Muay Boran 101

January 18, 2007 by nopstar

Muay Boran is the art Muay Thai is based off… Muay Thai’s Daddy. If you go into any of the Muay Thai shops around Lumpini or Rajadomnern you are going to see these posters for sale. They’re illustrations of all the different strikes in Muay Boran. I know squat about Muay Boran so I’m speaking way outside my area of knowledge. I was taking a look at the pics and one of the techniques caught my eye.

I’m not calling bullshit on this, because I’m sure at some point in time someone tried pulling off this move. I really hope it worked out for them.

What was dumbest move you’ve ever pulled off in a fight? I’d love to hear.

This is a Muay Boran technique. The technique is to move inside your opponents guards, swat them outwards then jumping parallel to the ground and striking with a headbutt to the face.
Yes, it’s a very risky technique.

i’m learning muay boran, and actually did that on a wavemaster a few weeks ago. my trainer has those posters. that left me a bit dazed.

That’s excellent. I’m also a fan of the diving punch. I keep having this image of me trying it and the person moving.

I trained in shotokan before Muay Thai. There are lots of risky, or silly depending on your point of view, moves. My personal favorite was called a “U-punch”. You basically bend sideways and puch someone in the head and the groin at the same time.
    Hillarious.

Oh by the way Mai. The site is great, keep it up.
See you at the gym. Oh and I spelled hilarious wrong. I’m a dummy.

Very nice. I always thought it was funny in dojos that had kicks called “tornado” or strikes called “cobra” or “superman punch.”

Now, strike now, strike fast… COBRA!!

A lot of the moves of muay thai and muay boran translate to some pretty cool terms. Stuff like “Dragon whips its tail” etc.. Nopstar, maybe a post on some of the cooler or funnier terms for muay thai techniques ?

Headbutt can also be used to the body as shown on the poster. The body would probably be a better target than the head since it is larger.

I think the name of the flying headbutt technique
is called The Ascetic Diving In The Pond.

This technique probably has a very low sucess rate in the ring with an experienced fighter. It may work on a person who knows absolutly nothing about Thai boxing.

I tried this once with a punch instead of an elbow… not sure how it looked but it felt like it did some damage. I really wish I had it on video

the craziest moved i’ve ever pulled off I pulled off a few times in sparring matches. It was a cartwheel kick…just do a cartwheel and try kicking the person when your feet come down, it’s not as hard to hit somebody with that as you might think. x_X

the craziest move i ever did was, as opponent closed in I PULLED OUT MY JUNK, and PISSED ALL OVER HIS SHINS. when he looked down and was like WTF, i axe kicked him on the bridge of his nose. when he fell to his back I toe kicked him in the TAINT.
