MyMuayThai friend Jeff Dojillo has put together a short video on the fights down in LA a short time ago. The bouts were solid with Rungravee Saisapara, Kevin Ross, Joe Schilling, Romie Adanza, Kaoklai, and Sagetdao Petchapayathai amongst others.
As Muay Thai in America grows, which its looking like it will, it is going to be interesting to see what our image will be. Will it be similiar to our global image or will it be different in some respect?
I enjoyed this documentary. Hope you like it too.

Saiyok Petchapayathai is Sagetdao’s long lost brother, not to be confused with minor spelling/editorial errors.

THEY DONT WANNA BRING THOSE GUYS OVER TO THAILAND WHERE THEY WILL DESTROY ALL THE THAIS.
i laughed.
February 1, 2012 at 9:11 am
and right on time SE chimes in with a well thought out argument and further reminds everyone why he is the greatest nak muay of all time
February 1, 2012 at 11:31 pm
just pointing out what you said. the video pretty much speaks for itself. you and joes comments speak for themselves. but i would be very defensive too if i had said that shit and it was on video….
cant wait for schilling to fight marcus.
February 2, 2012 at 4:35 am
SE, must be pretty lonely in that basement.
February 2, 2012 at 9:05 pm
So you’re pointing it out for everyone because they needed to hear it from you just in case they didn’t pick up on it in the video? Ya I said it and meant exactly what I said. “PROMOTERS ON MOST SHOWS WON’T BRING IN THE BEST AMERICANS BECAUSE THEY WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE GUYS LOOK GOOD”. I didn’t say they don’t wana bring us over cause we will dominate everyone smart guy, pay attention. Maybe if they’d bring you over you could show us all how to fight properly.
February 2, 2012 at 10:40 pm
dudebra,,,,, you said, “they dont wanna bring me over there, they dont wanna bring joe schilling over there[to thailand cus you will make them look bad]. ”
im the one that needs to teach everyone how to fight properly when you have all of thailand shaking their boots? m’k
its obvious what youre implying….and how much DO YOU cost?
LOL
there are, in fact, fighters in mma with predominantly muay thai styles that have better form than you and are more controlled with their strikes and not just yoshiro sato[your clone imo] type fighters who just keep throwing. jose aldo kinda comes to mind first.
maybe comments like that is why saenchai had to call you out. and sagetdao had to get a decisive victory. i think thailand did even better and brought you their best. so i dont quite understand your comments about thailand being scared of their reputation being hurt by having their best fight you.
joe schillings comment when he rolled his eyes when he mentioned people thinking thai fighters are the best was the most disrespectful comment to the sport i have seen in many many years. and shows absolutely no respect from where the art came from. like fuckin a, why the fuck cant they be the best they created the fucking art many fucking years ago and used it effectively for their own livelyhood[even to this fucking day] yet americans are so fucking full of pride that they scoff at the fact thailand is the best at THEIR OWN sport. americans have been doing this for like 30 years or so max compared to thailands, what, like 200+ years plus a need for the art to survive? WOW. get a fucking clue? im american too. his attitude, disrespect and rage is geared for mma. he doesnt seem to care at all about respecting the country from where the art that he is exploiting came from or honoring the country that gave him the art to begin with. he just seem to care about the image of america and himself rage fighting every thai opponent.
February 3, 2012 at 2:57 am
i think he just wants a hug!! hahahahaha
February 3, 2012 at 3:29 am
i like hugs
February 3, 2012 at 9:54 am
DUDE BRA,who said anything about Thailand, it was a generalized statement about foreign promoters in general and I never said they would be shaking in there boots. I was saying they bring the mediocre fighters because of a sure thing as opposed to bringing over the top Americans who they know will bring it. As for Joe he was stating that it pisses him off that American’s don’t get any respect. No one even came close to saying or even thinking that we are the best. Why do you have to have a condescending asshole remark to every other post on this forum. Are you some sort of expert critique that just feels the need to spread your gospel to the world and show us all the error of our ways?
February 3, 2012 at 11:55 am
I’m actually tired of Seeing Kevin fight Thais, he’s already fought like 5 of them, let’s get some real action going. Hot steamy farang vs. farang action that is….Ross Vs. Alamos, Ross vs. Pinca, also Ross Vs. Harrison. it was disappointing to see greskiewicz get Harrison just to get demolished….Someone make that shit happen

