    not cool

  • 3 Frank // Oct 2, 2008 at 2:13 am

masato has a pretty damn solid chin. Questionable extra round imo, but I’m out of touch with k-1 scoring nowadays.

  • 4 Greg W // Oct 2, 2008 at 3:27 am

I’m a Masato fan but he lost that fight fair and square. Whoever his boxing trainer is, should be fired ASAP.

  • 5 jake // Oct 2, 2008 at 3:27 am

    ugh.

  • 6 greghow // Oct 2, 2008 at 3:43 am

This really isn’t surprising at all. Masato is top class, and he recovered well in both his fights after the knock downs, but it is really clear that if he doesn’t suffer a one-sided beat down, the judges will always declare him the winner.

It isn’t too controversial though because he fought a good fight. In fact, I think all four fighters made a pretty good case for each of themselves. Every fight could have gone either way…

  • 7 sudan // Oct 2, 2008 at 5:11 am

Great fight! Masato’s hand speed is outrageous plus he has an iron chin. Arthur should have kicked more. Masato deserves the win cause he wanted it more.

  • 8 tong po // Oct 2, 2008 at 5:53 am

Again, why didn’t Kyshenko kick more. We could see that Masato’s leg was hurt. A lot of punching trading going on these days in Max. Masato had the best jab of the night. I think it pretty damn close- but I had Kyshenko winning.

  • 9 fight geek // Oct 2, 2008 at 6:03 am

I can understand those who think Kyoshenko should’ve won in three, but I thought going to the extra round was fair enough . . . and Masato definitely won that!

Anyways, I’m pretty biased on this one. I thought both fighters did a great job, but I’m happy that Masato is Champ again :)

  • 10 EC // Oct 2, 2008 at 6:18 am

    @ sudan and tong po

It seemed like Kyshenko’s left leg was injured somehow. He kicked with his left way more than his right during his match with Souwer, but he used the right almost exclusively w/ Masato. Am I off on this?

  • 11 nopstar // Oct 2, 2008 at 7:38 am

all the rule changes… this was practically handed to him on a plate. I’m glad he won, hopefully he’ll retire and K1 can get out of the Masato business.

Kyshenko needs to get with Souwers conditioning coach. It’s clear Kyshenko has the skills to hang with the big boys. His conditioning however, needs some attention. He gassed with Andy and He gassed here.

As part of the new rules, I understood that they were implementing open scoring. After each round they announce the judges score… I wasn’t able to catch the score after the rounds… anybody catch them?

I’m still slightly shocked it went into an extra round…

ok know for my conspiracy analysis…I think Kyshenko did well against Andy… but I think K1 preferred to have Kyshenko in the finals, it’s his first finals and has never fought in the finals. I think with Souwers conditioning, experience, and skill he would have beat Masato, hand down.

Did Kyshenko do enough to get past Souwer? I think so, just barely… I think K1 was relieved when Souwer was unable to get a Knockdown on Kyshenko… it made their decision more plausible. I would even go so far as to say, even if Souwer got a knock down on Kyshenko they would have still given it to Kyshenko.

    Ok enough dribble from me.

    sudan-
“Masato deserves the win cause he wanted it more.”
It’s ok to be Masato fan, but your statement isn’t right on spot. There are the RULES and points that clarify the winner.

    Nopstar-
“all the rule changes… this was practically handed to him on a plate. I’m glad he won, hopefully he’ll retire and K1 can get out of the Masato business.”

    Exactly!
The trophy is handed to him, even he didn’t fully deserve it. Kyshenko really matured and should won. Masato was more convincing in the 4th, but that round shouldn’t occurred. Kinda reminds me of 2004 final.
Masato is a great fighter and his fights are great to watch, but seeing him retire bring some benefits. I’m fed up with all the weird judging and rule changes. Heh, I wonder when Masato retires, maybe more knees per clinch will be allowed again. You never know, since Sato will be the only top Japanese fighter and is MT practicioner. Heh

  • 13 Stack // Oct 2, 2008 at 8:34 am

Sato should have won that. He really did get jobbed. Sato dropped Masato cleanly and had it been anyone else it’d be a done deal. But it wasn’t anyone. It was Masato.

Ah well that’s K-1 for you. I pretty much stack K-1 Max in the exact same category as K-1; entertainment may be a step ahead of WWE and that’s it.

  • 14 greghow // Oct 2, 2008 at 9:11 am

Is K-1 scored with the 10-9 system? If so, the Masato-Sato match was 28-28 after 3 rounds, and Masato took the extra round. I don’t see much controversy there. I think Kyshenko deserved to win after 3 rounds though, but apparently he didn’t do enough to overcome Masato’s K-1 Preferred Customer Privileges.

It really must have been a F*@&#^n hard night for Masato and Kyshenko with each of their fights going to the extra round. Before going into the final, Kyshenko probably suffered more punishment than Masato had against Sato. That sucks for him. But hey, how many people in the world can say they beat Andy Souwer? He’s probably gonna get a lot more much-deserved attention now.

By the way, what were the rule changes for this tournament? The only one I’m aware of is that Souwer wasn’t allowed to wear his tights =)

  • 15 Stack // Oct 2, 2008 at 9:59 am

K-1 is scored on a however they fell like scoring it must system.

  • 16 Nathan Wade Willet // Oct 2, 2008 at 10:20 am

Masato has been setup pretty well to win his second and last final this year.

He’s beaten Artur before. BPP is out. Souwer was a threat so he was taken out before he had a chance to beat Masato again.

