2008 Max Finals

April 17th, 2008 · 40 Comments

I guess it’s a bit early to be posting this, but what the hell. I really wanted to post the pic because of Buakaw’s bond villain look. I shouldn’t really talk though, I had to wear one of those for my sisters wedding… It also doesn’t help that he’s rocking the flava flav size Jatukam.

Anyway I hate to say this but the line up is looking tired. Yeah we’ve got 3 fresh faces… but K-1 really needs to step up their regional tournaments. I don’t even know what to make of the brackets… It looks like there is a stong possibility of another Buakaw, Souwer final… anyway it’s way too early to start speculating on this… this isn’t even going to happen until July. Anyway props to chris13 from the k-1fans.com forum for posting the pic and bracket.

Wouldn’t surprise me if it was a masato / souwer final.

Wouldn’t surprise me if it was a buakaw vs souwer Stevelmans in the final.
    Souwer injured?

“Anyway I hate to say this but the line up is looking tired.”
Yeah, but still much better than K-1 GP line-up and is better than last year.

  • 5 Gusnark // Apr 18, 2008 at 4:28 am

sorry… Buakaw vs Stevelmans in the final.

  • 6 spydaman // Apr 18, 2008 at 5:49 am

IM not a big fan or Stevelmans. I think Pique woulda demolished him if he hadn’t gassed….lol. Everyone seems to be on Kyshenko’s jock….I just don’t see wutz so special about him. I kno Sato was pissed as hell when he found out who is was fightin in the first round.
Am I the only one who noticed??…4 fights in the first round, 3 Japanese fighters…..and none of them are fighting each other….lol….How convenient.

  • 7 spydaman // Apr 18, 2008 at 5:52 am

” the flava flav size Jatukam.”….hahahhaahha…..funny NOP.

  • 8 Gusnark // Apr 18, 2008 at 6:49 am

spydaman, and there are two dutch fighters and fighting each other. Coincidence?
    I agree about Kyshenko.

Pique vs Stevelmans… Pique has weak stamina. He always gasses out. Remember him against Buakaw, he was dead on his feet. But he’s a great fighter. He lost fairly to Petrosyan though.

  • 9 spydaman // Apr 18, 2008 at 7:40 am

U’re right….Pique has weak conditioning…..he would be so strong if he took care of that one weakness…I like him. I didn’t see the Petrosyan fight though….maybe I’ll look for it.

I thought Stevelmans was Dutch too but it says (South africa in his profile) so which is it? Lookin at the pic…u realize how short he and Drago are…..lol.

  • 10 spydaman // Apr 18, 2008 at 7:51 am

OH….I like Kido….seems like a cool kid. He might just surprise somebody. I would love to see him fight Souwer in the semi

  • 11 IceMountain Fairtex // Apr 18, 2008 at 8:01 am

Jongsanan said Pique was the hardest fight he ever had. This is beack when they fought for the WBC title.

Wow…how many times has Pique gone for that title now? 0 and 3, 0 and 4?

  • 12 spydaman // Apr 18, 2008 at 8:14 am

Wow….the Wooden Man said dat???…..I thought he would say his famous battles wit Sakmongkol were the hardest.

  • 13 IceMountain Fairtex // Apr 18, 2008 at 8:18 am

I think it’s because he’s so big and Num was at the end of his career. At the same time he also said that since Mark Mian worked with him, he was the strongest he ever felt at the same time.

Maybe it’s because both fighters lead with their heads and don’t like to fight on the backfoot.

  • 14 IceMountain Fairtex // Apr 18, 2008 at 8:21 am

    spydaman:

I think when you fight someone 8 times, they all tend to blend together. Those fights were also in thailand against another thai, so he was in his element.

  • 15 yknocka // Apr 18, 2008 at 9:11 am

I’m rooting for Kido to make some noise this Max.

  • 16 tong po // Apr 18, 2008 at 9:28 am

Num (Jongsanan) laid Pique out pretty good. I was surprised how long Pique lasted with Buakaw. Just shows how good Jongsanan was.

The only thing that looks a little interesting is Masato/Drago- Masato via KO.

