Hola brothers and sisters, yesterday one of our community members sent me a clip of the 50 kicks in :30 challenge. Some of you may remember I posted a clip of the trainers at Tiger Muay Thai participating in the challenge.
MarkF sent this clip… nice vid, nice editing. Anyway I tried the challenge and uhmmm… there were some technical difficulties. I’ll be sure to upload my attempt in the coming days.
Some of the guys in the Gym wanted to get in on the action and here is our first response. This is from Ash “the pocket rocket” Uddin, he fights for KO MuayThai in London. He makes me feel… slow and out of shape!
Anyway as you can see my clip isn’t nearly as nice as MarkF’s so send us your submissions. You can even submit mobile phone quality vid… just upload it and send me the link. I think we’ll do an official competition. The most kicks in :30, you guys will be the judge. No light kicks, solid kicks only. So if your kicks look like you’re doing cardio kickboxing the community will vote. Winner get something… I haven’t figured out what yet, but I promise to mail something out to you.

I think Fairtex actually started this first. It showed (from memory) Kaew peeling off a ton of kicks into the pads. That said I never tried the most kicks in 30 seconds. Could be a useful exercise.

I think the best I have done is 47 but I will give it another shot with video. I will try to get it to you in the next few days.

I think if the pad holders would move a little, these guys would get a few extra kicks in there.
April 23, 2010 at 5:41 am
Wow! With a mouthpiece on too… that should count for a couple extra…
April 23, 2010 at 6:41 am
Honestly….we need to put some ground rules in this….because in the first video the guy’s form was almost flawless with foot pivot and full hip extension which is probably the reason why he couldn’t get as many kicks in as the guy in the second video who’s hip was not turning over and looking by his knee being static…it’s also safe to say that his grounded foot was not pivoting. I usually have my class throw those kind of kicks for conditioning (cardio purpose). So I guess my question is…..Is this just a speed drill or is the form also a criteria?
April 23, 2010 at 6:44 am
btw, I’m in no way trying to belittle Ash….throwing all these kicks wit a mouthpiece on is definitely no small feat so kudos to you.

Agree with spyda completely, those are two completely different kicks. Hopefully mine will look more like number one. I will have video within a couple of days.
As for the pad holder, it helps immensely on this drill if you walk just a bit away from the kick every time rather than standing static. Sort of like walking in a circle.
I think I might get my kru in on this as well as a few other guys from my gym.

both these guys in these videos need to watch footage some Thais and learn something about form and fluidity.
April 24, 2010 at 4:16 am
Could be the padholders too though, they aren’t following the direction of their kicks, move with the kicks!
April 24, 2010 at 5:03 am
What’s wrong with the first guy’s kicks???? And what do u mean “move with the kicks”?
April 27, 2010 at 3:04 am
Yep, 47 tonight. Will post video tomorrow. I think if I worked at it I could hit that 50 mark though.
April 27, 2010 at 3:45 am
nopstar,
im impatiently waiting for your video
April 27, 2010 at 6:11 am
spydaman: move with the kicks means that the pad holder moves backwards or sideways or in a circular direction. The kicker will follow the padholder instead of being stationary. Check out YouTube for some vids. I think there’s one with Yod that displays what I mean.

Ok, here you go for 47:

nice dan.
looks like its better to pace yourself a bit so you dont burn yourself out doing turbo kicks for the first 10 seconds
April 27, 2010 at 11:02 pm
SE – that is correct to an extent – you can hear me groan about 22 seconds into this thing, but I sucked it up to try to get to 50. The pace needs to be pretty quick all the way through. I knew I wasn’t going to make it when she called 15 and I wasn’t halfway there – not too many ways to speed up in the later stages of the challenge.

Nice work Dan!
April 30, 2010 at 4:45 pm
GlegSorChaoPhraya…I know exactly what you’re saying now. I didn’t think we were allowed to do that. That changes everything…..lol. I always found it easier when the pad holder moves along wit ya!
April 30, 2010 at 5:02 pm
Dan from Madison good job! U were so closed…Have u tried it again since? Nice gym btw.
May 1, 2010 at 2:07 pm
Yea I tried again but got up to 48. I could train for this thing and make 50 eventually, but damn it sucks!
May 2, 2010 at 1:15 am
Dan! Well done! You lost very little of your form throughout the 47 kicks! Trust me most guys half your age aren’t even going to come close! I tip my hat to you sir. Very F’ing well done.

One question, am I allowed to post more than 1 entry?
The following is what I just tried for the first time ever, I just got back from my course, so a bit outta shape and experienced some hypotrophy.

May 4, 2010 at 3:56 am
Good work Dan, how old are you?
May 4, 2010 at 12:19 pm
41.5 years young.
May 10, 2010 at 4:47 am
Hey Dan were about the same age, and I m no where near your stamina, excellent job on those kicks!
May 10, 2010 at 12:22 pm
I do a lot of work outside the gym too – running and cycling. The combination of those aerobic workouts with the anaerobic that MT brings is great for the conditioning.

I used to be a compeitive cyclist and triathelete myself. After about 17 years I got burnt out on it.Hopefully I can get my cardio up again but no matter what I do always seem to get gassed.Im starting lap swimming workout s again this week.
