As many of you know there was a lot of  Muay Thaiaction all over the world this past few days.  The big event in the States was the Kings Birthday Matchups held a the Commerce Casino in LA.  The main event for the evening was Muay Thai veteran Malaipetch vs.  Kevin Ross.  As many of you know Kevin is a friend of MMT and is a contributor to our community.

There is a full write up of the event available on Muay Thai Authority.  A huge MMT congrats to Kevin for a well deserved victory.    The judges scored the card (49-45, 50-45 and 50-45) As always if any of you have footage please feel free to share, I’m hoping if any of you made it to the event, let us know how it went. You can check out more pics from the event here.

I came across this post fight clip of Kevin, who looked more like he had just played 9 holes of golf rather then mixing it up with Malaipetch.

I guess there were some grumblings about Malaipetch, not training hard enough for this fight.  Malaipetch is a friend of the MMT, and I will always give him props… but you make your own decisions.  I agree with Kevin’s response… you make your choices you win some, you lose some but the decision to train is a factor within your control.

  1. ROSS!!! Yo Man Im so proud of you even though I don’t know you personally. We are friends on FB but… anyway congratulations man the US will get the respect we deserve on the world stage soon enough.

    Peace.

  2. Hay Kevin where is the K-1 event you said you might be in? Is it in the states?

  3. wow! congratulations! can’t wait to see some video!

  4. I only got to watch one of the rounds before I left work, but congratulations! I’m excited to watch the rest.

  5. wow what a great performance by Kevin…. I usually pick falang apart and in defense of the thai explain low kick and punches don’t count for shit in Thai scoring but Kevin landed some nice roundhouse kicks even to the head not to mention checked many of Malaipets kicks… definately enough to cancel out Malaipets kicks but Kevin also landed some hard kness straight down the pipe big points and dumped Malaipet a couple times also.

I think Malaipet though he may be able to take it to the clinch as he tested the waters in the first but Kevin looked equally as strong if not more….

Malaipet looked gassed but it doesn’t matter weather he trained or didn’t train Kevin was the aggressor total Bangkok style and would have had gas to go all 5 even if Malaipet was ready….it may have been a closer figth but Kevin did a really really good job of this figth I am impressed to be honest.

  6. Good times in LA . It was a great turn out, the venue was packed and full of energy. The one hang up of the night occured before the Schilling v. Mulky fight. Fighter David Huerta went down some ten to fifteen seconds after taking a serious kick to the body the ended the fight and caused the loss of his MTAA National Belt. This was unfortunate seeing as how his technique was far superior to that of his challenger Mario Martinez (just my opinion). I later found out from Huerta’s family that David suffers from asthma. That kick must of set off an attack, David dropped hard and fast. All of this effected the Schilling v. Mulky fight in that the fighters were both brought out into the ring where they were left to pace and try to stay warmed up for an upward of some fifteen minutes while the medics on hand took David Huerta to the ambulance waiting outside. Needless to say, the fighters were obviously both highly agitated about the hang time. I can only imagine how something like that can affect your mental game. Both Schilling and Mulky were both called back to the locker room , and eventually (tick tock tick tock) the fighters returned to the ring to fight. Schilling was the heavy aggressor in this match as i am sure any of you who have watched would agree. Good Fight with lots of enery. Which brings us to the main event.

WOW! This was the first time I have ever seen Kevin Ross fight live. From the get go Kevin started launching clean, precise combos. It really looked as though Malaipet had grossly underestimated Kevin on all levels. Kevin stalked Malaipet all over the ring, leaving very little opening for exploitation of any sort. Very impressed with this victory Kevin. Awesome fight.

I hope to see more MT events of this caliber in Cali in the days to come. The support from the west coast MT fans was undoubtedly there.

  7. oh yeah, by the way, David Huerta is doing fine and will no doubt fight again!