  • 17 Gusnark // Apr 18, 2008 at 9:31 am

    spydaman… Pique vs Petrosyan:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYcA8DkIT1Y

Stevelmans’s profile says South Africa, but is training in Vos Gym (Hoost).

  • 18 spydaman // Apr 18, 2008 at 9:41 am

    IceMountain Fairtex …u’re right…makes sense.
    Yknocka….me too
TOng Po….Drago doesn’t stand a chance…..I think that might actually be the least interesting fight of the bunch (To me)…..lol.

Gusnark….thanx for the info and thanx for the link…If another Thai was in the world max…they’d probably put him against Buakaw too….just to make sure they don’t reach the final together (contender anyone??)

  • 19 tong po // Apr 18, 2008 at 10:15 am

Spydaman, you may be right, but Drago’s aggressive style MIGHT pose problems early on for Masato…

  • 20 tong po // Apr 18, 2008 at 10:26 am

I still would like to see JWP in Max.

  • 21 Singro // Apr 18, 2008 at 11:30 am

I think JWP is getting too old to be interested. But I agree, would love tio see him stirr up shit.
If he could take the title as well (don’t think it’s likely though) I’d love it. He needs that last little cherry on the top to make himself a true legend.

  • 22 Gusnark // Apr 18, 2008 at 12:13 pm

    Totally agree with Singro.

Btw, since there will be clash of different styles, check out this clip. It’s MT vs TKD. I know it silly to compare styles, but I find this clip amusing and funny. You probably saw this, anyways, for those who didn’t:

  • 23 IceMountain Fairtex // Apr 18, 2008 at 4:39 pm

I think Masato x DRAGO will one sided with DRAGO clamming up the same way he did against BPP.

I’m looking forward to Artur x Kido. This will be a test to Kido’s conditioning IMO.

  • 24 Gio // Apr 19, 2008 at 1:43 am

haha that’s a classic clip of TKD vs. Muay Thai. Speaking of Giorgio Petrosyan, I wonder why he hasn’t gotten more attention from places like K-1 (also in general). He’s one of the only fighters in the west that really challenged BPP ( he drew with him I think) generally he’s Italy’s best hope for MT!

    Forza Italia!

  • 25 ShadyEskimo // Apr 19, 2008 at 5:19 am

Masato vs Drago= Exciting to see how the fight develops, maybe Drago will get his ass whiped BIG Time or Not. But I wouldnt say Drago has NO chance.
Athur vs Kido= Wow cant wait, I never like to predict fights cause of the crazy things that Can happen.
BPP vs Sato= what didnt they just fight, and yes No Japanese fighting eachother, Lame Stuff.
Souvwer Fight, Cant wait to see what all the Fuss is about with Stevelmanns, maybe he will make an upset instead of Kido. But Kido looks capable of dangerous stuff. THANK GOD FOR K1 MAX. And Eurosport for airing it in Denmark.

  • 26 Olivia // Apr 19, 2008 at 6:24 am

I think Baukaw looks hot in anything…even if it is a bit pimped out.

I dont follow the K1 series that much…so whats this Stevelmans like? Im from S.Africa and never seen him?

  • 27 Gusnark // Apr 19, 2008 at 6:58 am

Olivia check Stevelmans’s fights on http://www.dailymotion.com/us

Kiddo is OK, has some nice moves, but he’s over-rated like Sawayashiki was. Kiddo barely “beat” Ologun. On the other hand, Ologun had no chance against BPP, therefore Kiddo has probably no chance against all the top of top fighters.

  • 28 burnt1tofu // Apr 19, 2008 at 7:43 am

true that, they need some new stars in K-1 max.

  • 29 IceMountain Fairtex // Apr 19, 2008 at 9:57 am

Kido is very good at the little he knows about muay thai. Middle kick, right knee (to face?), and stiff jab cross. It’s good to be simple, look at Ignashov.

He only had a hard time with Ologun because he’s a natural athletic and talented. BPP didn’t come close to KOing him. Ologun has HORRIBLE defense though, his presence in the ring keeps people from attacking him.

