Episode 14 – The Last SemiFinals

April 21, 2008 by nopstar

Damn that was a fight… way closer then I thought it was going to be. I can’t believe I still have to say this but don’t post any spoilers! I know the finals air tonight and most of you already know what the results are but, please don’t ruin it for the rest of us.

Per our standard operating procedure, if you haven’t watched the episodes don’t read any further… spoilers ahead.

I don’t think Dzhabar reads MMT but if any of you know him or see him on a regular basis, please let him know MMT gives him mad props. I know he wanted it bad… he’s young, has heart and motivation. It’s tough to keep a guy like that down.

I was surprised at how fast he was, it seemed to me he had about a half step on JWP in the speed dept.

JWP, nice fight well done. Congrats getting into the finals. I’ve got a bunch of questions for you but I think it’s best if we save it for an interview.

I’m kind of bummed…this has been one of the most enjoyable 40 min. of my week for the past couple of months. I know their getting ready to pull off a second season, which I’m anxiously awaiting. It’s going to be a tall order keeping up with the success of this first season. Anyway hat off to the folks

Is it just me or do their shorts look like they’re made one size too big? They keep pulling up their shorts…

  2. nopstar on April 22nd, 2008 12:22 am

    horc00-

It’s sort of Thai thing… like how ball players like pull down their shorts. If you watch any Thai fighters you’ll see as they get further into the rounds, the higher the shorts will get.

Some fighters start with maybe just one leg, it’s sort of saying… “see this?”

Sanchai, Buakaw, Anuwat all come to mind…

The benefits are mostly psychological, wet shorts add friction on thighs, by pulling them up it takes the wet shorts off your thighs…

Just like swimmers shave their legs for big events, not because it will reduce drag, but because it makes them “feel” faster.

  3. nimrod69 on April 22nd, 2008 12:36 am

hi nop, what is your comments on this fight? do you think JWP deserve to win ?
personally, i felt jabbar won it.

  4. colargol on April 22nd, 2008 1:33 am

Best fight of the show for me. I’ve gotta say though: yes, the fight was very competitive but I disagree with people who thought that it was super-close and that it could have gone either way. I think this often happens when the underdog performs better than expected.
Anyway, Dzhabar was great, but JWP was the only possible winner.

  5. A5YF K on April 22nd, 2008 2:07 am

I have to say i agree with nimrod69, i felt that Dzhabar won the fight also.
For me i felt that he was more techincal and did more damage. Ok he was not the aggressor but was definately the smarter fighter….
Whatever happened Dzhabar did really well against JWP and like Nop said he is young and we will defo see more of him in the future. I look forward to seeing his next fight….

  6. HighRevinMT on April 22nd, 2008 5:35 am

Dzhabar is pretty swift; wish he would have been more aggressive earlier. I agree with the others in that Askerov was more technical but JWP dictated the tone the entire fight. I know JWP is pushing over 30 now, but he is def. looking slower than his opponents. Dzhabar could have def. won this fight if he pressed him.

Anyone know when season 2 is scheduled to start? It’s been a great series and it is often my highlight on Weds night.

  7. spydaman on April 22nd, 2008 5:45 am

I thinkthe figh was one of the best fights of the season too. I really didn’t care for either of the two fighters b4, but after watchin this episode, I gained a new level of respect for this 2 dudes. I almost cried when the decision was made and Dzhabar dropped on his knees and cried in dissapointment. I think he did great.

I disagree wit Nop sayin that Dhazbar was a “half ste”on JWP in speed. I think Dhzabar was “light years” faster than JWP. The two in my opinion were equal in the skills area, JWP just kept his weight on the front leg throughout the fight and that’s why he won. TWO very good fighters…they both deserved it.

JWP surprised me…I thought for sure he wouldn’t be able to keep the pace…but he did great. Great job man.

The finalist are just who I knew it was gonna be, though I wanted Naruepol vs Yodsanklai in the final (but they made sure that wouldn’t happen). If u pay attention to the match ups it was designed for a JWP vs Yod 2.

    Can’t wait for season 2

  8. A5YF K on April 22nd, 2008 6:23 am

“If u pay attention to the match ups it was designed for a JWP vs Yod 2.”
Exactly what i was thinking spydaman!!!

  9. spydaman on April 22nd, 2008 6:31 am

Glad to see people have been payin attention….lol.

