know its effective.

    Bunzy-

That’s some cold blooded shit! We’ve got a guy in our gym we’ve named Peter “Punt” because he’s got a kick that’s just like a punt to your balls.

Bunzy gets a gold star for accuracy!

Speaking of kicks to the nuts, Ologun… balls of steel? Has to be to take one full on from the White Lotus. Seriously if you go back and watch the clip at about 10:18 you’ll see that Buakaw turns his leg over and really gets that nice whipping turnover action… my stomach hurts just watching it.

yeah, i love that kick! it’s hard to get both legs evenly though! i have, however, had some success when i set it up with an outside/inside combo. if i can get the guy to check it and kick his calf so his legs come down in a straight line then i can get both legs. otherwise, even if i step of the a 45, it turns in to a kick to his rear leg or i end up missing the rear leg because i have midget legs. i’m 5′10″ with like a 29″ inseam! got a hell of a torso though! LOL! i’ll usually go to the back leg at the calf if i want him to drop?

oh, on the nut thing! i was working with a new kid on the thai pads & belly pad and i was calling out the kicks fr him and i called out “front leg”, i meant thai kick. he got confused and kinda kicked my front leg but it was more of a “punt” motion as has been mentioned and he rang my cup! dropped me for the count! later i found out he was the punter on his high school football team? LOL! whoops!