Schilling To Face Top Contender Simon Marcus
Feb. 25
Beating Kaoklai so quickly was lucky if you ask me, He also had a massive weight advantage by the looks of it.
February 1, 2012 at 6:15 am
Thais are the best in the world at Muay Thai, there is no disputing that. When their top fighters take on top fighters from other countries they consistently win, even while giving up weight. Of course, weight classes above 155 can be competitive with Thais, because any opponent they face will be out of shape. But if we’re talking skill level, there is no comparison.
On the other hand, in my opinion the level of Muay Thai in the states has stepped up considerably in the last few years. I think Schilling, Mulkey, Ross, and many others are good fighters, and I’m interested to see how they would fare against top fighters from England and France. I don’t think that the West will ever be as good as the Thais at their own game, strictly because of the socio-economic differences, but hey I’d love to be proven wrong :)
February 3, 2012 at 3:02 am
I believe there may be exceptions at a few weight classes in regards to fighters from the West possibly being better than Thais. In general, I do agree Thais will continue to dominate in the near future especially in the lighter weight classes. I also would love to see a Champions League/Tournament..
love how you are able to articulate your thoughts without being a douche (like someone else on this thread) hahahaha
February 3, 2012 at 11:22 pm
Thanks! I try :)

Muaythai is on decline in Thailand and has been for the past 15 years or more. This is because as the country develops Muaythai’s traditional function (allowing kids in poverty to make a bit of money for themselves or their family) is no longer needed. Muaythai is on the increase everywhere else in the world and so I suspect in another 10 years Thai’s might get overtaken in all but the lighter weight classes.
Already beyond 70kgs farangs are now going Toe-to-toe with the top Thais
February 1, 2012 at 8:58 pm
Thats because after 70 KG the talent level in Thailand is pretty weak. It drops off after lightweight, but there are still really good fighters up to 70 KG’s.
Even at 70KG or close to it guys like Khem, Sudsakorn, Saiyok, Yodsainklai, Buakaw etc… win WAY more often against foreigners than they do or did against Thai’s.
Lol, Saiyok has won like 30 fights in a row against foreigners. I bet he doesn’t have a streak 1/4 that long against Thai’s.
Yod was similar until recently, now he’s getting old. Sudsakorn has about 20 wins or more against foreigners in Muay Thai and has lost just once I think. Same goes for Khem.
Thai’s are still #1, and every other country is a distant 2nd.

Must say I agree with buu to some degree:
Economic conditions drive many young nak muay to immersion and dedication in a sport at a tender age; much like a young adult here does with academic or professional pursuits. I agree that spiritually and culturally there are tremendous differences, however a young person completely immersed in competition and training at that age will have a technique, athleticism and competition IQ that is hard to match. At this point you are fighting a mental game, and they have so much ring experience that even if you are bigger, stronger, faster…that person is in the “zone” way earlier. However, many would argue the advantage is purely experience. However as Thailand grows as an emerging economy, how many kids will choose this path over the chance for what we take for granted (get a job, go to school, get a profession)? MT is a hard life, and the training regimen is anything but scientific, in fact some argue that fighter youth mask the inefficiencies inherent in it-hence the short competitive life span of a nak muay.
With globalization, we see many foreigners training in Thailand, even bringing back traditional training to their homeland and combining it with more scientific S&C. Many foreigners immerse themselves just as much as Thais, and with that experience, change will come..it already has. There are many great non-Thai nak muay who -to quote a Thai-”…”he look Thai”
SO Yes I do think we will see some demographic changes in the competition landscape, but hey thats human nature.
Look at other global sports (soccer, F1) and despite origins, you always see stars breakthrough the ranks. It`s just human nature

Well said

Great, informative and entertaining video, thanks for posting it Matt.
I enjoyed how it portrayed American Muay Thai as having matured to A level that they are able to compete on a professional level with some of the best from Thailand.A huge step for American MuayThai!

