2008 K-1 Max Final 8 – Souwer vs. Stevelmans

July 7, 2008 by nopstar

Big up to Gusnark for tracking these down…

Souwer vs. Stevelmans

You can watch the youtube version here.  WTF?  What was that all about?

Firstly hats off to Stevelman… I need to find some more of this guys fights.  Explosive, he’s like a little pitbull…  I’ve never seen Souwer teep in my life!  Am I making that up?  Have any of you guys seen him do that?  He had to keep Stevelman off him!

I’m sorry that should have gone an extra round.  I give the first round to Stevelman, easily.   The second round was tougher to call but I think it was essentially even.  I need to go back and watch this.  This has been the underdogs MAX…   I’m not really sure what that’s all about, do you guys think the favorites thought this was going to be a cake walk?  All of the challengers came out ready to bring it to them.

I’d like to see Stevelmans and Zambo…  I’m picking Stevelmans.

This could easily went to extra round.
For me, Stevelmans was even better. We was more active, more dominant… ok, he absorbed two good shots and that was the deciding factor? Oh my… to me very even fight.

Agreed Gusnark; I actually though Stevelmans won that fight outright

On a side note I can see the refs are still allowing Andy his Clinch as long as you please perk, One wrap up and Buakaw gets the finger warning from the ref.

    Stevelmans is the shit..
I think he has one of the best chins of all those guys out there..
Very active, nice combo’s, he deserved to win..

As for souwer, I like him and he’s a great fighter, but he shouldn’t have won that fight..

But hey once again Stevelmans has proven his doubters the finger, a lot of people seemed to think he would get his head knocked/kicked off…

I would agree that this was a pretty even fight.

I wonder why Souwer wears those pants.

    Is it:

1: to look more like Johnny Cage, a la Mortal Kombat

2: to hide his ugly leg tattoos, especially the “I love the Thompson Twins”

3: to draw more attention to his tramp stamp

hehe you’re reasons may be true too matt…:p

But I think he said it was too honour his shootboxing club or something, his club/sport that made him great..

  6. natemuaythaimaster on July 7th, 2008 9:10 pm

oh shit your right he does have a tramp stamp

I don’t think Stevelmans should of won it outright, Souwer landed some great shots, but it should of definitely gone an extra round…

  9. stinolatino on July 8th, 2008 12:34 am

Souwer certainly didn’t think it was going to be a cake walk..
He was at the dutch K-1 max tournament and presented Stevelmans the cup afterwards:)

I didn’t knew Stevelmans till then, and like many other guys I thought Lima(the favorite) would kill him, boy was I wrong! After the first punches to Lima’s head I knew this guy was for real.. Never seen Lima get outboxed, let alone that badly..

Stevelmans looks to be a new force in Max! Very aggressive and good combos. New talent seem to be getting better.

  11. greghow on July 8th, 2008 6:01 am

Good job! He really made Souwer his bitch in the beginning of the fight…

  12. Gusnark on July 8th, 2008 6:39 am

“He really made Souwer his bitch in the beginning of the fight” LMAO. Stevelmans definitely is the man.

Souwer had some impressive knees. Very impressive knees. But I still feel like Stevelmans did better overall, or at least, yeah, close enough for an extra round like you guys say.

Just watched Diender vs Holkzen, a fight that happened 2 days ago, Awesome fight I think it should be posted on this site too –> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RCxfqAd0ww

Yeah, if I was a judge I wouldn’t have a problem giving Stevelmans the fight. I predicted this was going to happen though and after the Amara and Zambidis fights (2006 and 2008 respectively) I couldn’t imagine Stevelmans getting a decision.

Souwer’s style is perfect for MAX and he does just enought to make you take notice and when he does explode it’s usually a nice combination that overshadows anything his opponent does.

This is realli a close fight! i am impressed by this Steve guy.
Guess Souwer won due to his reputation.

    Awesome match.

  18. spydaman on July 9th, 2008 6:44 am

    Stinolatino….thanx for the link….great fight!

  19. Gusnark on July 9th, 2008 7:01 am

“Guess Souwer won due to his reputation.”
Most likely, watched the fight again, for me Stevelmans was better.

  20. rick roufous on July 11th, 2008 8:27 pm

Souwer win that hands down. Souwer was never hurt or in trouble. He hurt Stevelmans many times. I think many of you are just biased becuase this guy is very talented and is kicking major ass currently.

  21. spydaman on July 11th, 2008 9:28 pm

Rick, ” I think many of you are just biased becuase this guy is very talented and is kicking major ass currently.”…I don’t understand the logic behind that statement. Unless the people u are speakin’ of are Stevelmans fans then I don’t understand how they can be biased.
Souwer has been kickin’ ass since I’ve heard of him so what do u mean by “currently”?
Also who’s “major” ass are we talkin about…..yes he’s kicked ass…..but I don’t think he’s kicked anybody ass who is of a great threat.
so “currently”….(I presume you mean in ’08) he’s fought:
    - Zambidis, who’s only notable win since 2003 was pulling a decision over Gago Drago last year (extra round).

    - Yod lost by decision (questionable)

NOW Let’s entertain this further and go wit 2007 (Just for kicks!!)

    - Nieky Holzken was a decision

    - Andy Ologun is a “can” or “filler”

    - Masato was already half dead when Souwer fought him in the finals last year.

    - Kraus was a decision

    - Drago is not MAJOR

    - Ole is at the end of his rope.

However “This is guy very talented”…..I do agree with that part.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=8OSC3U84 Here is a Shunsuke Video from K-1fans. Really proffesionally done and Andy Souwers OWN webpage used the Video.

i tend to agree w/ rick. stevelmans maybe won round 2. I rewatched the fight given these comments and i really think that while stevelmans looked good, souwer had ridiculous defense and was more effective. watch round one again. souwer lands more leg kicks. stevelmans is throwing nice fast combos but almost EVERY punch is blocked (i think he lands one clean uppercut). souwer is a master at defense and he’s very economical. he lets you tire yourself out while throwing precision low kicks at you then he comes on strong at the end of rounds. k-1 judges love the low kick. he hurt stevelmans at the end of the first and again with a beautiful right counter 1 minute into the 3rd round. being so active made this a closer fight for stevelmans but he never really landed a shot that really hurt souwer.

i do understand why a lot of fans don’t like souwer. he’s kinda boring. but he’s smart, hard to hit, and effective with an economy of attacks.

  24. ShadyEskimo on July 19th, 2008 9:41 pm

    Cincinnatus
Nice observations, and Yes he is Effing Good, and Hard. But a little dull on the eye. Totally agree.

  25. Singro on July 23rd, 2008 6:42 pm

Stevelmans did a pretty good fight here, much better than I thought he would. He caught Souwers legs a lot and got him off balance, nice combos as well. But I have to agree with the above statements that Souwer won this one. As to how good he really is.. We’ll see later this year.
