Sweet 16

March 31, 2008 by nopstar · 29 Comments

Screw college basketball apparently K-1 Season is in full swing. We’re just over a week away from the K-1 Max Final 16 Tournament. The Tournament is on the 9th, in Hiroshima. I’ll post what ever I can get a hold of. I can’t seem to keep up with their schedule. It seems like every time I turn around there’s another tournament.

Don’t get me wrong I still prefer K-1 Max to a lot of the other schwag that’s out there. I ganked this directly from the official K-1 site. I didn’t line any of the pics up, simple cut and paste. Looks like they have all the favorites lined up along the side? I’m sure it was intentional… Read more

Thai Ink

I’ve done a few post on Thai Sak Yant in the past. If you’ve never seen a Sak Yant, it’s a traditional/mystical Thai temple tattoo. The symbols and iconography are traditional Thai, Brahmin, and Khmer. Adherents believe the symbols are sacred and imbued with power.

This looks like a clip that didn’t make it into the show. Oh yeah, no little electric needle here. This almost looks as painful as the traditional Maori hand tool tattoos. It’s amazing to see these Nak Muay’s who already have a high threshold for pain, grit and wince in pain. Read more

Very Thai

I know a lot of you guys have spent time in Thailand training and getting up to no good. If you have or your planning on going, this book is a must read. It’s a culmination of all the things you wanted to ask or didn’t know you wanted to ask. For those of you who’ve wondered what was going on with those crappy little pink napkins that are on every table in Thai eateries this book is for you.

I’ve just recently busted this book back out and I can’t believe I haven’t recommended it. Honestly this book is brilliant; I wish I would have thought of it.

Most of my Thai friends own this book. The book is written by Philip Cornwel-Smith. Trust me the irony isn’t lost…it’ taken a non-Thai to explain the essence of Thai-ness to Thai’s. Read more

Forget Cane… meet Phra Ba Neua Chai

March 26, 2008 by nopstar · 10 Comments

I found this article on the only MMA Blog I read… Grapplemonkey.com If you guys haven’t been you should add it on your daily must reads. What’s up Ed where you at?

We’ve all seen Cane “Walk the Earth”, now here’s the real deal. Meet Phra Kru Ba Neua Chai. In Thai “Phra” is Monk and Kru is of course teacher. The full article is available here. It profiles the venerable Phra Kru Ba Neua Chai, who in his earlier life was a fighter.

It’s funny… in America and most of the western world there is this stereotype that Martial Artists (particularly veteran martial artists) are wise sages. I think it’s all the shitty episodes of Kung Fu I had to endure as kid that makes me think that. Most of the Nak Muay’s I’ve meet a far from wise… Read more

Watching this episode makes me miss training big time. I’m so out of Muay Thai shape it’s really quite pathetic. Props to Benjozg for the upload.

I was looking over your comments in the Aukem trailer…nice call with Street Fighter… Read more

Ok Muay Thai friends, hope everyone had a nice holiday weekend. I took full advantage of the long weekend here and spent a little time in Barcelona. If there are any of you from Barcelona you’ve got a pretty badass town.

There’s a new flick for us coming out… I covered this a while back, it stars Somruk, Kaoklai, Apidej Sit-Hirun et al. It looks… well like a Muay Thai action flick. Read more
