JWP vs. Madsua

May 28, 2009 by nopstar

The Evolution 16 fights from April have finally surfaced, about a month lag… not bad considering how far Australia is from everything.  Madsua (Tiger Punch) was a trainer on Season 1 of the Contender Asia, and a possible 2nd season Contender.

Thanks to Stack for the upload, I was looking forward to this fight, by all the accounts it was supposed to be quite the clinch clinic.  I have to say I’m a little disappointed, yes Madsua is clearly dominant in the clinch, but everything seemed incredibly scrappy.

Speaking of scrappy, I’ve got nothing but respect for JWP, but what’s up with his hands lately?  I know he started off as boxer, but any semblance of that is long gone.  I’m not sure what those rail punches are all about.  I really noticed them when he was fighting Yod in the final.   Granted in MuayThai we “punch” we don’t really box per se…   Buakaw has stepped up his boxing… but JWP’s boxing seems to have diminished with age?

JWP just is not the same anymore, unfortunately. He looks like he’s in poor condition and his fighting has slumped because of it.

JWP isn’t slipping in my opinion. If anything his maturity in ring craft has drastically improved given what he did to Wright and others. I am no fan of his excuses he sometimes has but I must give credit where it is due: he has improved. JWP seems to have a little more patience these days and picks his spots much better than even 2 years ago. After as many fights as he’s had some wear and tear is obviously going to show but overall I’d regard Parr as a much improved fighter than what he once was in terms of ring IQ.

I don’t support everything the man says or does obviously but Parr does deserve imo a smattering of credit for tightening his game up somewhat. I don’t like his overall approach but that very honestly is a 100% subjective opinion of no one but me. That said I do believe Parr has made significant improvements even now.

To speak to Nop’s observation on JWP’s windmilling that’s something he has always done to varying extents. BTW Parr has always been a kickboxer/thaiboxer. The boxing was secondary to Muay Thai where he started and where he remains.

I always considered JWP somewhat overrated. He is a tuff fighters and experienced. He just can’t seem to beat the Thai’s on a consistent basis. I do give him his props as far as being a fighter who was fought the best of his generation.

JWP looked more relaxed in this bout, usually he looks stiff. Madusa was obviously superior in the clinch and dominated the fight with it. A couple times (9:24 in the first video, and 5:39 in the second) JWP grabs the ropes to balance himself so he’s not thrown. JWP didn’t throw any elbows which didn’t make a lot of sense. Isn’t that the way to neutralize the clinch? His boxing looked more like Thai style boxing than his previous style which was faster and had longer combinations .

JWP is significant in that he is one of the first international muay thai stars, and should be credited like others (such as Ramon Dekker, Ronnie Green etc.) with opening up foreigners to Thai boxing and proving that foreigners can fight.

The first 3 rounds I actually think were very technical from both fighters.

The last 2 were messy for sure but madsua’s clinch and take-down’s were awsome.

He was clearly distrupting JWP who i think could have performed much better otherwise, or on a different night.

JWP was really good early in the fight.

  7. Stack on May 28th, 2009 7:26 pm

JWP is a bit after Ronnie’s era and I would never put him side by side with Dekkers in any respect.

Thanks Stack for the upload, it was a good fight.. I don’t like Madsua I think he’s pretty crappy. His clinch is good but the rest of him sucks

JWP is not slipping…He’s still going strong..this fight is reli close(if we ignore the splendid MT throws..impossible..)..but I do think that Madsua, being the trainer, had more time to look out for Jwp’s weakness and is playing against him…
this match, Madsua reli made the correct bet as his clinch and throw was so good that it made it seem like Jwp has no defence or watsover against it..tat’s y madsua won it… Jwp has good skills & experience…
ok, he shd hv elbowed more, punched better coz Madsua is obviously the kind who dreads punching game like against yod..overall, good fight from both!

I think Madsua was really sloppy the last round. I think JWP would beat dat ass in a rematch! also JWP’s boxing has gotten really good. Thanks for the upload guys! Oh…and I still pick JWP to upset Buakaw next month! The dude is a pioneer in this sport!

JWP got owned. hes not a muat thai ledg in my eyes not with that tec, more of a small angry Ozy thats got respectablly far.

June 26, Montego bay, Jamaica. Buakow vs JWP, that fight will tell us if JWP still has it or not. I doubt that he will win, lets just see if he can stay competitive against the white lotus.
JWP, definitely gets my respect; however, his skills are questionable. Don’t think that he is top 10 international fighter.

  13. sudan on May 28th, 2009 9:23 pm

He can’t defend the clinch, that makes no sense.

  14. tong po on May 29th, 2009 2:11 am

Props to both fighters. JWP tried to push it, but kept getting tangled up in the clinch.

were JWP & madsua friends in the contender house? maybe thats why not many elbows were thrown.

I thought the take-downs got a little ridiculous after the 3rd round, I don’t mind a few every so often, but it just felt more like a wrestling match. lol at one point madsua even attempted a rugby tackle.

Anybody else thrown by how fast the music was in the first round? Gave it a 5th round feel, imo

Pretty boring fight. It’s obvious Tum didn’t take the fight very seriously in training.

If I heard the commentary correctly, this fight was before the Zambidis JWP fight?

  18. Jay_53 on May 29th, 2009 7:46 am

yeah about one month before it

the only reason JWP has been hyped so much is cus his name and cus hes an aussie. i can see no other reason.

  24. Stack on June 2nd, 2009 10:01 pm

I think JWP deserves some credit. Not as much as he gives himself obviously but the guy has accomplished quite a lot like it or not. I know JWP bad mouths a lot of opponents on the internet or whatever and for whatever reason seems to have an active hatred for some of them like Scerri.

I’d rate it as a 50/50 proportion. JWP does deserve a lot of credit for what he has accomplished. While it isn’t legendary it is pretty impressive. His body of work is impossible to ignore unless you’re a 100% hater. The hype doesn’t match what JWP’s actually done imo and as I said before his excuse making and basically bashing other fighters gets tiresome. Still Parr has done a lot in Muay Thai and no matter what I or anyone else think of him his laurels are his.

Don’t get me wrong I’m not his biggest fan but to view him objectively Parr is no doubt a very accomplished competitor. The rest I could live without but that’s just my opinion.

  25. czh25 on June 3rd, 2009 7:40 am

I respect JWP for being a humble fighter with good skills…He was a funny guy when he came to the gym tat I trained during contender asia 1..friendly and humourous guy…
JWP deserves due respect for being one of the few farangs who competed in Thailand for a considerable period to get his name heard…fighting in Thailand with full thai rules is very different from modified rules of no elbows or shortened rounds etc…and to get your name heard is even tougher…
    Respect!
