Glass Chins

September 25, 2008 by nopstar

When I was watching the Jongsanan, Superlek fight, all I could keep thinking was that everyone of those blows would have put me to sleep.  I was thinking about my ability to take a punch, and I have to admit I’ve got a pretty shit chin.  I’ve never been knocked out cold, but I’ve come dangerously close even with head gear on.  Actually that’s a lie, when I was 10 I ran into a tree (bright kid) knocked my shit out cold.  In fact I had a really vivid dream of lying in a warm grassy field.  When I came to I had a splitting headache and was slightly disappointed I was no longer in the field.

Did any of you catch the Amir Khan fight?  If you didn’t here you go.  On a side note why did Amir’s camp put him in with a fighter with such a high KO ratio?  They had to know there boy had a nopstar chin?

I came across this article today on MMAJunkie.com about Good Chins vs. Bad Chins, in short it’s genetic… not a whole lot you can do about it.   Since i’ve been spending a lot of time with boxers, it’s become so apparent to me that Nak Muay’s are really open to neck snapping head shots.  It’s incredible how much movement is required when your boxing.  It’s tough to switch to box mode for me… I’m sure the boxers think I’m some sort of zombie.

When was the last time you were knocked out? Any vivid dreams?

Haven’t been knocked out yet, but have been rung bad enough a couple times where one more little tap would have brought the darkness.

*vid doesn’t work on FF or IE

MMA people discussing quality of chins and boxing in general is horrible.

IMO it’s equivelant on visiting a sumo stable for diet tips: not a good idea.

I was holding pads for a new guy who didn’t really know wtf he was doing once – I received a knee to the snout, put me down like a sack of shit. Total darkness. I just remember waking up with three people over me and a face full of blood. It wasn’t broken fortunately, just swollen. One of the hazards of pad holding for the noobs.

Got knocked out cold earlier this year . . . my own stupid fault . . . entered the ring in a very f*cked up mental state.

Shit happens. Live and learn and all that :)

Only had 3 fights in the ring so far. Never been knocked out thankfully. Slightly blurred vision once from a solid blow but that was it. Weirdly I was just wondering about glass chins within the last few days.

the one time i was knocked out wasn’t even in the ring or on the street…fairly embarrasing actually.

i was at a local punk/hardcore show and was standing on the edge of the “pit” not paying attention to everyone jackie chan-ning about 2 feet infront of me. my buddy and i were talking and my head was turned to the right and this monstrous, unshowered, pimple ridden 6’0 200+ lb meatsack hauled off and cracked me on the right above my left ear. i wasn’t sure if that knocked me out or if my head bouncing off the wood floor that did the trick.

we have this on video as well, it is about 7 years old so im not sure if it is floating around…in the video ( i don’t remember shit after hearing my buddy go ‘hey, heads up’) i immediately sat up and put my head down. the kid who whacked me came over to apologize and i started getting very angry with him telling him to ‘leave me the fuck alone’ which is very uncharacteristic of me.

my friends contacted my parents and brought me to the hospital which i still don’t remember. i suffered from short term memory loss, angry mood swings and all around hilarious quote syndrome. that night i was angrily asking “why my hair was cut this way,” “why am i wearing shorts and a tshirt,” “what is my exgirlfriend doing right now” etc in my screwy mental state. it was an ugly situation.

in the ring, i’ve taken some pretty flush shots on my chin and neck and have weathered those storms thankfully. we do neck strengthening exercises religiously at my gym and get punished for leaving our chins up during sparring / shadowboxing. we do the classic weight-on-a-rope-bite-and-lift and neck raises on the edge of the ring. tennis ball under the chin while shadowboxing is a really good tool as well. all crude but very effective.

I was nocked out about 5 weeks ago. It was on “sparring friday” hehe. One on the nose (which was broken after that) and one on the chin (wasn’t very hard). I blackouted imidiately for 1-2 seconds, than I was able to open up my eyes again and saw all that blood running down my body. Way too tough experience ^^

Dan what the heck were you holding for? I’ve never had a knee come remotely close to my face while holding pads.

