Meet me at Chinks

April 6th, 2008 · 30 Comments

Sorry to disappoint… no Muay Thai this morning. I had meant to blog this weekend but ended up chilling instead. I was getting a little sick of the cold here in London so this past weekend I went in search of sun.

I ended up in Cannes, if any of you have ever been you’ll know there isn’t a whole lot to do except eat and people watch. The eating is absolutely exceptional… anyway I’m walking along and I come across the only Thai restaurant I’ve seen in Cannes… but what the hell is going on here?

I’m not one of those Thai’s that’s incapable of eating a meal unless it has rice… but even if I wanted to eat Thai that night, no self respecting Asian is going to get caught in a place called Chinks! Holy shit balls.

Anyway, changing gears, I’ve been giving this some thought lately… but if any of you out there are interested in writing posts and blogging for MMT drop me an email. Nopstar at mymuaythai dot com

On that note it’s time for me to go bed. See you in the AM

You left London on the one weekend in the past couple of years when we’ve had really decent snow?

    You missed out brother.

    I can just imagine:
    Random white guy:
“Hey, I’m hungry. Wanna go Chinks?”

    Me:
    “What did you call me?

    Random white guy:
    “Chinks, lets go!”

    BAM!!

    * leaves with teeth stuck in my elbow *

“Chinks”???!!! It’s so ridiculous it’s funny. I wonder who came up with that one and if they knew what it all means.

  • 4 SE // Apr 7, 2008 at 12:16 am

  • 5 ahmoy // Apr 7, 2008 at 12:27 am

lol thats tacky, i like it. I’m Asian as well and i don’t mind as long as the owner of the place is Asian lol.

    Hey Nop,

I know here, in London, a Thai pub, yes exactly, wtf???

Is a pub decorated with the royal family and with Thai kitchen, Excellent!! I love it!

btw I’m from Barcelona, you asked before if someone was from there…

“Chinks”?….Honestly…unless the owner is American….I doubt they meant it that way. Of my knowledge “Chink” isn’t a word used in France and even in English “Chink” is a deragotory word used to describe Chinese people not Thais.

  • 9 ed // Apr 7, 2008 at 9:37 am

regardless if ‘chink’ is a derogatory word for chinese and not thais, it has the same general meaning when applied from a non-asian to an asian. if someone calls me a ‘jap’, ‘nip’, or ‘gook’ - i’d be pissed off (even though i’m taiwanese).

Back here in the city (San Francisco) I stumbled across a restaurant called Malacca. It’s in the Castro. You probably don’t know, because you aren’t Greek, but Malaka means, well it means a few things but is usually reserved for someone who masturbates too much or is a wanker.

  • 11 Sakkis // Apr 7, 2008 at 10:00 am

Oh, and by the way, I’d love to write in, but I doubt it’d be publish worthy.

Isn’t there a Vietnamese restaurant in London called Phat Phuck?

    http://www.london-eating.co.uk/5159.htm

Also, there is a chinese place in Miami, FL called Sum Yum Gai. http://www.miamibeach411.com/Restaurants/sumyum.html

I guess over there you shouldn’t order the cream of Sum Yum Gai.

perhaps they did it just to poke fun at themselves, like satire. you know, the way fat guys who own a place call it “Tiny’s” ??

it’s pretty ridiculous either way, but it still made me laugh, not hard, but just a little.

but what’s with all the white guy hating!? not only white people are racist! hahah

  • 14 yknocka // Apr 7, 2008 at 3:42 pm

you shouldv’e spray painted “free tibet” on their front door. lol

btw- im still boycotting “cheese nips”

  • 15 spydaman // Apr 7, 2008 at 3:43 pm

I just don’t understand why they would call a “Thai” place “Chink”…when “Chink” is a deragotary word toward “Chinese” People??…My guess is either the guys who named it dunno wut it means (which means they could be french)…..or They’re just plain stupid (means they could be american)….I dunno whether the word “Chink” is used in England…but I’ve heard used in the US plenty. There are deragotary words for chinese people in France….but of my knowledge…”Chink” is not one of them.

  • 19 SE // Apr 7, 2008 at 5:11 pm

  • 20 spydaman // Apr 7, 2008 at 5:22 pm

  • 21 GregH // Apr 7, 2008 at 5:37 pm

  • 23 ahmoy // Apr 7, 2008 at 6:51 pm

Malacca is one of the states in malaysia. Malacca was a very famous business area a very long long time ago, but now is considered as historic place only.

  • 24 jayboon // Apr 7, 2008 at 8:39 pm

    And your point is Ernesto?

  • 26 C // Apr 8, 2008 at 1:08 pm

British people don’t say “chink”?? The only time someone called me a “chink” was in Manchester. (I live in Indiana btw.) I was gonna punch holes on that dumbass before my lady friend dragged me away. Naming a restaurant “chink’s”?? wtf was the owner thinking??? do you ever see a restaurant called “n***o’s”??

  • 27 Shadyeskimo // Apr 9, 2008 at 6:13 am

As a Half Half breed i can see both the humour and the potentially offending side of it, so….. HA HA HA HA and better watch their sign when it gets dark………No seriously I couldnt stop laughing at the Headline along with the Picture. Lol

  • 28 spydaman // Apr 9, 2008 at 8:22 am

C…if u’re referring to me…I said I “don’t know” if they use that word in england”.

Im pretty sure they’re are plenty restaurants name “Negro” is Hispanic countries….since “NEGRO” only means “BLACK” in spanish.
Basically wut I’m sayin is that if the restaurant was in the US (or in england or any english speakin countries since I now know that they use the word as well) Then I would be outraged…..but if France “Chink” could mean somethin completely different. The only way to kno would be ask someone who lives there now. I’m just tryin to be a lil objective. Don’t kill me guyz!!!!

Ur right Shady….that pic if freakin’ hilarious, just look at Nop’s face.

  • 29 C // Apr 9, 2008 at 4:35 pm

Oh no spydaman take it easy. i was just making a point + telling a story. didn’t mean to “kill” you. lol you are right about “negro” in Spanish. i was just saying that no one would dare to do that in the States.

Nop, i guess you should go to “chink’s” and ask the owner about the name. we are really curious about it. lol
