This past Saturday the gym I train at FnF held its quarterly smoker. I rolled in to set up our booth a little after 12:00, and was surprised to see the place was already full. I couldn’t figure out what was going on, it was at least an hour and a half before the first match would even get started.

It became fairly apparent that a majority of these people weren’t here to observe, but rather to participate. You can see from the pics how small our gym is… you can imagine my surprise when I heard that there were going to be 53 fights. Not 53 fighters, but 53 fights… a bit excessive if you ask me. They made all the bouts 2 x 2 min. which helped but we were still there until about 7:30.
For me the most interesting fight was the 51st fight. One of the guys I train with is a high school chemistry teacher. It turns out one of his students is also a Nak Muay at another gym. I’m not sure of the details, but basically my friend the teacher was called out by the student.
Dreams do come true…(sort of)
You’ve got to think about this for a second. As far as high school fantasies go, this is the third scenario in every high school boy’s fantasy set list. I think they go something like this:
1.) Having a sordid affair with your hot ass cougar of a teacher. (preferably the librarian)
2.) Scoring the game winning (touch down, basket, home run, goal etc.) then getting laid.
3.) Knocking your Chemistry Teacher TFO, then getting laid.

I noticed the kid brought a fairly large cheering section with him. I saw that his posse came equipped to record and document the whole affair. I’m sure it was going to be the centerpiece of his myspace page for weeks to come.
The beauty of being a 17 year old high school student is that your invincible, shit I thought I was. I’m sure it never ever entered his mind, that his teacher Mr. Aringo might actually be good.
I’m happy to announce that the experience prevailed. Jacob basically showed patience and restraint as he weathered all the bombs that were dropped. When he was satisfied the the young padawan learner had shot his wad, he went to work.
Afterwards, I saw that his student was being a very good sport, and acknowledged that his teacher, in fact “kicked his ass”. I’m sure he would have wanted the outcome to be different, but he should really look at the bright side. How many kids ever got their chance to step into the ring with their teacher? Shit, one fantasy down… 2 more to go.

Great story, Nopstar. Wish I could have been there, but alas I’m in Kauai (where there is virtually NO Muay Thai, by the way).

Yeah, really good story there. Was just at a novice fight afternoon in my own gym on Saturday. Only 7 fights though.

I helped out Mr. Aringo (the teacher) warm up for this friendly “beat down” and he was extremely calm. I would think it would be harder on him as he is the kid’s teacher and doesn’t want to look like an “asshole” to his students and relatives who were there, but at the same time doesn’t want to get tooled.
Did you really say, “shot his wad?”

You have to give the youngster for getting to business in the first round. Just imagine if Aringo was still training as much as he was back abotu 18 months or so. He definitely held back and was hoping to see him use his ‘pimp hand’ on the kid. It didn’t hurt to have all of us getting our “OY!!” on.
Another brilliant story bro..

That’s not a good situation to be in for Mr. Aringo. Whoever set him up set him up for a lose lose situation - if he wins he’s supposed to win with more training experience and being older - if he loses he loses badly to a teenager. I mean who wants to claim “I just beat up a teenager who was my student”?

sorry this is off subject i was wondering about shin guards i’ve seen the ones that pull on like socks and they seem like they would be more comfortable but i’m not sure if they’d be good for muay thai there usually for mma just wondering if anyone could help me out with some info

Personally I don’t think the slip on ones offer enough protection for the wearer or the person getting kicked. I would get a pair of larger hook and loop style guards.

As for the shin guards, I think it depends on what you want. They definitely hurt more for the one on the receiving end- especially if they are thin. That’s pretty much as close as you can get with a real bout- no pads, no headgear and under 16 ounce gloves. For sparring, I would use the hook and loop deals- the leather or fake leather deals are probably more durable.

jacob aringo had eight smokers and two amateur fights, and it was this kids first smoker…all you people are talking shit but i bet all of you suck just as much as your teacher does…i saw the fight and ringo looked like a push over; he should have dominated the fight but didn’t he got beat by a kid who was like 4 inches shorter than him…and i know those leg kicks hurted ringo because he was limping after the fight. all i got to say is students 1, teacher 0..