  10. Josh on April 22nd, 2008 9:04 am

Man, how depressing. I’ve grown so attached to this show and looked forward to it every week. Definitely the only “reality” show I’ve enjoyed. I’ve liked all of the fighters and will miss their weekly antics. I am looking forward to season 2 but it won’t be the same without the usual cast!!

  11. spydaman on April 22nd, 2008 9:08 am

U never know….it might turn out to be even better.

  12. Josh on April 22nd, 2008 10:21 am

Yeah, maybe so. I hope. But it was more than a show about Muay Thai. These guys had so much respect and you could see how they really were instead of just hearing about their fights. I got kind of used to seeing them interact. So much better than TUF, basically a bunch of idiots in a pissing contest.

  13. Gio on April 22nd, 2008 10:38 am

Brilliant fight, though. Props to both of them.

  14. tong po on April 22nd, 2008 11:37 am

Very good fight! Props to Jabba for fighting a very smart fight with JWP, unfortunately, Jabba didn’t win. Big ups to JWP for his victory against such a tough opponent. I agree that Yod v. JWP 2 was inevitable.

  15. TexMT on April 22nd, 2008 11:49 am

I had JWP in R1, perhaps a draw or maybe a slight edge to Dzhabar in R2, close with a slight edge to JWP in R3, then R4 to JWP. I think Dzhabar could’ve pulled it out if he had a strong R4 (especially with R’s 2 & 3 being so close). JWP dictated the pace and Dzhabar evaded for a good 20 secs while JWP kept coming forward. I think that stuff has a big affect on the judges. Good fight for both. I came off respecting Dzhabar much more – much more of a technical fight than I expected from him.

  16. I on April 22nd, 2008 2:44 pm

What a fight, what a fight. I have to agree with a few of you that say that it was set up for JWP to fight Yod… They eliminated Naruepol, JWP COULD’VE lost to Jabba (imo), and when they had to chose the people to fight each other, they chose Yod to fight Sean and JWP to fight Jabba… isn’t that just a little suspecious?

Besides that, I loved the show!

  17. TwoThumbs on April 22nd, 2008 3:44 pm

As much as I like JWP and as much as I loved the finale (!!!), i agree with the leadup to a Yod-JWP finals. During chicken pox week, JWP missed the first 2nd round matchups and it went to Naroupoel and Yod. In a typical reality tv show jwp would have been elimintated for illness. ah well.

  18. nimrod69 on April 22nd, 2008 5:53 pm

any news on how are the rest of them doing? fighters like Trevor, Alan and Pitu Sans …etc

  19. Frank on April 22nd, 2008 8:12 pm

Trev is doing well. His last (only since Naruepon) fight was a 1st round KO against Steve Neuman (GER). I think he has a fight planned for June, and possibly one with JWP in the fall.

As far as the shorts go, yes I agree they’re far too big on even the the tallest guys. It would drive me insane. I like mine mid-quad, and these are down to most knees.

  20. koolkick on April 22nd, 2008 10:48 pm

That was a gr8 fight. List of best fights in my view in this season includes,
    1. Yod vs Bruce
    2. Yod vs sean
    3. Dzhabar vs Soren
    4. Jwp vs Zidov
    5. Pitu vs Yukay
Altogether the show was really gr8. Will surely miss it on Wednesdays.
Any idea on when they’re starting the next season.

  21. The Surgeon on April 22nd, 2008 11:14 pm

This fight worried me, if this is how he fought against Jabba, how is he gonna beat Yod. Man, I really hope JWP can pull off a win against Yod, I really want to see JWP win it all. He is such a family man and i really hope he gets the 150k for all the time effort he has put in and done for the sport.

  22. greghow on April 23rd, 2008 12:40 am

Finals Yod vs JWP. Anyone surprised???

    Didn’t think so…

  23. TwoThumbs on April 23rd, 2008 2:55 am

i’d like to see Yoddy take home the USD150,000 … Cos his family life seems poor. Build a house for his mum and all. :)

  24. darknest on April 23rd, 2008 4:10 am

50 mins and im watching the final at long last ill record and up asap

  25. ShadyEskimo on April 23rd, 2008 7:19 am

Almost over NOOOOO. Let there be a 2 Season, what the Hell will i Do on wedensdays. And Thanks again Nop for this Site.
    Greghow: Not surprised
Spyda: I hope there will be a 2nd season, and that it will be even better than the 1st. In the Final I have to say Yod, even though I wish JWP could get his Revenge from that last Defeat. But I, Like this fight, Dont want any of them to loose. So saad to Dzhabar Cry but he went out like a REAL MAN. Dont know about the Decision, someone must know.

