K-1 Max Predictions Contest

July 4, 2008 by nopstar

So what do you guys think?  This year’s max is a little different; they’re splitting the event up into two parts and adding a shit load of super fights.  I think it’s a little ridiculous, I think honestly think it’s to give K-1’s favourite son a fighting chance.

Who would have pegged me as the paranoid conspiracy theorist?   So we’re going to have ourselves another contest.  Here’s a pic of Siamboxer the winner of our Buakaw caption contest, sporting a shirt from Antarai.

This time around our partners Tuff have been kind enough to donate a fine assortment of apparel.  So here are the details, if you are logged in, I’ll have a record of who you chose.  If you don’t have a login this might be a good time to get off your ass and register.  After you make your pick, you’ll need to add in the comments what round you think the fighter will win.  For instance if you pick Drago to KO, Masato… in the comments you need to specify in what round (1st-Extra Round) Kow Chai Mai? (understand?)

so judging by everyone’s prediction it seems that Drago, Sato, Stevelmans and Kido don’t stand a chance.

I wonder how it must feel to be so weighted against.
I hope Kido beat Kyshenko….I don’t see the big deal about him, he really doesn’t stand out of the bunch in my opinion.

Stevelmans gonna have his hands full (poor guy) but he seems like a tough dude.

Sato surprised me in his last fight vs Sombat

Gago gets to fight Masato in the first round??….Damn! dat sux for him!!

“so judging by everyone’s prediction it seems that Drago, Sato, Stevelmans and Kido don’t stand a chance.”

That sounds like the most reasonable prediction, but personally I would love to see Gago and Stevelmans win.

  34. stinolatino on July 5th, 2008 10:27 am

Gusnark.. I agree with you, it would be awesome to see those guys win..

I’m a big fan of Stevelmans, the way he won their regional tournament was awesome.. I thought he didn’t fight as good against drago.. But hey everyone can have offnights..

But I don’t see Drago winning or even losing by decision, that fight from him vs william diender got me questioning his ability to take a punch.. Surely Masato hits harder?

  35. Gusnark on July 5th, 2008 12:44 pm

stinolatino… I think Drago is tough. Diender and Souwer stretched him out, but against other fighters he showed good chin. Remember his fight against Kraus in 2006 Final Elimination.

Anyone who didn’t see Drago vs Diender, check it here (also read info)

Does anyone know what channel the event is being shown on? I’m in Japan at the moment and I’d really like to be able to catch it, having failed to ratchet up enough money for tickets. Thanks!

  40. nopstar on July 6th, 2008 10:27 am

    Gio-

That’s no excuse! If you still can’t scrape together enough loot, it’s going to be shown on TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting System) at 9PM

    http://www.tbs.co.jp/K-1MAX/max20080707/index-j.html#cut

  41. Gusnark on July 6th, 2008 11:26 am

Guys what do you think about the line up?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m truly happy for this event, but watching some line ups makes me sigh. Watching BPP vs Sato for the 3th time and in the semis probably BPP vs Masato again.
Seeing Sato vs Masato and Buakaw vs Kyshenko would be better.

  42. stinolatino on July 6th, 2008 12:17 pm

    I agree with you.
Besides there are lots of fighters just as worthy or maybe even more so for this tournament, what are they waiting for??

Yod, Petrosyan, Lima, Chabari, Holzken, Pique, Main and maybe Diender are just a couple of names who I instantly think of..

This competition should be about talent not about countries or origin don’t you think..

  43. stinolatino on July 6th, 2008 12:21 pm

But hey yodsaenklai and petrosyan are probably instant championship contenders, if they compete those other guys, aside from buakaw and souwer don’t stand a chance:)

  44. Gusnark on July 6th, 2008 12:41 pm

I believe all mentioned fighters want to fight in K-1 MAX. Yod said himself, that he would love to fight here. Lima and Pique had their chance in Netherlands tournament this year, but Stevelmans won. Btw, Lima has an opening fight on this event. You listed a lot of Netherlands fighters, three are already in K-1 MAX.
But K-1 administration reasonably favors Japanese fighters… I hope we’ll see in the future at least Yod and Petrosyan.

  45. spydaman on July 6th, 2008 6:33 pm

K1 favors Japanese fighters and then they favor Holland fighters. Sad but true.

