Drain Bamage

March 2, 2007 by nopstar

Ever wonder what’s happening when your getting punched or kicked in the head? I’m not about fear mongering but sometimes you just gotta ask yourself what the hell am I doing? When I was boxing a lot, I always made sure to wear my head gear and mouth piece when sparring. Even then I would go home with headaches… my trainer prescribing his “Old School Thai” remedies would say ” Oh no problem… go home take shot!” he would drive his point home by holding an imaginary shot glass to his mouth throwing his head back and giving me a thumbs up. ( it actually works btw).

The Anatomy of a Knock Out

I remember boxing once and took a right cross on the chin and I could feel and see the world go fuzzy just like I was watching a broken television. The last time I was knocked out cold, was high school wrestling practice. I slammed the side of my head against the mat. I swear in the 10-15 seconds I was out I had the most blissful dream that I was lying on the lawn on a warm sunny day. Sounds like bullshit I know, but it was the strangest thing I still remember it vividly to this day. I could hear people calling then I woke to find myself starring at my coach.

KTFO

Here is Kind of freaky clip… How many clips are we going to see where a fighter puts his hands down in the clinch? I can definitively say that when you see that in a video, you know pretty much how it’s going to end.

Wow this guy is having a seizure or he’s having a standing knockout? is that possible? When was the last time your were knocked out? What was your experience like? Were you old cold or did you have a dream? I’d love to hear.

i happen to work next to a cognitive neurologist and his infomal assessment of that was that the guy was having something called a “complex partial seizure.”

    as per emedicine.com:
“Automatisms are quasi-purposeful motor or verbal behaviors that commonly accompany complex partial seizures. The behavior is called quasi-purposeful because it is repeated inappropriately or is inappropriate for the situation. Verbal automatisms range from simple vocalizations, such as moaning, to more complex, comprehensible, stereotyped speech.

Complex motor automatisms are more elaborate, coordinated movements involving bilateral extremities. Examples of complex motor automatisms are cycling movements of the legs and stereotyped swimming movements. De novo automatisms often begin after seizure onset. In other cases, perseverative automatisms occur as repetitions of motor activity that began before the seizure.”

A few of my friends and I used to do some backyard boxing, just all-out without head gear until one of us wanted to stop. A lot of the guys I hit in the head said they experienced split-second blindness or flashes of color vision. Weird stuff.
