The Rants and Ramblings of a Muay Thai Fan

Los Angeles WBC fight results

Hey guys sorry for the late post… just got back in from LA. Overall I thought it was a pretty good event. Although it would have been nice to know in advance that the fights were going to be held in the parking lot of the Normandie Casino. Knowing that I might have brought a heavy sweatshirt instead of freezing my ass off.

Lamsongkram and Kaew

They started right at 7 and lead with all of the titles fights. They were broadcasting live to Thailand… anyone who came late would have missed a lot of the main events. I’m sure the PPV will be out in a few weeks, I’ll be sure to post whenever we get footage. So this is what went down…

WBC Heavyweight International Title:
Ricardo Van den Bos vs Shane Rocky Rosario (Oyama). Rosario by 2 rd TKO

I was kind of shocked by this bout. I’ve never seen Bos in action but I thought he had a lot more fights under his belt. He was clearly overwhelmed my Rosario. Rosario was impressive, nice kicks and heavy ass hands. Van den Bos, got beat up pretty bad.

WBC World Super Featherweight Title:
Kaew Fairtex vs Genki Yamamoto. Kaew by 5rd unanimous decision.

I spoke briefly with Kaew before his fight. He was standing watching the heavyweight bout, and said he couldn’t believe how chilly it was. I knew the Kaew had some visa issues, and had just arrived a day or two prior to the event. He said he felt fine… He won all 5 rounds, but it was clear that he wasn’t nearly as sharp as he could have been. He appeared pretty tired after 3rd round.

WBC World Middleweight Title:
Lamsongkram Chuwattana vs Yohan Lidon. Lamsongkram by 5rd unanimous decision.

It’s a shame that Lamsongkram won’t be in The Contender Asia, he would have been very entertaining. Of all the Nak Muays I’ve met, he sticks out as having one of the biggest ring personalities. At the start of the match, he was looking to the crowd, raising his arms to say, the hell is wrong with you guys… make some f’in noise. He made short work of Lidon and opened him up pretty bad with his right elbow. Towards the end Lidon admitting defeat was no longer engaging Lamsongkram. In typical Thai style Lamsongkram backed off him to let the time run out. This drew boo’s from the crowd as most of the audience didn’t know what the hell was going on.

Dan, Lamsongkram, Nopstar

Check out the Jatukam!

At the end of the fight, Lamsongkram played to the crowd and circled the ring pointing to his sharp ass elbow.

I caught up with him after the fight, he said it had been sometime since he last fought, and that he felt a little slow.

WBC Muay thai International Super featherweight title:
Hiromasa Masuda vs Evgeni Kihl. Evgeni Kihl by 5rd Split decision.

I lost interest in this fight after the first round, got up and wandered… sorry

WBC United States Welterweight Title:
Edmond Tarverdyan vs Ben Yelle. Tarverdyan by 5rd unanimous decision

Pretty good fight, Tarverdyan clearly comes from a Kickboxing back ground. He was landing a kick quite similar to Feitosa’s “Brazilian Kick”. Yelle, had troubles overcoming Tarvedyan’s reach and aggressiveness. This was one of the bloodier fights of the evening. Tarvedyan was really making use of elbow and bloodied up Yelle with little effort.

WBC United States Super Welter weight Title:
Baxter Humby vs Mychael Pischello. Piscello by 2rd TKO Corner Stoppage

First round started off pretty well, Piscello looked like he was trying to work out a strategy. Towards the end of the round, I think he caught Humby with a spinning elbow then right cross? Anyway, Humby looked frustrated and didn’t want to come back out.

WBC United States Featherweight Title:
Romie Adanza vs Hidemaru. Adanza by 5rd decision.

Lost interest… didn’t catch much of this bout.

WBC International Lightweight Title:
Kaensak vs Fabio Pinca. Pinca by 5rd unanimous decision

This was a great fight, Kaensak who’s fight name is “Young Boy” is anything but. He looked sharp, but it was evident that by the 3rd round he was looking pretty winded. I looked at Pinca, and he was barely breathing hard. Pinca stepped it up another notch and began stalking Kaensak. He landed a few spinning elbows and I think one leaping elbow. By the 5th round, Kaensak was just trying to keep Pinca off him.

WBC International Super Welterweight Title:
Michael Mannaquil vs RaKarma Young. Mannaquil by 5rd split decision.

I’ll write more on this later…

WBC Superfight 70kg
Malaipetch Team Diamond vs Jan Van Denderen. Malaipetch by 5rd unanimous decision.

Malaipetch is bad, bad, man. Anyway I’m honestly surprised Van Denderen was able to make it all 5 rounds. He basically got toyed with… I think Van Denderen’s ribs on the left side have got to be damaged, same with his left arm. He must have been kicked there full force at least a dozen times, maybe more.

Overall I thought it was a very good event. I think Dennis Warner could improve a lot of things (buying tix online) but I’m just happy to see any high caliber Muay Thai

It was a very good event.

My favorite fight was: Kaensak vs Fabio Pinca

Kaensak was expected to dominate, but Pinca did very well and won.

I was impressed with Taverdyan. Sizing up both of the fighters, he didn’t look like much, bu he sure knew how to use those elbows. His kicks were sneaky, although not as powerful as a thai style kick.

I really enjoyed the Lamsongkram/Lidon fight. For being rusty, Lam looked good. I had to leave nefore tha Malaipet fight, so I’m hoping you can post it when it’s released.

One thing I found interesting: two of my friends that came a MMA/jiu jitsu fans and practitioners. This was their first MT event. They were blown away(and a little scared) by how much punishment the fighters take, and keep coming. one of them said, “If this was a UFC fight, they would have stopped it already.” They were impressed by the toughness of all the fighters.