Adding Yod and Petrosyan on top of Buakaw and Souwer will completely annihilate Masato’s chances to win a championship. Bad enough they made the mistake of lettin the wrong Thai in (Buakaw who was invited because of his marketability, not his skills as Im sure k1 did their homework and knew that he had never won any major titles in Thailand) ….they didn’t count on him doing so well though….lol…Having said that, they’re definitely not dumb enough to allow another one (Yod – Lumpinee champion, WBC champion, Contender Asia Champion, etc) at the same time.

Let’s do the math….putting Souwer, Buakaw, Yod (3 top fighters) and Masato in the competition….would mean that Masato would most likely win his first match (vs a “can” who would be fed to him) but then he would have to face one of those 3 in the semi which would severly hinder his chances of making it to the finals, and if he did beat 1 in the semi he could forget about winning the whole thing as he would have to face one of the two left…lol.

They had a good strategy last year and took a risk….by makin him fight the defending champion (Buakaw) in the first round while he was still fresh…they would hope he would beat him, rest during an easy fight in the semi (klyshenko) and then be fresh for the final (Souwer). But it turned against them…because Buakaw did such a beautiful job on Masato’s legs that even Klyshenko almost had a chance to beat him….lol then Souwer finished him off. (Notice they didnt make the same mistake this year….lol).

Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if the winner of Klyshenko vs Kido met Masato in the semi…..and Souwer and Buakaw met in the semi which would pretty much guarantee a spot in the final for the silver wolf (Masato)….dat’s MY PREDICTION FOR THIS YEAR.

Petrosyan gave Buakaw way to many problems during their bouts and has been winning too many fights and belts for them to risk having him face Masato. Why add more hurdles in his way?…hehe
My opinion. I’m sure a few of u guys will agree. (exept for the Masato lovers of course, sorry guys!)

  47. Gusnark on July 6th, 2008 9:27 pm

“Adding Yod and Petrosyan on top of Buakaw and Souwer will completely annihilate Masato’s chances to win a championship.”

I have to agree with you. I honestly believe that.
Btw, Masato’s last year plan was only to beat Buakaw. Actually he didn’t want to fight Kyshenko and Souwer after and his legs were really injured. He said himself, that after fight with Buakaw he wanted to quit, but because of fans, team, bla bla, he faced Kyshenko then.
Well maybe Masato retires this year, which will probably open doors for another fighters.

  48. stinolatino on July 6th, 2008 11:40 pm

Let’s just hope he’ll REALLY retire then..
In fighting sports a lot of guys usually come back for the glory, money and attention, as well as the challenge to fight the new generation to prove themselves.. Usually to receive a good spanking and embarass themselves:)

With other fighters(except favorite ones like for instance Hoost) I wouldn’t give a damn except with masato the problem is the japanese would probably love it to see him try and fail every year, while he keeps blocking the door for all those other (and better) fighters..

  49. fight geek on July 7th, 2008 12:09 am

If Masato is sooo past it and should retire, what should the dude he beat fair and square last year do?

BTW I’m not saying Masato shouldn’t retire, but I think his last performance was more than good enough to give him the right to keep fighting if he wants to.

In my opinion Buakaw is the dude who has to lift his game or retire.

    :)

  50. spydaman on July 7th, 2008 2:31 am

Hey Gusnark….I was actually talkin about the “initial” plans (from K1, not Masato himself) for Masato to make it to the finals last year (that was of course my opinion and they are not based on actual facts but mostly on common sense).
I don’t believe anything about what he might have said about “just wanting to beat Buakaw”….It’s easy to say that after the fact.

Gusnark and Stinolatino, I do have to say that I disagree about making Masato retire. He might not have been successful in winning the championship for several years but he still is top 3 today in the circuit of K1 World Max. Last year’s bout vs Buakaw showed that he had true skills (which I never denied in the first place). He is the best aside from Souwer and Buakaw and until he drops down to the bottom of the barrel I don’t see any reasons for him to retire If that’s the case then Kraus, Zambidis, Drago, Sato and all the other fighters who have less of a chance to win should retire too.
He is not blocking the door for other (better) fighters.

ps:…I’m not a Masato hater….I just don’t like his management but I truly respect Masato’s courage, skill and relentlessness. To me he has the heart of a samurai……but sometimes…the people around him makes it hard for people like us to like him but we need to differentiate the fact that he’s not the one pulling the strings…..The K1 big wigs are the ones we should hate….lol.

