Apidej vs. Poodpart
April 29, 2009 by nopstar

I came across this one the other day. Many thanks to GKfromMTA for posting and sharing this. This fight is between Apidej sit Hirun vs. Poodpard Noi. I’m not sure when this fight took place, but commentator said this was a come back fight for Apidej. In this fight Apidej is 34 years old and was retired for 3 years up until this fight. If you’re new to MuayThai be sure to click on the Apidej link… he’s one of our sports legends.
It’s interesting to note towards the end of the first round Apidej digging his heels into Poodpard’s leg. I don’t recall seeing that in many MuayThai fights at all, in fact I think I only see it in MMA.
I find it amazing that in our sport you’re considered ancient at 34. I’d like to think that experience counts for something, but the shear physicality of our sport favors the young. Still I’m sure if I fought Apidej tomorrow, he would still give me a serious ass whooping.
This really was the end of the road for Apidej… it must be hard to let go. You know what you’re supposed to do but your body just wont follow.

I have a total of 8 fights of Apidej’s on video. Only 3-4 of these were in his prime. There is probably 1 of his when he was still up and coming when he fought Dejrit Ittianuchit, Apidej ended up winning the majority of their 11 fights.
When I heard tales of Apidej before I ever got video of him. I pictured this beast that could kick like crazy non-stop for 5 rounds. When I finally got some videos, I was somewhat underwhelmed. Through the years I learned to appreciate it more as I understood what he had talked about through his interviews. He only waited for perfect opportunities kick and that’s how he did damage. He had broken arms and ribs with his kicks and the sounds could be heard in the back of Lumpinee or Rajdamnern as legend had it. My parents didn’t watch muay thai but they knew who Apidej was. He is one of the few boxers that became a household name. I sometimes wonder if old timers embellish on how great the fighters were of the past or if there was something that much different going on in that era.
This should give some good debate to which era and who the greatest of all time is.
Thanks for the post Nop!!
Apideh is a true sportsman of Muay Thai and a gentleman. I had the pleasure to train with him a few years back in Samut Prakan. He knew all the tricks to get away with in the ring too (legal or not), which I found pretty cool. I say he is more a thinking man’s fighter than a bum rush and kill you kind of a guy.
I was lucky enough to train with Apidej during my first trip to Thailand back in October/November. I think he’s in his 70s now, but he’s still fast. He’s also probably one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met. I want to go back to Fairtex for a couple days during my next trip just to train with him again.
