Muay Thai Gear Review: Combat Sports Thai Pads
February 27, 2007 by nopstar · 6 Comments
Our gym just got a few pair of the “Combat Sports International” Thai pads. My initial impression of them was that these feel sort of cheap. They’re Velcro as well, which in my opinion is a fairly big minus. If you come to our gym, all the Thai Pads, with Velcro are pretty much shot; the Velcro seems to have a life of only Read more
Muay Thai Around the World
February 26, 2007 by nopstar · 15 Comments
Where you at people? I was looking at my traffic last night, and I was curious about where most of you are from? I found some surprises but I feel it’s a fairly representative picture of the state of Muay Thai around the world.
Granted this blog is only really accessible to English readers, so the data is skewed in that sense. However, I’m finding that the data supports my ideas of where Muay Thai is popular around the world. If you look at the world map, you’ll see the three areas where I’m getting zero traffic from are Greenland, Russia and Africa.
I’m fairly certain I’m wrong about Russia though, I know they’ve got some fighters. Greenland and Africa though don’t seem to me like they would be much of a Muay Thai scene there.
Looking at the map of the US, everything sort of looks about right. I didn’t imagine Muay Thai being too popular in Montana. As far as the most popular in the States it’s California especially SF, Oakland and LA, and the Eastern Corridor NJ, NYC and Pa.
As for internationally… I think once again my data is skewed “English” According to my reporting most of my International traffic comes from Sweden! I know the Swedes have Jorgen Kruth but is Muay Thai really that popular there? Or does a higher portion of their population speak English? Then the list goes something like this:
- Sweden?
- Canada
- UK
- Thailand
- Australia
- Germany
- Japan
- Brazil
- France
- Netherlands
- Spain
Where are you from and where do you train? I would love to hear.
Ram Muay To Ram or Not to Ram?
February 23, 2007 by nopstar · 15 Comments
The other day I overheard some people at my gym talking about the Ram Muay. Somebody asked why one of our fighters doesn’t perform the Ram Muay before his matches. The short answer that was given was it’s a Buddhist thing and he isn’t Buddhist.
I just want to come out and say that the Ram Muay isn’t Buddhist. This just isn’t true. (I’ll explain this later) Personally it bothers me when Muay Thai students don’t perform the Ram Muay. Go on any of the message boards and you’ll see comments like “Only Fan Boys do the Ram Muay” or “I wouldn’t waste your time with it”. If that’s your rational for not doing the Ram Muay then go to a kickboxing gym.
I’m not here to bring up the Sport vs. Martial Art debate; you guys can go to the forums to do that. Personally I think the Ram Muay helps strengthen the bond between Muay Thai and Read more

This is our second installment of Insane Muay Boran techniques. This new technique is call Ruesee Hern (The Flying Ascetic) Damn, talk about all or nothing… Once again, I’m not calling BS, on this because I’m sure at one point in time someone, somewhere pulled this off. Could you imagine if you pulled this off, only to break your ribs on the curb?
2007 K-1 KHAN

Did any of you catch K-1 Max Korea event the other day? Of course you didn’t, we live in the US and the only thing we get is the IFL and the Chuck Norris’s booty wearing crap.
I’m posting two vids, you can find the rest of the action here. The First fight is the extra round between Kaoklai and Korean hopeful Park Yong Soo. Honestly your not missing a whole lot by just catching this last round.
Soo’s about 6′7″ and a member of the Korean National Team. Soo has never one a title and has clearly spent most of his time in the point sparring world. He’s had a few wins over the months but they were against crap opponents.
Kaoklai vs. Park
This match was awful. I’m ashamed to admit it but when I was watching this, I was Read more