  26. ShadyEskimo on April 23rd, 2008 7:20 am

oh…the “people” I’m talkin about are Darknest, A5YF K, Nop and all the kind people who have taken time outta their “probably” busy schedule so that we may enjoy this show. One Luv

  33. Singro on April 23rd, 2008 12:11 pm

Actually, gotta tell you this. Was watching ep 13 at school, when some friends of mine gathered round my laptop to see what I was watching. I filled them in on what the show was about and gave them brief explanation of what muay thai is, and they were hooked! Now I watch the episodes at school with them, they’re almost as eager as me about when the final episode is out. Haha.

And none of them have any knowledge about muay thai what so ever. If you said muay thai to them they’d think it was some kind of asian wok…

  34. darknest on April 23rd, 2008 12:17 pm

i have a wok i call muay thaiabd a soup pan i call brother :P

  35. spydaman on April 23rd, 2008 12:21 pm

  40. Shane on April 23rd, 2008 12:34 pm

and by the way, what the hell happened to the contender website? after every episode they tell you to go to that damn site and there’s absolutely nothing on there!

  41. Singro on April 23rd, 2008 12:36 pm

But I agree with spyda and Shady. As I have stated earlier, lots of regards to the ones bringing the episodes to us. Your work is very very appreciated =)

Im not a computer Wiz, so I dont really know what to do or anything, So eh………….Help!!

  56. djmattyd on April 23rd, 2008 1:18 pm

On my score card I had Dzhabar only losing the first and tying the third and fourth winning the fifth. I guess maybe editing and shot selection might have colored my impressions of the fight but over all it was a great fight.

  57. ShadyEskimo on April 23rd, 2008 1:43 pm

    djmattyd
Oh yeah forgot about the editing, But was the semi´s Edited? Cant remeber, but too busy to check it out right now.

Shane you will be in 30 mins bro

  60. djmattyd on April 23rd, 2008 1:59 pm

    shady,

Well I don’t think really much if any time from the match was cut out. But the different cameras have very different views of whats going on so by what the editor decides to cut to he can really affect the look of the flow of the fight.

  61. ShadyEskimo on April 23rd, 2008 2:08 pm

    djmattyd
Youre Right, So right. We should have an Angel option on the DVD release. He He.

It took a long time but the link loaded via Quicktime, but it’s running super slow and eventually freezes. Any ideas?

  73. Antti on April 23rd, 2008 7:32 pm

Jabba and JWP was indeed a cracker. I watched the fight ringside and the missing clips didn’t change the fact that Jabba could’ve easily been given the fight. He landed more shots and he threw JWP down more than he got thrown. But JWP was the one moving forward for most of the fight and was given the close desicion.
What I think the judges didn’t consider was the 12KG weight difference! Jabba being 69kg and JWP 81kg on the fight day… Jabba’s game plan was to move and counter and he did it really successfully! The judges just didn’t appreciate that tactics but instead interpered it running away? Well, just to say i wasn’t the only one there who would’ve given the desicion to Dzhabar… Anyway, I wish him god speed for his K-1 tournament next month, Kamal el Amrani being his first opponent!!!

  74. nimrod69 on April 23rd, 2008 8:32 pm

    Jabba’s fighting in K-1? cool! ! !

  75. Frank on April 23rd, 2008 9:11 pm

jesus, what happened to the quality? All the others were excellent, but this is pretty terrible. Still, thanks for the upload.

    darknest, thank you very much.

  77. Gusnark on April 23rd, 2008 10:36 pm

Quality is pretty reasonable, it’s long show in the file is less than 700Mb.

darknest, did you think about uploading only the fight between Yod vs JWP? With a better quality of course.

  87. koolkick on April 25th, 2008 8:35 am

Hi Nopstar. Thanks for creating a wonderful site like MMT and for posting contender asia as well as other useful info about muay thai in general. This site is hell a lot of useful to a lot of people like me. Initially when the contender asia started in axn i missed the second episode as i came hme late from office and was really frustrated. Then when i checked this site i was surprised to find the contender asia episodes posted in this site. Then i stopped worrying bcos even if i miss the show on wednesday nights it will be available here. Thanks for the good work and i really appreciate it man.