Remember, “Everyone is good at Jiu Jitsu… until they are punched in the face.”

Can’t wait to catch the videos of these fights.

  • 4 Ernesto // Sep 10, 2007 at 11:23 am

DAMN IT NOP: how you going to tease me with “I’ll write more on this later…”? lol That being said I can only imagine you have something up yr sleeve.

PUNCH THE FACE.. PUNCH THE FACE

Off topic: Kongo who beat Cro Cop displayed damn good MT in their UFC bout this past Saturday..

Malaipet totally had his way in the fight. Like always, he had a smile on his the whole fight, and he burtalized the left ribs and arm of his opponent. For Malaipet they need to bring some better fighter from Holland.

I fought Ben Yelle two years ago in milwaukee. he looked worse in this fight, heard he was trained by coban and it showed in his hardheaded fighting style.

Kaew was very tired because he’s been in the military and only had two weeks to train. Genki was wearing a pair of fairtex shorts at the press conference. they were blue and matched Kaew’s red pair so i think he gave them to Genki.

for a 33 year old thai kaensak is awesome. very strong and very fast. Pinca has faught atleast 3 thais so this was old news to him.

maniquil vs young… tuff to talk about this one without getting pissed off at ra karma. he let michael hit him 6-7 times clean on the jaw to “prove” he was tuff and got rocked instead. ra deserved to lose more than michael deserved to win.

as a silent observer for quite some time i’ve been really impressed with the quality of nopstar’s writings and class

    but his commentators…wow

from what i’ve read this michael kid seems like a class act with legit skills but all i hear on this site are people trying to discredit him. give credit where credit is due. from what i saw the kid hit ra with everything in the book. why wouldn’t that deserve a win. the thai champs themselves commented on how impressed they were with michael, at least out of the corner of my eye.

i was impressed with ra too but geez i don’t think the decision would have been different had ra not given michael 6-7 clean shots.

fabio pinca gave the best performance on this bill, he was superb.
i spoke to him the next day and he was very, very happy.
as for ricardo, he just didnt do himself justice. i think he underestimated rosario and was caught cold. however he showed great heart to keep getting up. he’s only 22 so will come again.
as for rakarma - what a crazy, crazy man taking those shots in the face.

one last thing - the old white ref was terrible and didnt know the rules.. he warned lamsongkram twice for grappling!!!!

  • 9 nopstar // Sep 11, 2007 at 8:55 am

I think he gave Lamsongkram a warning for shoving? The look on Lamsongkram face was classic…

Little bit of trivia, I’ve written about this in the past, lets see if anyone remembers. What does Lam- Songkrahm mean?

  • 10 stephen // Sep 11, 2007 at 8:56 am

    built for war!!!

  • 11 nopstar // Sep 11, 2007 at 9:13 am

    Stephen-

Damn, that was fast…has to be the coolest fight name ever.

My fight name would be “GuDakMooPing”…

  • 12 Ernesto // Sep 11, 2007 at 10:11 am

I’ve known Michael for over 4 years and he is an extremely hard worker, talented, down-to-earth and very humble. If a fighter takes advantage of ‘free hits’ - he deserves to win.

That’s definitely the best fight name ever.

  • 13 Tong Po // Sep 11, 2007 at 12:50 pm

On the rare occasions that I’ve met Michael (Mannequil), he is always very polite and a nice kid. He is at the peak of his skills, while Ra has not fought too much in the last years- also, I don’t think Ra is at his peak anymore.

Tong Po ChobJubKai… “likes to touch eggs”

  • 18 Ernesto // Sep 11, 2007 at 5:02 pm

That has a special ring to it.. KeeMao..

  • 19 MT Boyz // Sep 11, 2007 at 11:01 pm

That was not Mustapha El Farosi with Masuda. That was Evgeni Kihl. Mustapha did not make it. Mustapha is a very good fighter and did a number on Romie a while back. Speaking of the Romie fight. Was the judges smoking crack? Hidemaru beat Romie every which way possible. Even Romie gave the belt to Hidemaru after the fight.

I just posted Kaew Fairtex vs Genki Yamamoto on Dailymotion.com. It’s a bit of a frankenstein file but it should be enough to satisfy the curious..

  • 21 nopstar // Sep 12, 2007 at 6:09 am

MT Boyz- Thanks for catching that!

Colargol- as always thanks for the upload. Do you think we’ll be able to get some contender asia vids from you in the near future?

  • 22 muaythaigirl // Sep 16, 2007 at 6:54 pm

these fights were really good. We should definitely request to bring the french fighters here to fight again and soon

  • 24 Ernesto // Sep 17, 2007 at 8:07 am

Mad props to Romie for being a stand up guy. Takes a real man to admit defeat.

  • 25 *******00000******* // Sep 17, 2007 at 4:06 pm

VanDenderen was a big mismatch for Malaipetch. I hoped to see the German fighter because I heard he kicks mad ass. It would be interesting to see if Malaipetch would still win.

What about Romie? didn’t he win the fight? People were saying that he won unfairly.

Pretty good write up guys! Can’t wait for the clips to come out, but I dont think that I’d do the pay per view thing…youtube anyone? haha

The fight in the parking lot was not a nice surprise cuz they advertised a ’stadium’ haha.

I know everyone loved the fights; just to give you fans a heads-up…I heard that there will be another WBC Muay Thai sanctioned event at the Las Vegas Hilton on Jan. 15. So be prepared for that major event!!

Just curious… Which other improvements should be made to the MT event? Just wondering what everyone would like to see? (matchups and etc.) Some of you guys have quite an intimate knowledge of MT and its quality as an art form.

    Best

    Em Suvanamas