“That’s real Muay Thai to me…it’s not just getting in the ring and fighting, it’s how you are outside of the ring as well as you are inside of the ring, showing respect!!” Those words came out of Kevin Ross’ mouth and it shows that he understands the art more than a lotta ppl I have heard speak when asked the question “What does Muay Thai represents for you?”. He also did mention that “The Thais are on TOP of the sports and those are the ppl I want to fight” Which shows that he aknowledges the superiority of the Thais (as a whole) in the art of Muay Thai. On the other hand Joe Shilling did roll his eyes while saying “SUPPOSEDLY, The Thais are so much better than everybody else” which did convey a lil sarcasm and one may even see it as disrespectful if they based their whole opinion on that one sentence as opposed to the interesting things he spoke about prior to that blunder. SE did make some valid points. I just don’t think Ross himself was being disrespectful, but I will say that I believe that because of the culture differences between USA and Thailand it seems that (a lot of) Americans (and other countries as well, Im sure) approach Muay Thai with a very macho/MMA attitude. Now MMA enthusiast, please don’t bother trying to justify yourselves. Im just speaking in a generalized sense. Kev…I hope they keep feeding you the best of the best of Thailand because you are at the moment the best representation of what Muay Thai in the US has to offer which means you are the vessel which allows EVERYONE to gauge the level of Muay Thai in the US.
On another note….I think Saketdao was a great opponent for you…but I wonder why would they put Kaoklai (who obviously has had one foot out the door for a few years now) again Joe Schilling???….Also, even though Lansuanlek was whupping Romie’s ass in the early round before he got caught with the Shoryuken, Im still wonder why they would pick a virtually unknown (well unknown to me at least) thai fighter to face him?…Were the Thais underestimating your two compatriots???
February 3, 2012 at 8:28 am
LOL @ the shoryuken.
romies shorykuens aint no joke.
February 3, 2012 at 8:47 am
it was a level 3 super shoryuken since he got his super meter filled up real quick by Lansuanlek’s knees.
February 4, 2012 at 9:17 am
That’s what Lansuanlek said!!

Good video but some come off as dickish. The thai’s dont only think we suck cuz of our skills but because of our attitudes. Dropping F-bombs about how pissed off you are that we arent mentioned in the 3 countries is partly the reason we get minimal props when in Thailand. The Thais respect a good fighter and a humble person regardless of where he’s from. Dutch fighters are great kicboxers the French are the best Thai boxers in the farang world the difference is the swag and level of respect they show to the sport. Any fighter over 160 looking to fight the best need to look to France England or the NL for a challenge. Paramaribo Suriname is also a spot to find good fights.
February 4, 2012 at 8:01 pm
One thing I learned in Thailand is that every country has it’s share of humble fighters and douche bags. By the end of my time there it was impossible for me to be racist because there was always an exception to any stereotype I wanted to believe, whether positive or negative. I think the trainers at my gym had been there long enough to recognize the same..
February 5, 2012 at 7:42 pm
I agree…..Australia is also a good place to look. Japan is a good place (for kickboxing) if you’re only looking for a good pay day!!! A lot of Western european countries are really developing their Muay Thai as well (Ukraine comes to mind). It might take several years…but I’m sure the US will definitely make their way up among the best in the world. Is it me or is the Canadian scene really starting to make a name for itself. I’m definitely a Simon Marcus fan so I’ll have to say that I will be rooting for him but good luck to both fighters.
February 6, 2012 at 2:09 am