Fight Geek, “If Masato is sooo past it and should retire, what should the dude he beat fair and square last year do? ” Let’s not forget that K1 rules were altered to help Masato’s style and hinder Buakaw’s style so the “Fair and Square” remains a very gray area. Let’s also not forget that before all Buakaw is a Nak Muay……Masato is a Japanese Kickboxer….so technically Buakaw is fighting in Masato’s realm so there again the “Fair and Square” remains a very gray area….I could really go on, but I don’t wanna turn this into another long paragraph.

“In my opinion Buakaw is the dude who has to lift his game or retire.”…….retire??? Other than Masato or Souwer….who else stands a chance to beat him???…Nobody that I can see so why should he retire?? Why should he leave all this money behind? Because a few people are unhappy with his last few fights??..lol.
    :-)

  51. Gio on July 7th, 2008 5:47 am

Cheers for the info! I don’t think there’s anything more embarassing than being in Japan and missing the K-1 entirely.

  53. Gusnark on July 7th, 2008 7:50 am

Who said that Masato should retire?
He’s a great fighter, he beat Buakaw fairly. He has all the cards to become a champion this year. I just want to see some top class Thai fighters and more Dutch fighters in MAX.
Anyways we are just couple of hours from the event.
Can’t wait to watch and discuss this shit. :)

  54. Greg W on July 7th, 2008 8:24 am

Personally, I hope Masato wins the entire event even though he will still get shit on for being Japanese.

  55. fight geek on July 7th, 2008 9:46 am

    LOL.
    OK so I admit it—I’m a Masato fanboy :)

    Spydaman . . .

    Who could beat Buakaw?
Masato has and could do it again. Souwer could.
Petrosyan could if given a chance. And Yod would if given a chance.

    :)

  56. nopstar on July 7th, 2008 1:46 pm

Gusnark….” I just want to see some top class Thai fighters ” Same here buddy!!!….lol

Greg W, I had no idea that people were shittin’ on Masato for being Japanese.

Fight Geek, I feel like u were tryin to twist my words around to prove ur point (Just a feeling though :-) …lol)?…I hope not because if u read wut I wrote it says “Other than SOUWER and MASATO, who else stands a chance to beat him???…”….It also meant in k-1 World Max (Yod and Petrosyan) are not in K1 World Max. (oh….and Buakaw fought Petrosyan in the past).

  60. fight geek on July 7th, 2008 11:54 pm

    Spydaman . . .

Sorry dude, I wasn’t trying to twist your words around intentionally.

I was just trying to say that I think Buakaw is beatable. I’ve been saying so for a while now and no-one really wants to believe it.

I’m not saying he’s not talented . . . I just think he’s not fighting smart, or fighting to his potential. And he hasn’t done so for a while.

(I know Yod and Petrosyan aren’t in K1max . . . that was sorta my point . . . some people are saying Masato should retire and let these new guys in . . . my point is Masato is fighting better than Buakaw imo and therefore shouldn’t Buakaw be the one to make way for the younger fighters?)

Anyway, hope I didn’t piss you off.

The bottom line for me is I’ve been disappointed with Buakaw’s attitude/training for about a year and a half now . . . whilst my respect for Masato has continued to grow.

  61. spydaman on July 8th, 2008 12:06 am

fight geek, “hope I didn’t piss you off. “..No u didn’t..but I respect that much more for inquireing. :-)

Buakaw is definitely beatable (sad to say!)

“I’m not saying he’s not talented . . . I just think he’s not fighting smart, or fighting to his potential. And he hasn’t done so for a while.” I couldn’t agree wit u more.

I don’t think neither of those fighters should retire…..but on the other hand, Souwer and Zambidis might wanna start lookin’ that direction as they haven’t done anythin special in quite some time. Is it me or does it seem like I haven’t heard from kohiruimaki in a minute. Did he retire????

  62. nopstar on July 8th, 2008 7:20 am

    Alas…

We’re going to have to roll the contest into the next round as only 2 people (unregistered) correctly predicted a Sato KO.