I still want Masato to win no matter what politics are involved.

  • 17 ShadyEskimo // Oct 2, 2008 at 10:29 am

Masato shouldnt have made it past Sato, Sato was the deserved Finalist. I REALLY HOPE Nop is correct, and Masato will retire, so we can end this shit!! And why Masato?? Yosihiro Sato could have made Japan proud against either Souwer or Kysch!!!
Dont the Japanese GET that the rest of the world think they are Honourless and Cheating when they do THIS??

  • 18 ShadyEskimo // Oct 2, 2008 at 10:30 am

    Samurai Spirit MY ASS!!

  • 19 Frank // Oct 2, 2008 at 1:17 pm

K-1 is just a joke to me now. At least these fights were decent, it’s just the organization is a farce with their scoring.
If you were in Masato’s shoes, how would you feel after watching your fights on replay? I’d be ashamed.

  • 20 sudan // Oct 2, 2008 at 2:18 pm

Good points are being made by every body. I personally love Buakow, but although Masato got knocked down by Sato, he was winning that fight with his aggression and jab. I think that Arthur almost pulled it of but he gassed, he stopped kicking and Masato was all over him. The silver wolf is a smart fighter and there is no doubt that K1 pulled some strings for their favorite son. Now he can retire on top. BTW the clinch and especially the throws should count for something.

  • 21 Gusnark aka Sandjora // Oct 2, 2008 at 4:03 pm

    Frank-
    very nicely put.

Well, I hope that Masato retires. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a great fighter, but we’re fed up with K-1 bullshit.

  • 22 colargol // Oct 2, 2008 at 10:49 pm

Despite me being a big Sato fan, I have to admit the extra round was fair and the final decision correct. Well done both guys.
Regarding Artur vs Andy: I think it was close but Artur was the winner after 3. The extra round was just another Masato favor (like frivolous extra round between Zambo and Kyshenko last year). Round 4 was close again but this time I think Souwer won.
And the final.. Well, it was 100% robbery. Masato fans can sugar coat it all they want, saying he fought like a warrior, was more ‘busy’, etc but there is nothing uncertain about it: Artur was better over 3 and his belt was stolen from him.

  • 23 czh25 // Oct 3, 2008 at 10:06 am

I am not a fan of Sato at all..I think he’s slow(becoz he’s tall)… but he got lucky recently, din he?..the long knee followed by a hook which got buakaw K.O. but I am definitely a fan of Masato!

However, I still don’t understand why Masato won that match against Sato? din the judges awarded round 1 to sato? then in 2nd round, masato got a knocked down..(10-8 in the scoring at least?) how did it manage to go to the extra round???

  • 24 Gusnark aka Sandjora // Oct 3, 2008 at 2:22 pm

Judging in the Kyshenko vs Masato fight:

    Round1:
“It might have lit a fire under Kyshenko when one judge scored the first round a draw and the other two gave it to Masato by a point.”

    Round2:
“Still, the down had put Kyshenko up on one card going into the third.”

    Round3:
“After three rounds, one card had it for Masato while the others added up even, and so a tiebreaker was prescribed.”

    Round4:
“Although Kyshenko connected with a hard upper, his flagging guard left him vulnerable and he received more than he gave, and Masato finished the round in control.”

And the “excuse” for the robbery :)
“A very good performance by the young Kyshenko, but a better one from the experienced Masato, whose stamina, smarts and versatility erased the second-round down and earned him a unanimous decision and the World Max Belt.”

Isnt that FEG that provide the Afterfights Report, They can write what they Want! I remember reading about the Sato vs Buakaw fight and It didnt even Mention the Knee strike, so Bullocks to that Source!!

  • 26 stinolatino // Oct 3, 2008 at 4:11 pm

Not a great max to me.. I enjoyed this fight the most of all the fights..

  • 27 JM // Oct 4, 2008 at 1:27 am

I think its unfair to want Masato to retire just because hes playing within a system that favours him. He is a top tier, and exciting fighter. It is true though, that K-1 needs to pull its head out of its ass, in regards to judging etc, if it is to be considered an actual sporting organization.

  • 28 sudan // Oct 4, 2008 at 2:07 am

I think that silver wolf has another year, perhaps 2 left in him. It’s been rumored that he might retire. I personally feel that he’s a great kickboxer and very good for the sport. Does any body know if he’s retiring or not?

  • 29 Gusnark aka Sandjora // Oct 4, 2008 at 9:40 am

    ShadyEskimo-
you’re right, Buakaw vs Sato report was incorrect. That’s my point exactly, such a report on official K-1 page.

    sudan-
Silver wolf said it that himself many times. I agree that he’s in top form. If he still fights next year, K-1 will give him another trophy if he doesn’t get KOed I guess.

  • 30 ShadyEskimo // Oct 4, 2008 at 9:23 pm

    JM
I think I forgot to Say I think Masato is an Awesome fighter, and I know he doesnt have anything to do with all the Controversy!! Maybe the FEG got their Masato Fever Chilled for Next year, and will judge fairly just to please us Fans(Source of Income)And Masato can win the Belt Fairly and THEN RETIRE on The top!!

  • 31 Josh // Oct 17, 2008 at 1:17 am

Great fight, but I think Kyshenko edged it out…especially after the knockdown. In a 3 round fight, if you are knocked down you basically have to destroy your opponent to win the decision. Masato, although he was tough and fought great did not destroy Kyshenko after the knockdown. Am I right or wrong?