    Artur = 3,0 dec

  • 30 greghow // Apr 20, 2008 at 12:31 am

Good to see Buakaw rematching Sato. This time he really has to KO Sato or the judges will force a 4th round (again) even if Buakaw wins the first 3. That just isn’t the ideal way for him to start a night with 3 fights.

JWP fought in Max before and he was even featured in a National Geographic special on K-1/Muay Thai in 2004 or 2005 (?). I wonder if he’s still thinking of fighting in K-1.

  • 31 JoeFromSoCal // Apr 20, 2008 at 12:52 am

What happened to Souwers left hand? It’s all bandaged up.

  • 32 Gusnark // Apr 20, 2008 at 2:33 am

    gregHow, it was in 2005.
There’s also a documentary on you tube, but only in German version:
    http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=k-1+National+Geographic&search_type=
Some time ago it was also in English version.

JWP was fighting 2 times in K-1 Max Final. Both times he lost in the 1st fight, maybe that was spent opportunity for him and K-1 administration found him not so important to extend their contract.
Maybe JWP can lighten the situation.

  • 33 spydaman // Apr 20, 2008 at 7:24 am

JWP fought twice in the K1 max FINAL????…where was I when that happened??….lol.
    Let’s see:
    2002 final Kraus vs Kaolan
    2003 final Krauss vs Masato
    2004 final Masato vs Buakaw
    2005 final Buakaw vs Souwer
    2006 final Buakaw vs Souwer
    2007 final Masato vs Souwer

I re-read ur statement again just to make….u probably meant “K-1 Max” and not “K-1 max final”.
Either way…I figured I’d give a history lesson to people who don’t kno how long K1 World Max has been around.

Also….guys…do some research on Kaolan….dude was a very good fighter….too bad the first world max happened towards the decline in his career….but I do also believe that if Kaolan had never left WM…we would probably would have never heard of Buakaw.

2 Thais + World Max = NO NO NO!

  • 34 Gusnark // Apr 20, 2008 at 8:10 am

I meant the final 8. Both times he lost in the first fight.

  • 35 spydaman // Apr 20, 2008 at 8:12 am

    Ure right!

  • 36 Gusnark // Apr 20, 2008 at 12:04 pm

    Sorry for being misleading.
Did any of you guys see this great wai khru?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acsCSSNieV8
One of the best I’ve ever seen.

  • 37 spydaman // Apr 20, 2008 at 12:09 pm

I read ur comment and thought to myself….”the best Wai Khru I had ever seen was perform by Numsaknoi” Then I clicked on the link…..lmao….and Bang!!!…it was Numsaknoi…..lol.

  • 38 colargol // Apr 21, 2008 at 10:47 am

I’m going to go against the grain here and say that Drago is a real threat to Masato. He seems a little bit mechanical, easier to read than the top guys and he isn’t blindingly fast but he is rock-hard, has good defense and throws everything with power. Let’s not forget his very good win vs Kraus in 2006..

Just because Buakaw handled him easily doesn’t mean Masato will do the same. They have a very different toolset. And I think it’s unlikely that he will have stage-fright like against Buakaw.

  • 39 IceMountain Fairtex // Apr 21, 2008 at 12:33 pm

I see where you’re coming from on this but I don’t think his strength and determination will be enough to convincingly beat Masato.

I forget his name, but the German MMA guy that KO’ed a few people then fought Masato and gave up; I think we’ll see something similar with Masato not giving into DRAGO’s pressure. I think he’ll get stuffed by Masato and walk right into a right cross that puts him down.

  • 40 colargol // Apr 21, 2008 at 2:00 pm

It’s possible that Masato dissects him the way Chahbari did, for example. I just think Drago is legitimate top dutch fighter and could pose some problems. Not saying he will definitely win but I give him better than the 5% chance everyone else seems to.
He has been refining his game in the past two years and this combined with his usual ‘barrage of pain’ tatics should make for an interesting fight. I am definitely looking forward to it more than Masato vs Kohi 2 :)

PS: I think the guy you’re thinking of is Lithuanian fighter Remigijus Morkevicius? he was a pressure fighter allright but not of the same pedigree as Drago :)