  9. nopstar on September 25th, 2008 5:17 pm

    Jake-

“what is my exgirlfriend doing right now!” I’m sorry, but that is effing hilarious! Basically weird curmudgeon meets tourettes… excellent.

It really makes you wonder what parts of your brain get’s effed up from taking one too many on the dome.

Hopefully your all good now though…

This guy was super tall, and a beginner like I mentioned. It was a side knee that just went out of control.

Ive been hit pretty bad especially against pro boxers. Been rung a few times but never out cold. been hit and the second after just be like “wth hit me?” i remember one time at one of my fights my friend called me mark hunt cause the kid was hitting me so much but i kept pushing the pace to the point where it disheartened the kid i eventually mollywhopped him. my boxing coach hates watching me fight cause i take a lot of punishment at times, but thats nothing to brag about. i have more confidence though cause im not afraid to get hit and i know i can take a hit. i also know i can give a hit. im also the type of fighter that has to get hit a few times to realize im in a fight.

I’ve been put down twice from getting hit in the back of the head from heavyweight boxers, but not out cold.

Something about my misshapen skull keeps me from going out. But it doesn’t seen to help my nose from getting broken…

    To each his own.

Its easier to get rocked from the shots that you don’t see coming. I’ve only been knocked down by body shots- one was actually from box sparring with our very own Jongsanan back in the day. Sometimes I do get hit hard in the head, but I usually weather that storm ok, but get headaches.

    lol Stack you are right.

    moshing is idiotic.

I got knocked out 3 years ago by a 300lbs security guard who lifted me over his head and slammed me on the floor face first then landed on me with his weight. i woke up to him still being on top pf me saying, “you still wanna fuck with me?” then he threw me out da club like uncle phil throws jazz out of his mansion.

    Great stories guys.
Can’t take a good punch. Never been knocked out cold.
I love technical fight, never liked the idea of crude fight (who is more tough). I like sparring, bot not the real thing in the ring. Not that I’m scared, it’s just not the thing for me.
And the punches on the nose and solar plexus pisses me off.

  16. SE on September 25th, 2008 9:58 pm

    LOL @ the pic nopstar…

and yeah nose punches i hate as well as hooks to the side of my head or anywhewre behind my ear. been hit with massive combos. but never a solid chin shot so dont know.

  17. jake on September 26th, 2008 2:44 am

yeah nop, my friends being the vultures that they are took advantage of that girlfriend comment and kept telling me she cheated on me while we dated. with their kindly guidance, i proceeded to call her house 4 or 5 times at 1am screaming at her and her mother. nice life.

HAHAHA SE @ that fresh prince reference. pure gold.

thankfully i have figured out taking all my shots on the forehead is better than my general face area. after sparring on saturdays with the boxers, my forehead looks like a bruised fruit. totally growing the hair out to make up for that.

never been knocked out but I’ve seen peach fuzz which is also pretty cool. Almost like someone turns on the on the tv to a channel with no signal, only the static is pink, white, and black. I saw it just for a brief second but it tripped me out after the fight.

I was in a fight, outnumbered, and I guess I got hit from the Side, on the side of my left eye, where Cuts usually happens in Boxing! A Cut formed and I had to be stitched with 5 stiches. I remember looking at the Main guy, he was screaming some Trash Talk, and then I must have blacked out for 5 Miliseconds, cause when I got out of the black I was wobley and My head was hanging down, I knew I was in a fight, but I also felt like Lying down, and going to sleep, Plus I babbeld something Incohearent! But Luckylie my Friend saw me and pulled me out of the Caos! So I was Out but not down, but still DONE That night!!

  20. ShadyEskimo on September 26th, 2008 6:08 pm

And then I must have blacked out(As a result of The Punch from the Side) Sorry I didnt Specify.
